from what i've gathered so far, you go up in rank with each complex you capture and gain faction standing accordingly. does this cap out somewhere?
let's say i join the caldari militia, do some FW missions-->gallente standing takes a dive, then i switch sides and do some complexes, rinse repeat, kinda doing a standings see-saw.
is this a feasible process or is the whole standing boost a one-time only thing and i'm better off just sticking with one side going -10 and grinding my way back up after i grow tired of FW?

You only get faction standing boost with each promotion, with an exponential rise in the number of complexes you need to capture for to get each promotion and capping out at the top rank.
So no.

Won't work. As you get promoted in your faction, you increase faction standing and lose enemy standing. But when you do the opposite faction missions, you will get demoted, losing the original faction gains while also losing original faction gaines from your new promotions.
You may be able to work if from working the side not quite opposite, i.e. going Minmatar to Caldari and back. Howevever, you lose standings because you will have to kill at least a few faction NPCs, so even then it's a net negative.
And complicating things even more, with a hugely negative standing to the enemy faction, the only way into FW with the enemy side is going to be a player corp taking you, and they're generally not going to take someone with horrible faction standings without a good reason.
Finally, promotions via plexing is awful. Slow, not fun, and dangerous. Missions are way faster, and you can make some decent isk at the same time.

Ok, this got me a bit curious. Suppose you want to get promotions on one side, but maintain a decent standing on the other? Do you get demoted for doing storylines that don't kill faction (but do lower your FW race's standing)?

In faction warfare, you get a big standings gain to the 2 friendly factions on each promotion, and a corresponding large drop in standings to the 2 enemy factions.

thx for mentioning this, i thought only complexes raise your standing. gonna do just missions then, don't like complexes anyway
i'll go with caldari and minnie then, since their FW missions seem to be far too easy anyway and test it out how i can spin this for an extended period with the minimum of standings repair besides doing FW.
if anyone is interested, i can post a detailed report when i'm done (gonna take a while tho).
