You end up paying millions of dollars to "extended" tech support...
This is so crazy I kind of rubbed my eyes in disbelief myself, but it was reported in too many other reputable places to dismiss as a joke.
"[...] a computer repairman and his girlfriend in suburban New York, convinced the wealthy 58-year-old that he was the victim of an especially sophisticated piece of malware controlled by a devious group in Honduras, and that he and his family were also targeted for harm by a group pf Polish priests out to topple the U.S. government. [...] Davidson, convinced he and his family were in danger, agreed to pay Datalink not only for computer services to rid him of the harmful virus but to pay for protective services to guard him and his family. The costs, charged to DavidsonĘs American Express card on a monthly basis, eventually added up to $6 million. Authorities say the final cost of the scam could amount to $20 million. [...] The complex scam continued for six years before the two suspects, who claimed to be working with the CIA to thwart the Polish priests, were arrested as they prepared to leave on a trip to Iceland. [...]"

WOW... just wow.
It's sad to realize there are people around falling for such scams... the more worrying thing however is that people like that guy and his girlfriend exist.
I mean seriously, wtf.
How can such people live with themselves? __________________________________________________

It's just the tip of the iceberg.
These two scammers got caught, that's why there's a news story about them. Imagine all those people who pulled off something like this and got away with it...

That what happens when you have more money than brains. The most absurd part is that he got caught because of a different case... after 6 years.

This does not surprise me at all. Scams are all to common. Almost yearly there are at least two big ones that come to light just around central Virginia in the sums of millions.
I myself just recieved a ridiculous chain letter saying to send 3 dollars to each of the 5 addresses in the letter and then send out, in some fashion, the same letter replacing my the last name on the list with my own to continue to chain of cash into my own mailbox

There are a variety of idiots that infest planet earth.
Some are the anti-religion kind, where belief in deadly Polish priests out to get YOU is a tame belief (I have no faith, but my contempt for anti-religious bigots is without limit...)
Others believe that the U.S. governement through its super secret ninja arm is brillant enough to do ANYTHING, no matter how outragous, yet at the same time FIRMLY believe it is alwsys too stupid to succeed (no doubt due to the heroic and pure efforts by utterly perfect people like those in wikileaks....)
and plenty of other types too. You clearly fall iunto group two.
moron.
Play nice while you butcher each other.

In order to continue existing they are forced to belittle their victim and keep themselves in contempt. It is basically the victims fault in their eyes, as he let them do it.
The bane of all scammers. Some would call it the righteous judgement of God, as in: I have hardened their hearts so they shall not turn around so I must heal them.
