A jump clone allows for you to swap to a different clone, which is installed wherever you install it. The requirements for installing them in NPC stations has to do with standings.
Basically, if I have my current clone with +3 implants, and I install a new jumpclone in Jita 4-4. I can go to Amarr (or anywhere else), and then jump to my new clone. This will allow me to be in Jita 4-4 in a matter of seconds. Note, the implants remain in my previous clone and I would have to put new ones in the jumpclone if I wanted them. After the cooldown period, you can jump back to the previous clone, or another one.
The biggest advantage of a jumpclone is if you want a 'combat' or 'learning' clone. If you just sit in a clone with +5 implants, you can get your skills up faster, but it is a lot more expensive if you get podded. So you might have a second clone without implants (or smaller learning/combat implants) that you will swap to whenever you plan on going out to pvp. |

Jump Clones are "extra bodies" that you can use
To obtain them you need 8.0 Standing with an NPC corp that has medical bays OR You have a friend with a Rorqual and cloning vats
Either way its 100,000 isk per body and you need to have the isomorph skill trained as well

Since the demolition of learning skills, training time isn't a huge deal anymore, so the biggest advantage of clone jumping is probably the ability to hop out to deep nullsec where it's interesting on the weekend, then hop back to high to do your boring mission farming on the weekdays (or whatever, you can imagine a similar scenario with any combination of dramatically different areas, maybe you're simultaneously working on rep in deep Amarr and Gallente and just don't want to deal with a 30-jump trip when swapping mission types.)
While "throwaway" pvp clones with nothing over the second or third tier of implants in power/expense is indeed a thing you can do, honestly I get more mileage out of one clone being kitted out for shield/missile, one being implanted for gun/lasers, and one being fitted for heavy capacitor use/active tank for PvE/w-space.
The limits/mechanics on JCs are as follows:
1. When you jump, the only thing that moves is the engram-being that is "you" and your isk, you don't bring along any gear, implants, etc. So if your JCs are 50 jumps apart, make sure you're actually buying things for the right clone in the right place, because otherwise you've gotta ferry them manually. Jumps are limited to once per 24 hours.
2. You can only buy a jump clone at a station with a medical bay (same stations you can anchor your main clone in case of death). You require 8.0 faction with them to make this purchase. Since corp/alliance faction counts, hopping into a "holding corp" which has the faction, buying your JCs, then leaving the corp is a popular alternative to actually farming the NPC reputation needed.
3. You only need to buy your JCs once. When you die, you go back to your _medical_ clone. You can have one JC per point you've trained in infomorph psychology, meaning theoretically you can have 6 "active" bodies around the universe. Few people actually find that many useful. You don't have to "upgrade" JCs to accomodate your SP total, that is only needed for the medical clone you go into when you're podded.
4. You can only clone jump from a station (or, I think, a capital ship clone vat, but I haven't messed with those). So you can't use this to go deep into 0.0 and then just leap back to high-sec without getting podded (for instance). You have to be able to dock to do it. But on that note, you can leave the clone you're jumping _out_ of in any station you can dock in, you're not limited to ones with medical bays. |

Your medical clone is separate from your current clone ("body") and jumpclones ("extra bodies").
You always go to your medical clone when pod death occurs (your "respawn point"). The location of which is on your character sheet as your home (mouse-over for more details).
The medical clone is the only clone that can be upgraded, i.e. regardless of what clone you are currently in when upgrading, you will always upgrade your medical clone.
You cannot have two jumpclones in the same clone vat. Medical clones are kept in a separate vat now, so you can have both a medical clone and a jumpclone at the same station. Leaving a jumpclone at a station that already has a jumpclone in a vat, means the jumpclone already in the vat will be destroyed (along with any implants it has) to make room.
If you move your medical clone to a station without medical facilities, you cannot upgrade it before undocking. This is extremely risky, as you could be podded before you move to a station with medical facilities and can upgrade.
Clones retain the appearance of what you looked like at the time they were created.
Trivia: You are already dead (all pod pilots are clones).
EDIT: I had a much better reply composed on another computer, which I didn't get to finish. I may post it later. The above is a repost that should do for now. |
