I recently purchased a maelstorm but I am not getting anywhere near as much alpha strike as I should be, despite calculations showing otherwise. I shot a Badger MKII on gate and he didnt die? This seems to me like a really big problem.
I calculated the damage my shells do easily as I know the time for my shell to reach the target x km away is exactly 0, and I know velocity = displacement/time, so I know the velocity of projectile is very high. Then, as we can assume the shell's mass is greather than 0, I input my figure for the velocity of my shell into the kinetic energy equation 1/2 m.v^2 and I found out energy is very great, too great for Badger MK II to survive.
I have also tried other ships such as Abbandon and Rook but have have been getting the same problem, however when I try same calculation with Raven and Drake I get no problems? It seems to me like CCP needs to increase gun in the name of balance.
I have noticed a similiar bug with invention chance too.

Edited by: Alara IonStorm on 05/12/2010 06:05:28 Did you know what setup they were using, you can get between 15-25k EHP on a Badger Mk II and they sometimes fit passive resist plates(Possibly to the Ammo you were using).
He might have tanked your guns.

and afaik, the dmg number have nothing to do with kinetic energy as it relates to real physics
did u consider resistances on the target?

As you said your shells travel instant from your gun to the target you should have put the time dilatation into your equation. In this case we have 99.99% the speed of light and thus for your shells time nearly stands still.
Now you have to think of aging (how long can those shells withstand the radiation out there?) of those shells, as they will be falling apart on their way to the target. That's why you get so low damage. Public Idea Tracker | 24 Hour PLEX |

But guns are instant hit so time to target = 0, as opposed to missiles which take time. Please increase gun dps

So if you want to go all real world pysics on us. Then lets throw some newtonian mechanics in the mix. So with the projectile having near infinite velocity, and there for accel cause it needed to get that fast. it has Force= Mass * Accel so it has near infite force. newtons third law states that one of these will happen.
1. your ship is thrown in the oposite direction of the projectile at near inifite accel. 2. your ship gets torn apart due to the reaction force. 3. the guns get torn off your ship. 4. all of the above.
1. Also at traveling at such a great speed i'm sure there will b some funny quatum mechanics coming into play as well. 2. That much energy should be enough to destroy some mass due to e=mc^2.
If your gonna bring the real world into into bring it all in.

You can certainly say v is going to be infinite, and it would be greater than c, the speed of light, in turn it would invalidate one of the most beautiful physics equation e=mc^2.
If you look it with earth (classical physics) formulas, we can agree that the projectile was accelerated from rest (or negligible speed your ship were traveling at compared to infinite velocity it's going to accelerate to) f=mv/t, force going to be infinite as well, and Newton states that if that force was applied to the projectile, you going to experience the same force applied to you.
Now we are wandering into unknown physics, if an infinite amount of energy was applied to you, you probably form a black hole, or a big bang of yourself, thus creating a whole new little universe consists of your mass only. Seeing you won't have the pleasure of possessing a proper brain then, I think we have the privilege of naming your universe 'troll'.

Your calculations are wrong.
If your shots hit the target immediately, it would mean that they would travel faster than light.
As we all know, when an object approaches light speed, the world around it starts to age faster than the object itself.
This means that the problem is simply that the badger pilot died of old age before your alpha strike hit him.
