Edited by: Vanessa Angelus on 11/11/2010 11:27:56 Hi!
I'm now on a mission to take out some of these macro Magnates. My first attempt (in a punisher lol) got me blown up by the sentries in about 2 seconds flat! So I need some advice on how best to kill these guys. How much DPS do 2 sentries put out, and how best to tank it?
I had an idea of chaining a couple of logistics spaced further out i.e:
me<-----logi<-----logi
not sure if this is viable, and is it likely to get the logi cruisers popped as well? What about sec status for the chars involved? Would I get the hit or would the other two get a sec hit as well for assisting me?
Advice would be most welcome as this is my first time dipping my toes into something that isn't PVE!
Thankyou!
edit: Forgot to add that this is in a 0.4 system
Mods: I'm not sure if this should be here or in Ships & Modules, and didn't want to crosspost. Please move or leave here as you see fit!

you can tank the gate guns in a battle cruiser or battleship for a bit. Armor tanking would prob be best you'd need to fit some sensor boosters to be able to lock the frigs in time. But an active tanked battlecruiser or battleship would do just fine. Sig removed, inappropriate content. If you would like further details please mail [email protected] - Saint |

Tanking sentries is rather a simple thing, especially if your target is a frigate, you can pull it off in most cruisers and higher.
Regarding your specific targets there are a few variables to consider;
Do they autopilot? If yes then scan res is less of an issue as you will have 15km or so to lock and pop them.
What races are you specced? to what degree?
Beyond the macro Magnates, how much other traffic is there? What is the likelyhood that you will get pinned on the gate by other people in combat ships? This will impact what you should use.
To answer your question regarding logistics - seems like a waste IMO. Regarding the sec status; When your tackler gains GCC they will take a sec hit, if you then get repped by a logistic ship, that logistic ship will gain GCC and also take a sec hit, if the 2nd logistic reps the first logistic WHILE the first logistic has GCC it will also gain GCC and take a sec hit.

Edited by: Darius III on 11/11/2010 11:55:07 Don't "Tank" them at all. Rather kill them in one shot with a thrasher: 7 arty, 2 damage mods and a missile launcher. Have your alt spot them ahead of time 1 jump out, when they approach the outgate, after they jump/warp and land again, pfft 1 shot Thrasher to the ****pit.
Edit: The deleted word means "The section of aircraft/spacecraft that the pilot sits in" Wtf word filter? This is a spaceship game and you cant use the word ****pit? Really? ****pit

Thanks for the replies! Food for thought.
The macro runners are using WTZ so the only time I can catch them is when they jump into system, so I have a couple of seconds to lock and scramble them before they warp off - hence I used a fast locking frig. Still working out options and trying to adapt my tactics.

A Hac will do the job nicely. I used to pop any macros I would see while flying around in a vaga.

A plated cruiser will have enough time to kill the frig and get out. Gate guns deal about 200-300dps and can't be speed-tanked. Battlecruiser can be fit for effective combat on gates, but for doing what you want a cruiser is fine.
Use any cruiser with dual sensor boosters and a 1600mm plate+damage control. Rupture, Omen, Maller, Vexor, Arbitrator will all work well. This amount of EHP leaves a good margin of safety even if you kill the frig slowly (like with drones or something). Make an overview tab where only your desired targets will appear, switch to it when target appears in local, have warp disruptor and guns blinking, click-click-click the place where the target will appear in overview, once you start targeting, start aligning out, once target dies optionally pop the wreck and warp.
Dock up or bounce safes for 15 minutes. Repair, repeat. Piwates in battlecruisers will kill you every now and then, particularly if you operate in the same place for long.
Since you'll have to compromise your ship so much to be able to catch frigs reliably and tank gate guns for a bit, should probably not engage anything PvP-fit or anything bigger than a destroyer even if not PvP-fit. If a PvP battlecruiser starts shooting you, jump. If he has a friend on the other side, die. If anyone appears on grid as you're killing the target after you aggressed, warp. If you camp a highsec gate and are still not flashy, you should have zero losses unless you get bumped.

you could also use a smartbombing battleship such as a rohk which can pasivly tank the sentries and fire smartbombs.(I think)
then there are always carriers -------------

Nope. The range of a single disco ship will only cover a tiny portion of the 12-km-from-gate-boundary sphere.
Quote: then there are always carriers
Carriers don't work too well for catching frigates.
If you're looking to permatank the gate guns (which is a really bad idea solo), you could use a battlecruiser.

Good on you. One bit of warning though, you will lose set status extremely rapidly this way. If you want to return to highsec, either do this on a alt character, or learn to love lowsec ratting.

Thats why you place the bomber exactly in their path. The macro frigs typically all undock from the same station anyway, so theres only one spot on the gate where they will end up.

Edited by: Juan Sezole on 12/11/2010 00:28:33 Oh dear this one again.
Forget locking them as they jump in.
Instead train energy pulse weapons to 3, grab an active tanking BS (armor tanking works best for this as you will need multiple large cap boosters) fill the highs with Smartbombs, and sit 5500m off the exit gate in line with the Entry gate/Station they are undockig from.
Set your directional scanner to 50000km, scan as much as possible (thank you CCp for that nerf btw it has NOT been forgotten or forgiven), wait for them to appear on scan and then unleash hell with the smarties.
I would give you a 90% chance of popping them and a 70% chance of the ship and pod combo.
Intant Disco fun for all the family

Edited by: Death Becoming on 12/11/2010 07:51:09 I just created a BC for catching magnates.
I have a sensor strenght of 1200MM I have yet to see one get away.
The BC tanks the gates just fine, but if a non-macro player jumps in system I dock up and switch ships becuase my frigate catcher has gimped the tank to the point it wont last long against anything else.
I tried the smart bomb thing but not as effective as the insta-lock BC, and you kill pods with the smarties so your sec status goes down really fast.

Gate/ station sentries have uber HP, uber tracking and uber sensor strength, meaning you can not kill them, jam them or speed-tank them.
I haven't checked lately so I won't speculate on dps and damage types.

you could always do it in style...like in a capital ship with alot of sensor boosters. |

Omg !
I leave in Low-sec (mostly), null-sec from more than 2 years now
I am really in good mood today, so i gonna give you the answer you wait ;)
It is true, some advices here in posts above are good (the ones about loosing sec status very fast, about Logi RR = VERY bad Idea, about having a scout in the next system when you gate camp, about using some BC or HAC-HIC ships, about using Sensor booster IIs with scripts [so using a BS is a bad idea as you'll need more SEBO II because of loooong locking time of BS on Smaller fast ships], etc...)
In my opinion, you just need to know this to suceed in what you plan : * Depending on the ship you'll choose : Stay at more than 130 Km of ALL sentries and they wont shoot you (Sniping ships) or for exemple get into an Onyx (VERY easy to fit it for permatank gate guns in Low-sec, as some other ships too, but i LOVE Onyx , this is just an exemple...) and stay near the gate. * Try to use in your fitting, as much minimum 1 or 2 Sensor boosters with scripts to boost Locking speed. * ALLWAYS have a cloaked scout in the next system near gate to see what is coming (if 15 men gang is on the other side, you'll be happy to know it and leave your solo gatecamp before they jump in) ; * Wait, and you'll have fun, if you enjoy doing this. * Search on forums ALL tips about gatecamping in Low-sec, you'll see, the "good" ones give in general same advices (i can't give you all the tips here and now, it will be funnier for you to discover some by yourself... )
Want to enjoy a bit more this ?
try to do exactly same thing just few minutes BEFORE or AFTER Downtime and see, you'll catch lot of lol-carebears industrial ships with nice loots in cargo trying to "Run the gate while they think it is safer because less people are loged in"
Have Fun and, please, BLOW THINGS !

Two sentry do 300dps omni damage + awesome tracing, my tip use onyx, pasive drake, if you got problem with shield skils-ship, you have to use any battlecruiser, sentry should eat cruiser in 10-20 sec.

Step 1: Get a damnation mindlink armor alt. Step 2: Get a vengeance Step 3: Fit mwd, point, small cap booster(think cap 200's), 2 sarII, 2 eanmII, 2xsmall aux pumps, 3x150/200mm acs in highs. Step 4: Gang your damnation and vengeance up so that vengeance receives bonuses. Step 5: Tank sentries till you run out of cap boosters with a frigate sized vessel. Step 6: giggle in delight as the missionrunning unprobable tengus think a frig isnt anything to worry about on a gate in lowsec.
