Hey all - just looking for advice,
I joined a FW PVP corp yesterday and went on my first fleet op - it was a LOT of fun and we got into a few fights... unfortunately though during the course of one of them I got blasted by a HAC. No biggy though, I was only flying a thrasher and id purpose fit 16 of them an hour before so that I've got a decent number of ships to waste... however...
On my way back I hit a pirate gate camp and went POOF to their smartbombs and ended up losing 50 mil of implants.
Now, I knew I was taking the risk... I didn't expect to get podded on my first day... but what are ya gonna do? xD
Anyway - I bought a set of +2 implants for 10 mil-ish and I'm almost back to normal... however, I'm gonna go on another op tonight and I'm worried that if I keep losing implants like this I'll become skint very, very fast.
My question is - should I keep buying implants and keep my training times relatively quick, or if I'm pvping should I just accept that I'm going to train slightly slower?
Thanks,
Phyei :)

No. Buy implants, make jump clone. That way you don't have to lose implants and you don't have to avoid fights.

What I do is using jump clones. I do not know if this is easy for you though.
When I'm going to get into PvP, I use a jump clone without implants (or maybe very basic ones that I can afford to lose a few times), that way I keep my other clone with an implant value of several hundred mil safe in a station.
Please note you can only jump clone every 24 hours though, so if you PvP every day, well, I guess it's better to not use any implants. Also don't jump to a clone in the same station, that will hurt. ------------------------------

when you get to the longer skills (25days +) you can keep the isk down by only having 2 attribute implants in. you can probably do this now but sticking to an attribute-related skillplan when you're new is so boring :)

Well for the duration of the fight you'll train slower but indeed, jump clones are the solution to this. There's a number of corps that offer free jumpclone facilities (like Estel has one); otherwise you need a 8.0 standings with a corporation to be able to make one (infomorph phychology skill) - beware though that some corporations don't have medical facilities!

if you pvp frequently jump cloning all the time will just get annoying.
and with a +2 set it costs me more to upgrade my clone than replace the implants

The corporation may still bear the name but as I understand it the corp was sold on, so can no longer be truly said to be Estel's. _________________________ Join Channel 'Mentors' for PVP and PVE help and advice ingame without changing corps. You can have different clones with different attribute pairs and change clone according to which skill you are training.
Realistically it was poor luck losing your clone that way in low sec, you can further protect yourself by docking up and grabbing a noob ship.

Smartbombing BSes on gates isn't really that common in lowsec. You were just unlucky I'd say. In general, you're fine to warp directly to gates in lowsec. If you want to be extra careful then you can warp to a celestial off your main travel path THEN warp to the gate since that will put you at a different angle that hopefully won't get hit with the smartbombs. It can also be handy to grab a shuttle or noobship or something just for 1 more layer of protection, but note that this isn't foolproof. If your shuttle or whatever gets blown up by a smartbomb, you incur a session change timer which means you can't jump through the gate the smartbomber was at. You'll need to manually warp somewhere else in system, but chances are the smartbomb pilot will have many smartbombs and "stagger" their timers so your pod will get popped before you can align and warp.
As for implants, anybody who PVPs even occasionally has a "training clone" and a "pvp clone". Personally I spend most of my time in a +4 clone (about 100 mil to lose) but if I know a fleet op or something is coming up I'll jump to a +2 clone with some cheap hardwirings (maybe 20 mil to lose). If you're only in lowsec you can probably get by without doing this since most of the time you can get your pod to safety. If you're in null, though, a big chunk of the time your pod is a sitting duck waiting to be popped due to the abundance of bubbles. Obviously it's not possible to be in the right clone at all times, hence the reason +4 implants are more commonly used than +5s.

I've been looking into getting a +2 clone and a +4 like you suggested, however - reading about jump clones, I can't actually buy one because I don't have 8.0 effective standing with anything yet? Am I reading the EVElopedia right or am I misinterpreting it? All I've got right now is a few at about 3.9 :(

Edited by: Phyei on 23/11/2010 09:38:49 That corp looks cool - I'd be up for joining it to sort out my clones (an awesome sounding service!), but won't I have to leave the militia to do it? Is there any limitations to how quickly I may enter/leave the militia? I don't wanna leave my corp only to find I can't get back in again :(

As others have said, the best way is to have a PVP clone and get cheap implants for it.
Once you gauge for yourself how often you get podded, you can get more expensive ones. Also if you do missions and get LP, implants from the LP store are significantly less expensive.
Right now I fly with +4's for PVP, since I don't get podded so much, and the occasional implant loss in isk matters less to me than getting my skills trained faster. Since you can only jump clone once per day, it is kindof hard to have a PVP clone separate from your learning clone if you PVP a lot.

If you mean the NPC faction warfare corps, then no, you can leave and rejoin at your convenience.
If you're in a player run corp, then explaining you're leaving to get jump clones sorted out shouldn't cause any issues, as long as you say what you're doing before you do it.

Getting podded by a smartbomb camp in lowsec is mostly just really poor luck. In more than a year in the Minnie/Amarr FW theatre it has never yet happened to me. You will get podded occasionally but if you know how to save your pod after a fight it will be a rare enough occurrence that it's not financially crippling.
A jumpclone can be a good idea, but personally I'd get too fed up with jumping back and forth.
You're in a good corp - TRIAD are a decent bunch of guys. Have you talked to more experienced people in your corp about the problem? There are a few places in the warzone that are more likely to be smartbomb camped than others, they should be able to tell you where they are. Then either avoid those locations while in a pod if you have no intel on them or make tactical bookmarks off the gate so you can see if it's clear before you warp down. Your corpies/corp leadership should also be able to reassure you that you'll be able to get back in if you leave to go get a jump clone - just tell them you're doing it, I can't see it being a problem.
