interesting concept but it's not like hulkageddon where the winner is whoever blows up the most. The only logical way of doing it is who can mine the most and that is not really something that is competitive. ------------------------------

I think it would work best if you did it with small teams. The contest would be more about the logistics of running a mining op more than anything. Miners, Freighters, Security, misc support.
Scanning asteroids so not to waste cycles Hauling the refined/unrefined ore protecting the op from all the gankers this contest would undoubtedly attract
of course, that includes you making sure people aren't picking up extra ore/mins they've stashed in a nearby station as well.

The contest should involve teams of up to 5 mining the maximum possible amount in a 1-hour or 2-hour period, without leaving a lowsec system (or possibly constellation), while fending off any attacks by the opposing teams, spectators, random hot-drops etc.
The ore mined should be deposited into secure containers which should be anchored at a POS not known to any of the teams until the contest starts. This would prevent people shipping loads of ore into a station in advance. Any fighting at the safe spot = disqualification. The organisers could leave someone there in a cloaked ship to police this.
For added comedy value, the POS should left on the most aggressive settings possible - attack if sec status is dropping, attack if aggression. This should discourage people from camping it.
To determine the winner, the teams should be ranked by (value of ore mined - value of ships + fittings lost) going by Jita prices as determined by the organisers. --- 34.4:1 mineral compression |

This was a long time ago when I first joined a couple years ago, but CCP hadn't gotten around to removing some old contests and one of the listings was something they had done at one of their fanfests (I think memory is foggy) Anyways it went like this:
A rorqual in a central location between where two teams were. The teams each had to mine the asteroids and bring the ore to the rorqual where it would be added to the running total. Anything went, you could go with a full hulk team with MWDs and have them deliver the ore in person, you could have dedicated hauler, you could even bring in combat ships, blow up the other teams haulers and miners, and take the ore for yourselves. At the end the team with the most ore in the rorqual wins.

Firstly I like to thank all who took the time to enter a comment. As I intend to reply to each of the comments posted in this thread; yours Oni, is the first that I wish to address.
I believe it is indicative of a general attitude of negativity towards mining and those of us whom choose to mine and is in part, one which formed the some of the basis for my wanting to sponsor a mining competition.
Secondly, I might also remind you, that in the World of Eve, nothing is possible in the universe without miners. Miners are the very backbone of an economy that is æsolely-basedÆ on the efforts and products we bring to Market everyday, and finds it origins in every asteroid belt, gas cloud, or lunar and planetary body known to exist.
Then lastly, I might ask you, æWhat is wrong with giving miners some overdue recognition for their dedication and æboringÆ work?Æ I dare say, had the Immortal Halada himself, started this thread; you might not have been so quick to scoff at it, else he rain down from the mining heavens above and smite thee for such blasphemy!!!

IMHO you're looking at it the wrong way ("Mining the most"). People will do everything to cheat and drop extra ore into your hangar. And using cans just won't work since they are way to small for the amounts a dedicated mining gang will churn out.
I'd do it the other way: "Empty that belt". Let the judges fly through the belts before the contest starts, count the roids, scan them for ore amounts. Then send in the contestants and see who has removed the most when the bell tolls. |

First, Mining does not make up the back bone of the economy. Sadly, most minerals are gained from non-mining activities. But beyond that, here's some questions for you:
- What sort of competition are you talking about? As previously stated, a contest about who can mine the most is ridiculous. Max skilled miners are all over the place, and they all mine the same amount, so a contest about who can mine the most, really is going to be about who gets bored first.
- How would you spark this, while still avoiding exposure to those that just want to kill you? As a miner, I go to great lengths to keep in quiet systems, watch local chat, and try to remember who the locals are, and who are potentially roaming for trouble. I don't see how you have a public competition that doesn't involve added risk from lul gank squads.
- How would you regulate it? I personally operate 4 accounts while mining, and I know some people are much more crazy about it than that. What about ore purchased off the market? There is a ton of it. Or what about just ore I happen to have from a few days prior? How do you verify the ore is actually mined during the time of the contest?
I don't see how you can possibly run such a contest. There really isn't anything to have a contest about, and any attempt would only lead to unnecessary loss.

No, I'm pretty sure the results of this contest would look exactly like Hulkageddon.

As long as you don¦t have the force to LOCK DOWN an entire system by supporting pvpers, this can¦t be done.
And if you have the force to lock down the mining system hulkageddoners will be attracted to it like flies to cows**t, so again i doubt this is possible.
Good luck with such an event.

I'm no miner, but I think it'd be intresting if you made it so that the mining system was assigned, and they had to have a destination for the minerals to go to. A destination that has 2 routes to it, a 20 jump high-sec safe route, and a 3-5 jump low-sec dangerous route. Now that would make things intresting.

Two groups turn up at the same rally point, 200km from a belt. On the "go" signal, they can do whatever they wish, but all team members must start at the rally point, and they are not allowed to leave grid.
Round ends when the belt is emptied.
The team with the greatest volume of ore in cans when the belt is stripped wins.
Version two: team with the greatest ISK value of ore in cans wins.

Now the idea starts attracting me.
While i would¦nt like to sit in a hulk during such a contest while hulkageddon, i¦m sure it would be fun participating in the protection fleet.
Knocking up some of those douchebags in their tankless ships could be fun, and imagine their faces, knowing there are 20+ hulks waiting to be ganked while not beeing able to pewpew them.

Hi everyone, sorry to have been so long posting again to this thread, suffice it to say that I have finally developed something of a contest outline and a great deal of itÆs content is due in part, to some of the ideas and comments submitted in this forum. While not all of the comments and ideas were exactly suited for what will become our first contest, there is certainly some possibility they may be incorporated into any æfutureÆ events, should that come to pass.
The following outline is a first rough draft and is submitted before this forum for any positive recommendations and improvements.
The 1st Annual Mining Contestàwill be a small æregional-matchÆ. Player selection will be by personal invitation only. The sponsor will designate the time and place of the event.
Eligibility Criteria:
a)Pilots: æNoobÆ pilots belonging to NPC corporations æonlyÆ will be selected with accounts no more than 90 days old.
b)Ships: Frigate-class vessels and Tech 1 Industrials only. (Old school)
c)API Keys: æLimitedÆ API keys will be required to enter by the sponsor and will be screened by EveMon; to ensure æselectedÆ players are as evenly matched as possible by skills and levels of training. All contestants will be properly advised on how to change their API key information for their protection, once selections and screenings have been completed.
Command & Control:
a)All selected players will be required to æjoinÆ a newly formed corporation, setup at an NPC station by the sponsor specifically for this event. All contest communications during the event will be restricted to the Corp. channel, and individual teams will be encouraged to adopt similar æfleetÆ communications for added security.
b)Player/Teams û will each be assigned a separate Corp. hangar to ensure security for each team and provide the sponsor with some means of maintaining integrity and accountability.
c)The sponsor will adopt no other security measures. Each player/team will be at the mercy of his/her/their surroundings, much as it would be any other day. Howeveràto make things interesting, the sponsor will declare any team disqualifiedàshould either or both of a teamÆs members get podded. (No after lives) Hehe.
d)Any ship losses incurred during the course of this event, will not be grounds for disqualification, but ship replacements will be the responsibility of each team, much as it would be any other day.
e)All contest assignments and/or missions will be identical for each team competing, and will be issued to each team by means of a æprivateÆ contract. A new contract will be issued as each team completes a contract. The team, which completes their contracts first, will be declared the winners.
Well thats about all I've got atm thats concrete anyways, but if anyone would care to comment...I would like some ideas regarding assignment and/or mission content, and remember...these are frigates and T1 industrials.
TIA, LTC

GL with killing the d-bags. They fly dessies that are meant to die anyways. By the time the warp in, lock, and open fire on the target it is already to late. Unless you are sitting on top of the miner with a Sebo shipp that can volley the dessies, you would still have a low chance of success. About all you would do is get the loot. It could just be that the purpose of your life is to server as a warning to others. |

I am a long time member of Eve and have played since Beta, so when you talk about "Old School" I know exactly what you mean. When 5,000 players was a record, The War that changed Eve forever, when NPC's were actually a problem. Anyway, I have noticed the market prices and how it keeps getting worse and worse, for us who actually are Miners, from the Macro's or whatever whoever you want to put the blame on. I believe something needs to be done to fix this problem and if it means a contest to see who or which team can mine the most, then so be it, but believe you/me, I will be on the PVP side to help increase losses as to hopefully 1 day fix this market. ORE/ICE has dropped so low, you can't make a living doing it anymore, no matter how long or how many accounts you have. These macro's are killing our market and it's not only a loss for us Miners, it hurts the PVPers as well. Less and less people will take the more dangerous route or to mine in low sec, because the prices are so low, it's just not worth it anymore. So YES, I agree to this contest and believe it needs to go on. ------------------ System Information ------------------ Time of this report: 12/4/2007, 07:31:50 Machine name: ALIENWARE Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Ser |

Excuse my own bump here, but after having posted my last reply, my brain farted and I thought it might also be a good idea, if I made it a point to select two player/teams from each race.
Amarr, Caldari, Gallente, and Minmatar...all represented in this 1st contest. Bragging rights, smack-talk, or whatever...should add just enough bravado to make it interesting. What says ye mates?
