Upon training my army of Planetology Alts, I have decided to train one to Planetology V and Advanced Planetology V so that I can then re-position all my other characters extractors into the best hotspots I have available. However this is no easy task as the training times for each currently fall in at 12 days and 21 days.
My question is this, since the 2 skills description is very generalized it is not clear by how much it improves the accuracy of the heatmap when viewing a planet. Which gives a greater bonus? Going on some of the other things in the game usually Advanced versions of skills do less than their predecessor. e.g. hybrid turrets + blaster spec, weapon upgrades + adv weapon upgrades. Admittedly there are not many examples which is why I can't decide which may be better.
From the descriptions of the 2 skills it would suggest that Adv Planetology may be better as it says "further increases" as opposed to just "increases". However that again could be just a reference to the advanced tier of the skill and the little extra you gain on top of the big base of Planetology.
Would be good to get a definite answer from someone in the know.

At the beginning of PI, I found this page https://docs.google.com/View?docid=dhnp447p_9cb32qjzd. It has a nice image at the bottom of the page. I don't know though, if this still up to date. CCP may have tweaked numbers already.

One alternative to training them both to L5 is to perform the "extractor crawl" looking for the best sweet spot. Having those skills at L4 is accurate enough for the initial placements to be near the actual sweet spot, from here on, it's just a matter of "crawling" into the direction of the sweet spot based on the extraction total.
The process will cost some isk (to decom/rebuild extractors), imo but overall, the difference can be fairly noticeable adding an extra 5-10K to the total amount extracted in a period of time.

In my opinion these skills are relatively useless, especially at level 5. I myself use L3 in planetology for alts - dump CC near enough some hot enough blob and then spend few mil on extractors crawling around the area until I find the local maxima (or are happy enough with rewards). My main has both at level 4 and still have to use extractor crawl to find a bit better spot than the one scan indicates. Saves perhaps about 1 million per setting up colony.
Yes Level 3 is rather inaccurate but usually you can find the true local maxima somewhere in the 'yellow' area (if you scale the hotspot to be white dot). Extractors are cheap and even at 100 mil SP I have better things to train than push these two to level 5.

One of my alts has both trained to level V and I don't regret the time spent. I can't, won't, and don't care to give number reports on how it has paid off for me. I look at it this way...
Are you going to set up a group of PI planets and stay with them? Go ahead and do the Extractor-Crawl.
Are you going to be setting up new planets as you move around? (i.e. Different regions, W-Space, etc.) Train up the skills on 1 character. They build on the planet first with a simple look-n-drop. Then your alts can build on the same spots.

Adv Planetology uses the term "further" because it adds onto the increase you get from Planetology. Nothing magical or fancy about it's increase, just that you must have Planetology first.

Its really not worth it, Lower level of the skills find areas to extractor crawl over just as well as having both skills at level 5, i trained them on an alt and deemed it wasted training time, i ended up extractor crawling on them anyway.

Edited by: Melanice on 18/11/2010 18:31:12 Here is my limited experience. Once I hit 5/5 and started checking out planets... I found many planets that had quite a few extractors on them indicating a number of people were already there before me. BUT I also noticed on those same planets a number of sweet spots no one had put any extractors on. This happens more often then not.
My assumption is hitting Advanced Planetology 5 not only give the most accurate results but finds spots that others cannot find with anything less.
Seems to me that once the "more extracters in one location the less extracted" gets implemented, those with Advanced 5 will have a decided advantage.
