Not a "vet" by most peoples' reckoning, but far from newb, soooo:
Back in my day:
Salvage was worth something.
L4 missions were hard (aggro'ing the room was not something you did unless you wanted to pull some insurance-fraud with a bare chassis). Saying you could solo "Enemies Abound 5/5" in a Vargur --and having a Vargur, for that matter-- put you out as a cut above.
Insurance-fraud for high-skilled industrialists with nicely-researched BPOs (Anyone remember the few days before the nerf on the Jita 4/4 undock?)
People ratted in losec belts.
Rigs were one size, and very, very expensive, only the very rich used them, and only on at least BCs (rare), BS, or T2 variants, which they usually would never risk in PvP, because losing them would genuinely hurt. (ISK 1bn wasn't the new million then, to put it mildly).
No wormholes or Tech III.
Probing was much different, and much harder.
"Free-Form" contracts.
The community in general was much smarter, much more aware, and much more self-reliant. And infinitely less whiny and self-entitled. Because it was often CCP who were first to tell that ilk to "HTFU or give me your stuffs" when they whined.
Forum-trolling was an art, and proper trolls were worthy of respect instead of [/facepalm]
People didn't start whinge-jihads to nerf things into uselessness just because they didn't like them. And those that did got properly sacvaged in the forums.
The forums actually worked.
"WiS/Ambulation" was a vision that everyone could respect and be inspired by, not a bitterly ironic/cynical curse.
Space --yes, even hisec-- felt properly huge.
"Our logs, they show nothing."
There is a fine and proper artistry to wielding verbal scalpels, such that the crap-poster you've slashed doesn't even know they've been cut. But verbal bludgeons -- Those are just fun. |

Back in the day:
1) I GCC'd in high sec accidentally by shooting a wreck instead of salvaging it, there were no warning messages for such stupidity.
2) I jumped into a high sec system with GCC from low sec thinking it was another low sec system, see above explanation.
3) I killed many freighters who accidentally set their AP to travel through low sec and didn't realize the mistake until long after they were podded.
4) I flew BC's without rigs because rigs cost several times more than the rest of the ship and fittings combined.
5) I still own an anathema with large probing rigs.
6) I had my own personal carrier and that made me the envy of nearly all of eve, people shat themselves when I bought a second.
7) People used vagabonds instead of cynabals, cynabals were crap.
8) I ran lvl4's in low sec in a t2 fit BS with nothing but reds in local and this was considered a reasonable thing to do.
9) A Plex cost 200M isk.
10) 200M isk was a lot of isk.
11) You could count the number of titans and motherships in game on one hand.
12) Pods had a delicious squish sound when they died.
13) Snowballs and launchers every Christmas.
14) I saw a machariel orbiting a station at over 10km/s.
15) My hurricane then was faster than your dramiel today.
16) an 80 man fleet was big enough to make eve news.
17) My stealth bomber was ideally suited to ninja alphaing careless frigates.
18) I went on a freighter escort mission through low/null sec. The Troll is trolling. |

ships were shiny and EVE was weird(which is what pulled me into the game in the first place).
characters started with an actually acceptable sum of skillpoints and list of skills.
what else...? umm...
some modules required their skill at level 5 and not 4 or 3
new player training tutorials made use of a whole training complex in space instead of a single area with a sad and lonely rat.
rats in training complexes used to drop items that gave newbies some isk when sold.
rookie ships had a damage control instead of a single ****** piece of tritanium.
Minmatar ships had actual rust, and if you looked hard enough you could see bits falling off of em.
you could actually tell the attributes of your character prior to completion of the character creation.
also, you could give your character a few more attribute points.
the introduction video was actually interesting and told you of the story. (there was a time when I used to check the 'play introduction at next login' checkbox every single day)
no ships and/or modules had a preview button. |

The character creator was interesting and fun, even though I had no clue what I was doing or signing up for. Then they replaced that with the freedom of starting with almost no skills and no racial bonuses to attributes, and an avatar creator that is better on graphics, but somehow not better at making characters interesting to look at. At least Caldari don't have that stupid shoulder flashlight laser thing though, that thing was stupid. They say that in learning the game Go, it is best to lose your first 50 games as soon as possible. This is because Go is complex, and the only way you will start to get an idea of strategy and play is by first sucking and failing as hard as you can. So...In EVE, it is best to get your first 50 deaths by combat as soon as possible. |

The Jedi are not hiding they are the ones crying for change. If anything this game was ruled by Sith proud and strong with no fear of the unknown, willing to take risks and just generally more fun.
Back in my day: - A whine thread on the forums got you a text lashing you would not soon forget, and then hunted in game. - BoB was a common subject of whispers and fear, and Goons were terribad players that were laughed about with fleets of frigates (I guess that hasn't really changed that much). - Noobs started with a decent amount of SP and some useful skills. - You either learned the game and got hooked or you tried it and quit while wondering WTF just happened. - More than 20,000 players online was HUGE!! - CCP had the second or third largest supercomputer in the world running their game iirc. - Gate camps were fun and interesting and you typically picked up a few recruits from those you killed instead of hate mails and whine threats. - Carriers were godlike mythical creatures. Titans were unholy demon spawn that were so rare no one believed they really existed. - Losing a ship actually made you cringe for the loss. - Sov warfare was interesting, but a mind numbing grind shooting POS after POS until your eyes bled. - People used to help one another in local. - 40 people in a gang was a big deal. - New Eden was F***ING HUGE...then WTZ came along. - Missiles were awesome. - Gallente ships had face melting power and were to be feared if they got within range. - Scanning with probes actually took real skill and there were many tutorials about it on youtube...probably still some out there. - T2 was a milestone worthy of your efforts.
There's a lot more but I'm done for now. |

Hidden belts existed and where usually just off grid of normal static belts. When seeing a capital made you **** bricks. I'm not that old to remember when BSs where top dogs.

Back in my day,
- We were able to have 15 drones. (5 for Drones V, 5 for Advanced Drones V, 5 for ship bonus per level) - Losing a ship meant something. - You could warp even if you were warp scrambled (had to initiate warp before they pointed you) - Arkonor in low-sec. - The spinning EVE logo on the logon screen that made a cool drive by noise when it spun close to the camera. I used to watch that thing for hours. - Using 3 mwds on a Thorax to go 17,000 m/s and using the directional scanner to find drones that people left in the middle of space. - There was no T2, no capitals, don't even think faction ships where in either. Best ship in the game was a Battleship.
I'm sure i can think of more if i tried but meh, 2003 was rough, you kids today have it easy...

There were huge threads because BoB bridged freighters into low from 0.0 because this was judged as bad metagaming from many players.
Goons were successfully in disbanding BoB which was judged as bad metagaming from many players.
Already in 2006 players were wining about bad 0.0 and bad low sec.
And of course the 0.0 was really empty. When I was a noob, I bought a cheap frig and travelled through 0.0 30 jumps without meeting a single bubble or camp, just for experience the universe. I miss it.

~ Doomheim Corporation didn't exist. My first character was biomassed, along with the 2nd, and maybe 3rd. Can't really recall, but Cassus wasn't the first. Pretty close though.
~ I spent more time in Rookie chat than anyone has a reasonable right too, with something like 6 accounts going at one time, and probably 8 total accounts over time. Only 2 now, and one is 'resting'.
~ The Drake was King, and Armor was the thing, if you weren't flying a Drake.
~ Tengus didn't exist; nor did any of the other Tech 3s.
~ There were no Incursions, and there were no Wormholes.
~ Ambulation was an idea.
~ Back in my day, EVE was actually pretty cool. Null was still open, Lowsec was pretty quiet, and Highsec was full of Ganker Corporations looking for easy prey.
Not saying it isn't cool now, but gankerdom has spread like wildfire since then, and the pirate population has turned into Alliances with multiple Corporations, rather than a number of small Corps hanging out here and there and trying to grief people. Usually quite successfully.
~ Back in my day; nobody said, "..because of Falcon."

IB4UGA Do not assume-áanything above this line-áwas typed by me. Nerf the Truth, it's inconvenient. Nerf it cause I can't fly it. I want to fly a badass Mon Calamari stlye-ácruiser painted to match my Tron clothes. |

Let's see:
1: no overview. 2: no atribute implants. 3: no hard wires. 4: no capital ships. 5: no mining ships. 6: 70 skills in game total. 7: server crashed or emergency rebooted 2~3 times a day. 8: no overheating weapons. 9: insane tracking and lock times on battleships towards frigates. 10: no Tech 2 ships or modules at all. 11: no battleship spawns even in 0.0 space. 12: no POS's or outposts( fighting between early aliances happening in regions with NPC stations exclusively). 13: max clone covered 20 million SP. 14: new players started with 8000 SP and a basic frigate. 15: no jump clones. 16: warp to 0 via bookmarks exclusively. 17: no weapon upgrade stacking penalty. 18: creating super safe spots using the entire capacittor on a BS( you ended up 600 AU from the closest gate). 19: double MWD's or more depending on the ship. 20: insurance payed almost for the entire cost of the ship, minus modules, regardless of ship class. 21: no T2 ammo of any kind. 22: no skill queue. 23: escrow for selling items. 24: no in game browser to check the forums. 25: no weapon stacking. 26: actually seeing missile launchers on caldari ships. 27: ships going thru their 2nd and even 3rd redesigns, graphics wise. 28: patches or fixes every 2~3 days. 29: Doomsday being a single large area of effect weapon. 30: Cyvok of ASCN showing the first titan in game in 2006( avatar titan).

I remember when...
1. Having a fight with VETO was a big thing 2. No matter what fleet you were in EVERYONE had a sensor damp on. 3. Rattlesnakes cost over 1 Bil and were the pimp mission ship 4. Probing got changed(1ST TIME) and for a week you could catch mission runners in low sec with 1 probe first time. 5. Probe skills meant training hard to be able to not send 3 mins trying to scan down that target. 6. Rapier and Lachsis were Solo ships you didnt want to see in your overview 7. Domi with all NOS in highs and draining everything in sight. 8. Gate camping in Amamakie and having fun not worried about getting 20 super caps dropped on y |

And some more...
31: Drone regions didn't exist and neither did drones obviously 32: Most 0.0 regions only had code names, and not like we have today. 33: Sleepers didn't exist either obviously. 34: there was a jove event where pilots collected the DNA fragments of a jove pilot where the jump he was attempting failed. 35: Mercenary coalition was a feared and respected aliance, with seleene owning a ragnarok titan eventually. 36: There more of a sense that people needed to work together to make any sort of decent isk, unlike today. 37: No double speed training to 1.6 million sp for new pilots back then. 38: Took me 3 months of serious playtime to get into a battleship, today it's a few hours of work at most. 39: Cyno networks didn't exist. 40: Price of minerals weren't at the insane levels they are today, especially tritanium and Noxium. 41: We had 2500 people on an average weekday and maybe 4000 on weekends, most concentrated in high sec. 42: First BS spawns right after the castor expansion in december 2003 were nuts, with 20 ship NPC gangs spawning at 20 kms, including webbers and warp scrambling ships. 43: My armageddon BS on fire more times than i can count from the above.. but i loved the difficulty 44: No officer spawns back then, just named T1 gear as the top of the food chain. 45: No moon goo at all. 46: no renting systems in 0.0 as there wasn't enough people there as it is in those days to enforce payment or kick anyone out. 47: Gangs from the first aliances rarely exceeded 50 pilots and even then, took several days notice to organize, not on the spot. 48: Fountain even back then was the most sought after region, as it was small enough to be easy to patrol, and only had 3 entry points, and plenty of NPC stations to dock. 49: CVA and ushra khan were at eachothers throats( first is an Amarr role playing aliance and the second was a minmatar roleplaying aliance)....Hats off CVA for still existing today after all this time. 50: Evil thug was the CEO of the original AAA aliance. 51: Venal was and still is today, an unclaimed and useless region, just like stain... 52: Laser boats were the most popular in 0.0 primarily bacause of not needing ammo to fire their guns, and there having few places to ressuply ammo back then anyhow. |

How could i forget:
53: Armor tanking didn't work, as damage leaked thru hull as the Armor HP was going down, unlike today where armor needs to be at 0 before hull HP starts dropping. 54: No slave, cristal, snake or any kind of specialised implants that boost stats by 50%. 55: No booster drugs of any kind or dealing with their side effects. 56: Fond memories of chasing mOo out of Tpar-G when i was part of the Original FA aliance in fountain(2003). 57: No anomalies of any kind that could be scanned down. 58: Realistically, it took 4 ships to farm NPC BS spawns, as they kept spawning faster and faster, and we couldn't keep up beyond 90 mins, as they spawned every 2 minutes by then. 59: Mining activities resumed to recycling worthless loot into minerals as everyone was NPC farming. 60: HP on all ship classes were quite a bit lower than they are today, and were increased in an attempt to make fights last longer.
I'll think of more, but that's 60 examples so far.....
