Even though we can bombard an area from orbit.
I frankly I am a little disappointed that we can't suicide gank the dust bunnies by crashing our ships into them on the ground.
Now that would look as funny as hell, you are happily killing people in Dust and the next thing you know a 1.4 KM long mach for example crashes head first into the ground, killing most of your team mates Any Spelling, gramatical and literary errors made by me are included free of charge.

The F2P + cash shop model is super successful and is quickly becoming the norm for MMOs and will continue to infiltrate other genres. CCP is smartly aggressive for giving it a go on consoles, where it's had few attempts but some decent success. The game has to be good enough to back it up, though, and in a really crowded FPS market, it's tough. Going free to play is the best way to infiltrate that market, because then, unsure consumers won't hesitate because of a price tag. And games that rely on cash shops often make really good revenue. The lower income per person is easily surpassed by the expanded user base.
Honestly, I hope to hell it works. It will help to finance both itself and Eve Online, create a more enveloping universe, and potentially create more excitement for this kind of game. |

Profits?
1. It is free to play 2. It is free to download 3. NONE of the microtransactions affect balance, they are all cosmetic. 4. FPS players don't bank sit
Profit, no, it is unlikely they can recoup the cost of development much less ongoing operations and support; even with using unpaid employees for customer service.
Nope, we are not subsidizing an investment, we are funding a boat anchor.
You know who is laughing all the way to the bank is Sony, what a win win for them, they got an exculsive, will sell some new consoles and some dumb company built a game for their platform with no hope of making a profit. I'm an American, English is my second language... |

EVE is a game built from the ground up to be subscription based. Hell, there's an in game market centered on it. This was before the rise of free to play.
EVE is just better as a sub based game rather than a free one. |

I'd rather pay a set amount per month for all the content in a game than play the game for free and have to throw chunks of cash sporadically for specific content. Mind you, I don't believe in supporting segregated content where useless fluff gets more priority from the devs than actual gameplay because the fluff is what brings the money and is, therefore, the smarter thing to manage time for. Resident Haruhiist since December 2008.
Laying claim to Out of Pod Experience since 2007, plain and simple. Keep the trash out of Out Of Pod Experience, If it's EVE Related or deserves a Lock, it does not belong here. |

It's thinking like that, that is holding us back. No one is saying that you have to pay for it. Just let others pay heaps of cash in the store and you can play for free. The idea of segregated content is something I haven't heard anyone at CCP talking about.

Yea LoL. Don't include pay to win but provide means to unlock things through play or by paying. The only thing you can't earn from playing are character skins.
Doesnt really matter what you think about the game but it's a tried and tested model. |

When will CCP hire a decent ad writer?
From the Dust page linked in OP: "In DUST 514 players earn ISK, an in-game currency, by winning battles, doing missions and more. Additionally, players can buy Aurum through the PSN Store. Players looking to expand their experience can spend either ISK or Aurum on a variety of microtransaction purchases. That said, DUST 514 is not a pay-to-win game. Players purchasing items with Aurum will not result in an unfair advantage over players who only spend ISK, the in-game earned currency."
There's a lot of clunky, awkward text there, but one of the standouts is "that said..." I literally facepalmed when I saw that. You're selling a game to future Dusty's, not defending microtransactions from stEVE's (hey, a new sub goal for my eve play: get everyone to use Dusty and stEVE). Seriously, hire someone good NOW, before its too late. |

OP is right, we get screwed, we subsidized development and now F2P model - isn't socialism wonderful!
Now, I and most of my PVP corpmates survive EvE monotony with idiotic chat in TS and alt tabbing to other games (Minecraft, World of Tanks, DayZ, etc.). Too bad I can't alt tab to Dust :-(

Because the financials is only half the point, and it is the half that hardly matters.
The other half is our sandbox will contain players with 0 investment, from a culture of 0 investment, who are totally transient.
We have a culture when you can't even change your name because we want people to have to live with the consequences of thier actions, in comes players with no history, no investment. I'm an American, English is my second language... |
