Given that I run multiple accounts while doing missions,
Highs: 4x Small Tractor Beam 4x Salvager I (current pilot doesn't have salvage 4)
Mids: 1x 10mn Afterburner II 1x Large Shield Booster II (I did say it was mid-mission salvaging, crap happens)
Lows: 1x Damage Control II 2x Nanofiber Internal Structure II
Rigs: 3x Salvage Tackle I
It's not enough room for Angel Extraveganza level 4, but it's enough for most L4s I get out of the agents I use, and more importantly it's got a GTFO tank and a decent enough turning speed to be able to get out of situations quite fast, even if I keep it around long enough to finish off a few more wrecks before it warps out. Likewise it has a top speed fast enough to beat almost every battleship I own barring the machariel so not only will it be able to keep up while doing its job but it'll be able to catch up if/when it has to dock and unload before continuing to loot/salvage the mission.
If it were post-mission cleanup I wouldn't be focusing so much on survival and (non-cargo sacrificing) speed.

Edited by: Mara Rinn on 04/12/2010 06:00:32 My Noctis pilot uses Salvager IIs. Combining the Salvager IIs with the Medium Salvage Tackle I rigs means the Noctis is salvaging most wrecks on the first cycle.
I have been holding off loot & salvage until after a bunch of missions. I don't need afterburner, MWD or other propulsion modification since the Noctis can reach far enough if I bookmark the appropriate wrecks. I don't expect much in the way of suicide ganking (there are plenty of other noctises in my mission hubs) so I just use an instant undock bookmark to get the Noctis out of harm's way.
At present I'm using 5 tractors, 3 salvager ii, expanded cargobays and a sensor booster with resolution script.
The Noctis keeps me clicking buttons non-stop from warp-in to warp-out. It's almost fun.

1. Bookmark 1 wreck in each room. 2. Turn-in the mission. 3. Go back and salvage with a MWD.

The time your spending sorting the crap out is costing you more than the space it takes. load it all and stack/sort it en masse in station.
WTF, I'm debating fitting for a salvaging ship. I've only been out of nul sec since thursday and somehow i've picked up an infection.

I'm going with 6 tractors, 2 salvagers in the highs, AB/MWD + Sensor Booster in the mids, and cargo expanders in the lows.
Going to use T1 salvage rigs for now, and T2 when i can be bothered to train up to use them.
I'd rather select all and dump it into cargo. Go to the station dump and sort. If it sells better as is, goes into sell can. If not it gets reprocessed because the raw mins always sell.

Oh Yes, I salvaged 3 missions and promptly scrapped my salvage destroyer. The Cormorant is now next to useless. If you train up the ORE Indy skill, you can virtually sit in the middle of the plex and reach everything. I recommend 6x Tractors and 2x salvager II's, and mount a sensor booster with targeting range scripts.
Targeting range seems pointless. It already reaches 75km without skills, which means you need only long range targeting 2 to reach further than its maximum tractor range. What are you going to do if you lock something beyond 80km anyway?
Now it does have a crappy locking speed (around 4 seconds on a wreck or can with sig analysis 5) which makes me think targeting speed would be useful. Then again, with 10 max target locks you may not even need that.
If only there was a mid slot item that gave more max locked targets...
Oh yeah, about my sig... you have now read it.

4x Tractors 4x Salvager IIs
10mn AB II Cap Recharger II
2x Cargo Expander IIs Nano II
3x Salvage Tackle
May drop to the 5/3 tractor/salvage mix, but this setup works beautifully as is. AB works fine instead of a Micro because you get a 68 km range on tractors at lvl4 ORE, 56 km at lvl3

A word from the friendly competition...
wow
Tried one out with my alt yesterday and it is a complete game changer. I think we'll see the trend that moves us back to a point sometime before the Tyrannis loot nerf where very few wreck fields are abandoned. It quite simply devours wreck fields. IME, the 5 tractor, 3 salvagers and a SeBo w/ script is the way to roll. Good news for mission runners, even better for folks harvesting Nano Ribbons in WH since it will dramatically limit your exposure time. Ninja Extravaganza, Strategies for Ninja Salvagers

Simple:
highs 4x TBs 4x Salvagers
mids 1x 10MN AB 1x SeBo - Scan Res script
Lows 3x Cargo Exp II
Rigs 3x Salvage tackle
Can salvage AE lvl 4 complete with room to spare, SeBo to get those wrecks locked up quick, get the skill to lvl 4 and you're dandy.
I did ponder about the lows when I first got it, putting Inertia wotsits in there and DCU etc, but they are cheap enough now that if you get ganked, who cares. So Cargo Expander IIs are the way to go.
As I said - Simple

Edited by: Maximus Lionhart on 07/12/2010 08:29:33 A Noctis with 3 cargohold expanders would have about 3000m3 space. It is more than enough to hold all the loot from a Haven.
So if you are someone who wants the salvage and loot, the Noctis acts as a 2-in-1 ship. You don't need to come back on an Iteron or something.

5 tractors/3 salvagers are better then 4/4 split, tractoring takes longer then salvaging in my experience even with t1 salvagers |

Noctis 4x TBs 4x Salvagers
1x 10MN AB 1x Medium Shield Extender II (for the oh ****! moments)
2x Cargo Exp II (~2,3k cargo is enough for pretty much all missis) 1x Sensor Amp II (+2 target locks = 12 locks altogether)
3x Salvage tackle

After running some tests on sisi this seems to be the best fit for multi account cleanup. Gets pretty much everything in one cycle and has not run out of room yet.

What about a "Ninja Salvager" Noctis build? I'm not saying a raider that would take loot or tank or escape before the missioner attacks, but rather one that simply probes the mission runner down, goes in, salvages only, and gets out?
I would think that in this case, the tractor beams could be reduced in favor of the combat probe launcher, but what else is needed? Does it have enough CPU and Power grid for an expanded probe launcher and the salvagers?

A ninja noctis would be rather pointless, since chance are that you'll only ever be able to salvage one wreck at a timeà so even with a probe launcher, that's 6 highs you're not using, and you're in a slow, non-agile, slow-locking ship ù none of the things you want from a ninja ship. Sure, you might salvage that one wreck a little faster, but that gain is completely lost when combined with the slowness of the ship.
The whole point of the Noctis is that you don't move. You just sit there and let your ozom-range tractors do the work. As a ninja, you can't do this, and thus that whole point is lost. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

I tried on eout yesterday. Had to fit in a hurry, so it's not optimal:
5* tractor, 3* salvager II MWD, SB II with resolution DMG Controll II, 2* WCS (Unfit as needed) no rigs
(This was more for lowsec travel and to escape the clutches of any opertunistic frigs on gates.)
Even with Ore industrial only at 2, it simply ate 3 lvl 5 mission wreck fields so fast I was unable to loot while tractoring and salvaging.
If I was to change anything, I'd add a signal amp in low, and another tractor when I get rigs, just to keep the cans comming in time.

The Ninja Salvaging Noctis is actually called Fleet Issue Stabber or Drami (which kind of sucks as a looter actually). I doubt either of them will outpace the Noctis in a room where the wrecks are yellow to you, but it will be a fun race. Ninja Extravaganza, Strategies for Ninja Salvagers
