Sound Effects in Space / Eve Online
If CCPÆs goal is to make our online experience realistic, why do they have external sounds? More specifically, sound cannot travel across empty space, so why do they have it?
CCP Zymurgist, does this fall within the constraints of, ôGeneral Discussionö?

Check the backstory, the sounds are generated by the camera drones to give the pilot combat awareness.
So when something explodes, you know it did. or if someone shoots you from behind you aren't sitting there for 2 minutes trying to figure out why your exploding.
SO yes, there is no sound in space, but there is sound in the cokkpit.

Capsuleers in EVE Online hear sound because the Jovians, original inventors of the capsule system, decided to add sound so as to make it more realistic for the pilot inside.
Quote: After a while Anu's voice came back: "You're doing very well. Now we are going to activate the audio synthesizers."
"Audio synthesizers? What do you mean?" Pirkotan thought.
"As you know there is no sound in space, but when we were developing the capsules we found that people wanted to use as many of their senses as possible, thus we added the sound. By letting a computer create three dimensional sound we also add to the awareness you have while in battles, for instance."
Several seconds later Pirkotan could hear the audio synthesizers kick in; he could hear the low humming noise of the propulsion system and the sudden hissing sound of course-correctional thrusters.

Not in a computer game. Which EVE Online is. It's also fictional. *nods* :)

Good thing this isn't Reality Online. Then we would have been in serious trouble.

Having sounds isnt the worst thing. Ships desacellating without using front propulsors is worst.

if the intent was to be realistic, EVE space wouldn't behave like a viscous fluid, we wouldn't casually exceed the speed of light, and we'd all have to have a solid background in orbital mechanics (and lots of time) to get anywhere. However, none of these make for an exceedingly interesting online multiplayer PvP game.
also, it'd look pretty stupid to have a video game with no sound effects whatsoever, and rather than trolls whining in GD about how stupid it is to have sound in space we'd have trolls whining in GD about how cheap CCP were to not have a sound engine _____________________ Horrors! But perception of it isn't absolute. According to the backstory, the sound isn't real, but it is an abstraction of data gathered by other sensors.
Here's a real world example. Audio and Visual Representation of Various Sorting Algorithms
Of course a sorting algorithm makes no noise, but you can interpret it's actions as a sound. And potential gain useful information from it. and further more why do i even need a sig? |

Which leads us to the old philosophical riddle, "If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?"

Well regardless of the answer. You can wire up a radar to play a pre-recorded "tree falling" sound every time it detects such an event. and further more why do i even need a sig? |

what does this have to do with physics? your not very bright are you... >.<
here's another example for you, YOUR TV IN YOUR LIVING ROOM shows you pictures that are NOT REAL. Like you know when you say.. play an fps. and yet for some reason there is sound that tells you what is going on. Well eve is like that, you are in a spaceship, and the computer makes it act like a game. When the senors pick something up, it makes a sound for it.
now stop thinking that emulating sound somehow breaks the laws of physics lol.

Physics has nothing to do with computer simulation of the space surrounding your vessel. If you want to realistically imagine yourself into the POD, fill your baththub dive into it and switch off the light.
You are not located in space outside your ship, YOU ARE your ship, when you in a pod. Your brain sensor network is directly connected to your ship's sensor network. Some of the ship's readings perceived by your brain as "sounds". That's all.

Actually that one is covered in the back story too... here and is based off the Alcubierre Drive, at least that is the closest real life theoretical model I could think of.
