We've got an Update Coming Tuesday - so make sure you've got a long skill training. At least 5 days. If you've got some long skill you were meaning to take care of ... now's a good time to do it.

Sound advice, CCP's been pretty good with timing these few pathes. But it wouldn't shock me if they didn't actually test this mini expansion.
For similar reasons, don't download the patch right away. Google "boot.ini eve online" for a bad incident.
and further more why do i even need a sig? |

I would add that you make a (temporary) safe copy of your "c:\program files\ccp\eve" folder.
The chances of the patch download screwing up the original install is high and CCP won't normally get the repair.exe backend sorted until a day or two afterwards. This will save you from downloading the entire client all over again.

Help me understand. The anticipated maintenance period is only 3 hours long. Does a major update just automatically complete your long training time or...?

the servers usually are down longer than expected and then when they do come up they go down a bit later, and then it usually takes at least a few days to become stable again. okay well that is pretty much worse case, they usually do a good job now.

If your skillspeed when doing learning skills is higher than another skill you want to train, you may as well train a learning skill and redistribute the acquired SP after 14 december.
Say it takes 7 days to train Logic to V at 2,700 SP-hour. Your Heavy Missiles V (also a Rank 3 skill) takes 15 days because you arenŠt remapped for it. It's smart to train Logic V now, transfer the SP to Heavy Missiles and - Profit! - you trained it in 7 days instead of 15!
More about that here.

People saying to set a 5-day skill are being kind of pessimistic, but it is not unusual for a patch to result in a downtime longer than anticipated (usually an extra 4-5 hours) or result in an instability that makes it impossible to log on for some or all players (can last a day or so). I'd say that you should make sure that your queue is at least 30 hours long, otherwise you risk not being able to log in to add skills before you run out of training time. ---

The reason is that in a few patch deployments in the past the server has been down for several days, this has not happened in a while but it's still always a good idea to set a long skill just in case.

Update Issues Thread.
Check here and find out.
Yeah the five days may be over kill - but if everything's fine - then you can just log in and change it ... whereas if everything isn't fine ... then you may wish you had those five days ...
*shrug*
The other thing about this - is that sometimes the game works fine for some people - but not for others. Thus, you will commonly see a series of complaints that are really giving some people some trouble - and which result in a patch several days into the new deployment. If you're one of those people needing the fix for that problem ... you might not be able to log in for a few days - or - have serious problems trying to play the game even if you can log in.
Go read those issues threads - and it's fairly common for some people to be getting mad as hell 3 or 4 days after the update when THEY still can't play.
Now ... for myself ... I retired from being a tech guy a few years back and I'm afraid that while my experience in software development and testing might be of use to CCP ... and I do help out on occasion ... mostly ... after over 20 years of debugging software and computer problems ... I'm tired. That's why I retired. I don't wanna debug some gaming companies computer problems for free. So ... I set a 10 day skill - and go play another game for several days. I check in ... read the issues thread ... and see how things look. If it looks like they're having a fairly clean update ... then I'll go ahead and update things. If it looks like things have turned to **** ... I go back to playing some other game until they've sorted things out.
*shrug*
But this all depends on your priorities. If you've got things going on in the game you want to get on with (I'm actually somewhat in the middle of something now ...) then it might be worth it to just dive in and see how it goes.
As Arnold said ... "What's the worst that could happen?"
Ha! Ha!
Another aspect of this though - is that it gives me a break from the game. If I do the same thing all the time ... it gets boring. So - I've got different characters in the game that let me do different things ... and ... on occasion - I take a break and go do something else for a while ... and ... updates ... seem like a convenient time to do that ...

Oh, I am not disagreeing with you.
I set a 4+ day skill myself. I even contemplated setting a 14+ day skill but decided against it.

Oh ... only the link was directed at your comment ... the rest was in response to an earlier remark or two ...

Sorry about that.
In any case, I see they're already got another patch coming out ...

...unless learnings are the fastest SP rate you have, which you can then reassign to a slower SP/hour skill
