You should first try to get a decent frigate. |

You have comitted the #1 sin of Ships and Modules forum Being vague will only get you trolls and stupid answers.
So what do you need the big ship for? Is it PVP or PVE? Is it in high, low, or nullsec? You need to specify at least these if you want to get any useful advice.

Or get a frigate, learn to play the game and decide it for himself in the future.

Either that, but some of us like to have long-term goals before we start diving into a game you know.
Edit: Still he does need to learn the basics first. Like, what kind of ships to use against what in general.

Well, he's playing Supercapitals Online, of course the long-term goal is a Mom or a Titan.
I, for one, would stick to the frigs for now. People usually f*** up their skill plan due to the haste of being part of the supercap boredom.

well I am right now in a destroyer the game gives you after completing the agent missions in the beginning, and I would like to use it in PvP.

N E V E R fly to pvp what you can't afford to lose. This is the only thing you should know, the rest is entirely up to you.

Prepare yourself to lose a lot of ships. If you don't have experienced omrades to show you around pvp, all you will have is your errors to learn from. And the beaty of eve is that errors cost you your stuff.
Carriers can not enter highsec, and if you are running missions for income, then yes, look at the battleship of your choice. Just don't forget that the fact that the 'Make active' command does not give an error does not necessarily mean it's worth undocking in a ship. You'll have about two months training time before you can put up a decent fight in a battleship. They'd also cost a lot to you, I imagine (in the 100 million range).
Stick to smaller ships, your frigate and destroyeer, as mentioned above should teach you the important things. Also, don't be lazy to read up on the things you plan. There are a lot of very helpful guides around.

Yes, but bear in mind that 'afford to lose' is not the same as 'afford to replace'. I fly plenty of toys I could not afford to replace, but still have the stuff I _need_ parked up.
Anyway, to answer the OP. Carriers are big. And slow. And have quite a lot of tank. And an OK amount of firepower.
They _require_ someone else to help you move them around, and they're also not allowed to enter high security space.
They therefore are somewhat ... niche, in terms of what roles they can fulfil. I'd suggest, therefore, you hold off on considering a carrier until you know you need one.
Battleships make quite a good goal - they're general purpose workhorses, and will net you frigates and cruiser skills along the way. They're good for doing PvE content, as well as PvP, where carriers... well, I suppose you can do missions and ratting in a carrier, but it's also a great big 'come kill me' beacon.
Choose what you think you'll have fun doing. Train that, get good at it, and then ... choose something else. Carrier is a very long term goal, and the road is one that will be boring if you don't do something else along the way anyway.

Yep its an awsome idea. Buy several PLEX with RL cash and sell them in game for ISK, then buy a char with alot of SP, then buy him a carrier and rat in low sec with it, if you send me a mail when you start ratting we could hook up and double up on some missions.

Considering that Racial BS5 is a prereq it's not like it's really a choice. if you want to skip guns you can go gal (which sounds like everyone favors for carriers anyway) and use a domi until you get to your carrier. I've got one character I've got pointed down the carrier path. But he's getting his large hybrids since the additional training for a Dread from a carrier is minimal.
Bear in mind that a properly skilled carrier is a 2-3 year skill plan so you'll need something to do while you wait for it and you can get into a decently fit BS relatively quickly.

Edited by: Magnus Orin on 09/12/2010 17:53:08 Train your racial frigate to 5 and get into AFs, Ceptors or Ewar.
Lose at least 20 ships pvping to get some experience around session change mechanics, overall pvp mechanics, and time for your core skills to train.
Train racial cruiser to 5 and participate in as much pvp as you possibly can. Step may take a year to a year and a half. You also need to have all of your support (tech II tank both shield and armor, tech II drones and drone support skills, capacitor skills, and fitting skills to 5)
Train racial Battleship to 5 and begin training support skill for Carrier. From this point, you should have a strong grasp of quirky Eve mechanics, including kick out stations, session change timers, how cynos work, proper scouting and intel, as well as the income to support the purchase of all capital class ship skillbooks.
Then, in about a year after you begin the previous step, you should have max carrier skills and be able to undock in your new, fully fit and ready carrier.
So, in short, focus on the battleship first.

Edited by: Phaedren III on 09/12/2010 22:15:44 Edited by: Phaedren III on 09/12/2010 22:15:23 Carrier is not a bad goal to have.
None of you guys had GOALS of flying frigates. You all wanted some big badass ship, so the attitude and snide crap is unwarranted.
OP: Keep in mind a Carrier will be a LONG training time, it will require a corp/alliance/coalition to support, and you'll need to have the income to replace it.
It's much more likely that you'd be playing for a while then make that transition, or make an alt for it, etc. You'll want to be enjoying the game and learning stuff and making friends (and enemies) on the way, so worry about that stuff more.
It's better to find out what you enjoy in/about the game, THEN find the ship/skills to support that. Rather than finding a ship/skill/career that you'd think you like, then try to play in a way that will use it. IE I kind of wanted to buy a freighter but I've never had to haul that much stuff personally. So, saving my isk for now.

To the OP, carriers are great, but so are nearly all sub cap ships. if you only have one account, keep it in sub cap ship class for a couple of years. Sub caps are pretty fun

Stop looking at all the things you could fly and don't train for them. Get the small stuff first. The thing that ****es off any real cap pilot more than anything else is someone who doesn't understand the game mechanics getting into a cap. You want to get the small stuff anyway, you'll have a lot of fun in it now and a carrier is only good in some circumstances. ============================================= "Only the dead have seen the end of war" - Plato
