Edited by: Elizabetha Pith on 18/11/2010 06:30:15 OK so, I have been mission running for a long time (lvl IVs) and want to move onto lvl V missions. I also want to have a new training goal - Carrier.
I am in the position that I could train for any carrier I guess, although I am learning towards Thanatos as it's my ratial type and has nice bonus to Fighter DPS. Apart from skill time I guess they are along the same price as some Faction BSs.
What I would like to know is, between the carriers what would be better to run these mission comfortably, haveing checked some fits on Battle Clinic etc the twe favorites seem to be Thanatos and Nidhoggur.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated as well as arguments for and against just using a Faction BS instead?
Thanks everyone in advance
Edit - Ratial type for my Main of course

Technically the chimera and thanatos would be the best for these missions, however running them has very little to do with the mission itselfs and the local players. I'd worry less about how to sort the missions themselves and more on how to handle the pirates who'd like to relieve you of your carrier burden. Parrots, commence!

1) Carriers cant use acceleration gates, so you should accept only the mission that dont have them
2) after your first mission, the inevitable pirates will understand what you are doing and prepare you a very nice surprise.
3) i have no direct experience but people tell that rattlesnakes, navy scorpions and nighthawks can solo L5 ( its slow due to low dps but doable).

Ah well I currently use a Nighthawk for my lvl 4s, I guess neut towers would be an issue but might be worth looking into. Plus i'm not to fussed with how long missions take to do, I actually find them fun (guess i'm on my own with that then lol).
Yeah i'm aware that pirate would like nothing more than getting a nice killmail, but i have heard that a PvP fit carrier can handle the missions just as well as a PvE fit one, plus you'd have some defence i guess.
Thanks for the help ;)

Edited by: Headerman on 18/11/2010 08:52:40 Could do it. Have run a fair few L5's in 1 system before, never seen anyone else, let alone pirates.
It would be cheaper and more economical to dual box it with a couple of BSs though, one RR'ing, and the other tank/gank. That way, if you do get ganked, and you lose, the loss is pretty minimal.
Have heard Thanny's are good boats to use tho

If you get caught solo in a carrier you will die, regardless of fit.

You will be surprised at how few people are required to take down a solo carrier in a reasonable amount of time. Also a passive shield tanked Ishtar can also do lvl5's I believe (only against kin/therm rats I believe) and has utility high for a cloack.

Well I guess there are plenty of options for me to think about with regards to 'what ship' to use, and having thought about it perhaps a carrier would not be the best thing to go for.
I want to use the right ship for the job, but the amount of attention a carrier might get would probably worry me to much to undock in the first place.
Thanks to all those who have replied with advice, and not just flamed right away. It's certainly given me food for thought. Of course all the advice I can get is very welcomed.

Pro-tip:
Stay away from lvl5 missions and stick to maximizing your lvl4 efficiency (read: pimped golem/machariel/vargur/nightmare). The decrease in risk actually makes running lvl4 missions more profitable (and a whole lot less stressful).

I dunno, you can usually get 100m isk per mission, i find it worth the risk, dual boxing in a couple of cheap BSs

OK so taking all the advice from you guys onboard here's what i'm gonna do for the next 6 months or so.
I will continue to run lvl IV missions for now in my Nughthawk whislt training for a Golem, i'll still run lvl IVs after achieving my Golem. I think I have been lured into the idea of 'running lvl Vs in a Carrier' which sounds great, but taking into account how skill intensive it can be, interest of gankers and my own limitations in PvP (should I get Jumped) I think I will try and stick to, at least for now, to what I know how to do.
Mission running is part of the game I really enjoy, I love the whole PvE aspect of games and I guess i'd just cry if I lost a Carrier anyway. So for now my own 'end game goal' of being a capable Carrier pilot is on hold..
Again I thank you guys and gals for the help and advice you have given me in the past couple of days, although I have been playing for 3 years Eve is always a learning curve. Thanks again, fly safe everyone.

you can definately do a 5 in a passive rattlesnake, i've done them
i don't know that you'd be any better off vs pirates in one of those than in a carrier though
why don't you just find a corp with a bit of lowsec with some level 5 agents in it and join them? then you'll have a relatively safe area to mission in
either that or find a completely deserted area and just dock up whenever you see more than 1 other person enter the system

I don't care what anyone else thinks or says, that's cheating.
Yeah, I know, CCP approves because it brings in the moolah, but it is cheating, playing unfair, using a real world advantage to gain an extreme advantage, and it completely shatters any immersion (which is why I'm puzzled that almost everyone has an alt).
As for the carrier idea, I came across a couple just minding their business alone when I Was in low sec, and it's not as if any sub-cap ship would take you out. Unless they call in a small fleet to come get you you're probably safe. Just make sure to keep an eye on local.

Because for some people, joining a corp is the most overused and dreaded statement anyone can ever say on these forums. I'm sick of it. I like to play with people, sure, but that the entire game is balanced solely on the opinion and vote of the corporate is very irritating.
How many solo carrier pilots are there? Very few, if any. There should be more. People are simply too scared to do anything fun without 200 people behind them.

Some people want to have new experiences and fun in the game they play. Not only are the missions more exciting, it's also far more badass to pilot a ship the size of a city rather than the same thing you've been using for months if not years.

I can only speak for myself but if I'm solo and manage to catch a carrier, I immediately contact everyone in my corp, everyone online in my watchlist (including people I have watchlisted because I fight them regularly), secure a temporary ceasefire and get on an awesome killmail.

So in summary: "playing with other people shouldn't be the point of balance of an MMO."
I go solo regularly enough, but that's between the downtimes when not many are on from my corp. Small-gang action is where the real fun is. Otherwise I'd just play Freelancer or X3.

Depends on if they are PvEing for PvE's sake or doing it to fund other activities in the game. If you're using it to fund your PvP, min/max everything.

Yes, it is great fun to run lvl 5 in a carrier, even and "particularly" if you get jumpped by wannabe pirates or griefers.
Get two carriers and fit them out exactly the same and have them at the station where the lvl5 agent is (this is along the lines of: don't fly what you can't affort do lose; and when you do lose it, it will hurt you less psychologically knowing you have a reserve ship that is good to go). Have full insurance on your main ship, and leave the reserve ship uninsured.
Your carrier should have two heavy energy neutralizers fitted (the faction type for range), and these should always have "overheat" turned on (no damage will be incurred by the modules until you activate them, but once you do you want to get the most out of them immediately). These are used to neut any incoming tacklers, so you can make your way out and warp back to station.
If this doesn't work, you have two alternative options:
- Activate your triage module, put your two reppers on overheat, and self-destruct. It is very diffult to destroy a Carrier with 1.4M EHP, that repairs itself for 18K DPS in less than two mintutes. This is a valid tactic that was used by the Russians to defeat Napoleon. You will lose the ship, but you win the battle, and they won't get that Killmail to attach to their small epeens. This is the hero option.
- Alternatively, you can activate your triage module, put the two reppers on overheat, and log-off. This is the coward option, but you may save your ship.
In both cases, there is still a chance they destroy your carrier, in which case they deserve it. However, for this to happen they will need at least 20 BS + several tacklers, or bring a small cap fleet.
As for best ship and fitting, use a thanatos, it tanks 18,328 DPS for 3 minutes, has uniform resist between 75.5% and 76.9%, 1.4M EHP (1.9M with Slave + Akemon), and 1500 DPS:

What is particularly awesome about being on a carrier killmail with all those people? Its not like anyones gonna look at your kill, scroll down and go 'wow that guys so awesome!'. FFS like you said you had to contact a whole fleet load of people. Its nothing special. Carriers are common as ****e. Sig ---

If the carrier pilot knows their stuff, they generally get away, even with 8-15 people on them. And there is always the self-destruct route. So when the stars align, and I actually get the chance, hell yeah, why not bring the DPS to take him before he logs off or self-destructs or gets his own crew in to save him.
Originally by: Drakarin Yeah, I fail to see how calling in a bunch of people to swarm one target is anything to be proud of. I wouldn't gain any satisfaction from it. Why do you?
A better question is: everyone dogpiles caps, why don't you? It's not like he's going to be alone and friendless. Tackled/sieged/triaged capitals almost always lead to good fights as one side races to apply DPS and the other tries to extract them.
Since when did anyone need an excuse to get statisfaction from PvP?

The satisfaction in this case is from having caught him, not the actual combat itself.

Yeah, you can do it, but I wouldn't recommend it. A friend of mine lost a carrier to players, trying to solo L5s. He knew what he was doing, when he lost it though, just wanted to use the carrier to say that he uses a carrier to run L5s.
Usually he dualboxes 2 unprobable Tengu. One for tank/DPS, and the other for RR, and ECCM to keep both unprobable. Requires pretty good skills, but is very effective, and runs the missions pretty damn fast. ------------------- "Do you know what the chain of command is here?
