I name all my incursus either Gawain or Sir Gawain or some variation thereof (The Green Sash for my dual-repper version) due to the giant lance and the green/blue color of the ship.
Usually it's based on the look of the ship, though sometimes I'll throw in something based on its function (e.g. Junkyard is my salvager ship, doesn't matter what ship it is) |

depending who are the enemy i am fighting. if its some alliance/corp i hate, my ships will be named mocking them or otherwise as offensive as possible, if im fighting just some random dudes my ships will be most likely named something from space or mythology. |

I try to choose somehow "poetic" sounding names for my ships. I probably end up naming them in silly ways, but well, hehe. I'm also a sucker for alliterations.
Examples of shipnames:
Patient Pursuer (an Incursus) Sorrowful Sawyer (a Catalyst) Demure Doll (a Vexor) |

Hey :D
While in RvB, my piles of Incursii were named after knights of the round table, that hull is certainly not a fish of any sorts, but a lance-bearer!
I also forgot that I used to name blaster boats according to ancient Maori gods, but the only one I have left atm is a Mega named Ruaumoko- the source of earthquakes. Gallente - the choice of the interstellar gentleman |

Please tell me that I'm not the only person in EVE with a Drake called 'Francis'? (although that may resonate only with Brits)
I also use names based upon Iain M Banks' culture ship names such as 'Sleeper Service', 'Lapsed Pacifist' and of course 'Clear Air Turbulence'...but I do have a BC called Thunderer, as the Royal Navy had a BC of that name at Jutland, and who wouldn't want to be captain of a warship called Thunderer?
Oh, and my Orca is called "The Dirty Projector", as a band of that name released a record called 'Bitte Orca' |

All of mine are named from the 2nd Edition AD&D Monster Manuals...cuz I'm just that much of a geek. They corresponde either to the ship's function or it's size; or both.
And if I lose one, I get another and name it the same thing only with a II, III, IV, V, etc. after it (to signify that I suck and lost that many ships before it).
My frigates are all called things like "Goblin" or "Kobold" (but the Firetail got the name of "Wisp")
My haulers and barges have names like "Bullette" or "Osyluth".
And my combat ships are undead names like "Wraith" or "Demi Lich". My typhoons carry the name of "Arch Lich"...sadly I'm up to the suffix of "III"...
Named my new Noctis "Harpy". Dunno why... |

one of my favorite ships is the jaguar and I actually held a contest for people to give it a name.
eventually it was named: Tezcatlipoca, and I know of at least 3 ways in which it matches not only the ship and its origin but also myself. |

I have three types of name: Standard, T2, and Faction names, which are then split down by hull type and all are based on a religious context (being Amarrian this kinda suits)
e.g. for a ship based on the Apoc hull:
Standard: TES Divinity's Edge T2: TES Dei gratia Faction: TES Angel of Wrath.
I also had a naming convention based on emotive feeling: e.g. Rapturous Outcome, Indomitable Hatred..

Haha nice thread. I usually throw mythological decorum out the window and combine words from different culture's:
My first carrier was named 'Ahes Iara', where 'Ahes' was a magician from Breton, and 'Iara' was known as a Brazilian water queen.

I normally use themes from venereal deseases and their sympthoms, or just weird/repulsive stuff. Like:
Gonorrhea burn > Hurricane Syphilitic rash > Navy Comet Smegma sherbet > Brutix Coj+¦n derecho (Spanish for "right testicle") > Ishkur The teabagger > Hound
I do this because whenever I choose serious or good sounding names for my ships, they are invariably destroyed immediately.
I hadn't lost a ship since January 2011, and the other day I thought I loved the way my Naga look and that it deserved a beautiful name.
15 minutes later it got gangbanged by a 26-man fleet.
Never again. It's smegma, phlegm and STDs all the way for my ships. |
