I lost a cyno kestrel to this once. Never bothered to petition it, tho.
He logged while in fleet with mods running (the cynogen). According to the timestamp on the killmail he was out there for like 8 hours.

I wonder how the logs can show nothing in this specific issue. I mean, it's just a metter of checking out the login/logout time on that character and confront it with the time on the killmail. login/logout times are standard information recorded on any log on Earth, while killmail is obviously accessible by the GM.

In this case might be all possible that server sees logging off in space as "warps at random, leaves ship -> pilot logs out" and not as "pilot logs out -> ship warps on it's own -> ship fades", if this is the case then proving 'truth' will be impossible from logs as this is EVE after all.

Popped this cyno-kestral in an empty system. Had been empty for at least 15 minutes....and he was barrelling along at full speed as well, watched him for 20-odd km's as it seemed odd.

I've heard it happens sometimes when you quit midwarp. So, do not quit in the middle of warping!

please don't spread rumors... If you log off midwarp, you will finish warping and then "mergency warp" after that, then disappear.
You should disappear after 30 sec if you are not aggro, if you are its 15 min.
And to the op, this regularry happens in 0.0 wars, there was a time few months ago when destroyed supercapitals spawned in systems they wanted to jump out. It's not an intended game mechanic, it's "just" the server being suck.

This has happened to me. according to the GM the timer on the screen is broken and you may still be flagged even though the timer says it has expired.
They didnt reimburse my ship.
Apparently they just accept this bug and expect everyone to magically realize it exists.

Lost a manticore in a safespot out in 0.0 five hours after I logged off.
I was going to petition it but remembered that 9 times out of 10 the GM response is "The logs show nothing". __________________________________________________

Very weird that the server don't realize that a client disconnects. One would expect the client to send some sort of "alive" message from time to time to the server. And in that case there would be absolutely no way for an account to be logged in longer than say 10 minutes without an actual client running.
There are two ways I can think of that might keep a session alive in this case, either you have a second client on a second account still running and the server interpret this alive message for both accounts. Or the client actually doesn't shut down properly, it still runs in the background sending alive messages.
Of course the server/client protocol might not have this keep alive message, but that would be really really stupid imo.

One of the last few times the player logged off at evening, next morning went off home, and about 13 hours later after he logged of, his ship was still in system, while he was unable to log in. |

There are logs?!?!
If the one they are about to excrete in reply to your petition is included, then yes, there are logs. Suggestion: Remove the "new topic" button from everywhere apart from the list of topics section within a subforum.
That'd save those with chronic hand/eye coordination some face. |

Originally by: CCP Masterplan If this has happened to you, can you please reply with the following details: Pilot name: Jalnov Date & time: 2010.10.30 03:12:00 System: Tama Ship: Guardian How did you realise it had happened? For example: Corp mates (or your own alt) saw your ship, ship was destroyed, something else? Game crashed, though it could have been something with my computer. Regardless, I saw him log out on my other account. Fleetmates saw Jalnov (me) drop fleet. They fleet warped ongrid to kill a megathron, possibly fleetwarping the Guardian around the same time I logged off. Guardian did not fleet warp, guardian did not emergency warp and stayed in place for a couple minutes, long enough for someone to jump in and tackle/kill my guardian.
Hope that is helpful, I still have an open petition that the GMs can't seem to understand my argument. They keep saying that their logs show that I didn't disconnect due to problems with the game, but my argument is that I didn't emergency warp like I was supposed to.

I had this happen, I was 350k off a gate in low sec, cloaked in a Rapier. I had no aggression and when I logged off I was decloaked but did not leave local. I was killed about 45 minutes after I logged off. The GM gave me my ship back without question.

In that particular case the ship was never destroyed.

If only there existed some little things that can scan a system and create a warpable spot at the location of the stuck ship at the safe spot... Oh wait, they do.

There's no functioning keep alive for what I can see. On an ice mining ship I keep getting complete connection losses on a thumb USB internet key lasting for *minutes*, the ship won't log off, won't emergency warp and once I get the connection up again, it happily completes ice mining laser cycles like nothing happened. - Auditing & consulting

No, it does not. Characters on the same account are independent of each other. You can even use your alt to fly to your stuck character on the same account.
99% of the time it immediately removes the other character from space. You don't really have to enter the world with a different character, just the act of logging in again on the account will remove your disco'd character. I 2box a lot and have issues where my second client stops responding to anything or the client crashes. As soon as I successfully log in again the character disapears (most of the time). I usually try to log back in before e-warp, but it never keeps me where I was and end up warping back. It's a real pain in an Orca or frieghter when that happens...usually have to just walk away for a few minutes and get a drink while the damn thing gets around to aligning and warping.

I think I know how, when and why it happens (after a certain change was made in client shutdown code) but it's also exploitable, so how do I tell? I CBA starting the umpteenth petition that won't be read because the GM is juniior and has no clue. - Auditing & consulting

If you have useful info that you don't want to share publicly, then please petition it and mark it for my attention (including a link back to this post).
Meanwhile, thanks to those people who provided the specific examples I asked for, I've found an interesting pattern. This is yielding some promising progress.

Edited by: Presidente Gallente on 18/11/2010 22:48:01 Got killed one hour later after logging by rats. Had to escalate. Senior GM investigated and gave me back my ship. Luckily I logged in with my sub-alt and this gave the proof that something's wrong with my log-out. The logs showed me still online when my client was closed and later my sub-alt was on. It has already happened.
A mate lost his Wyvern 12+ hours after he had logged off in it. It hadn't been in a gang, aggressed or any such thing. He had mearly logged on to change a skill and log off again. Was petitioned, but I think it's against forum rules to discuss/give the result.

Yep, you're right on the money.
My connection went down for 21 minutes last week, left Eve running for that time (forgot about it TBH). Character was still "logged in" when the connection came back just as if nothing had happened.
