I had the exact same thought, but I seriously doubt it'll let us hack player containers :(
Otherwise, while it looks like a pretty ship, I don't see me ever using it.

With the release of Incarna, will there be a way to showcase all of these museum pieces?
If people can't walk around looking at all the nice freebie ships that never get flown because there aren't any ways to mass-produce them, ooh'ing and ahh'ing how awesome it is that you have them - what good are they? 10-1 says you take one of these to an Incursion site, it will get blowned up. I wish CCP remembers what the first rule of EVE is:
First rule of Eve: Don't fly anything you can't afford to replace.

Edited by: Magnus Orin on 09/12/2010 17:14:52 Nice, if the Primae -> Noctis was any indication, the Echelon may be evidence that we are going to see a dedicated science ship BPO in Eve soon.
I think a dedicated science vessel with hacking and code breaking bonuses would fill a small hole in the toolbox of ships imo. Sarcasm - Because i'm too far away to strangle you. |

This to be honest, as it sounds like it won't see much use outside of the new Sansha invasion mechanics, which aren't going to interest a majority of people anyway. How about something we could all use? Like a ship with bonuses to hacking, archaeology and scanning in general? A super-covert-ops frigate.

Hmmmm free hacking ship.
My wish? The "useful" version (i.e. primae --> noctis) is used to hack into abandoned/offlined POS structures so we can clear out that debris without having to blow the station up.
That would be awesome.

Cool ship CCP! :)
Is it possible that it could get the Primae->Notis treatment?
i.e will we see a build-able better version of the ship for day to day use? (more slots, some tank, some gank, seeded T1 BPO, concord frigate skill book?)

"superior hacking capabilities for use on most known password-secured devices." It would be a big step up if we could hack player "password-secured devices". Stealing from secure cans would still get you agro.
I absolutely love these one off free ships. Yes most will be hanger queens but I like collecting rare items.
It sounds to me like there will be a production version of this that will become very important when battling the real sansha incursions. I believe I remember them saying you will have to do some hacking to complete them.

So basically what you're saying it that it's completely impractical and mostly worthless. Why not just release it as a full ship like the Noctis?

Edited by: Kovid on 09/12/2010 18:12:09 When you hack sometimes it spawns npcs. So it has a faster cycle time and twice the range. But since you can only have one special hacker per ship another frigate could fit more and do the same job or better. Cycle time is 2 seconds faster. And it's a gift ship so if it explodes you have no others. You can't put a cloak on it to keep it safe until you need it so it seems best left in high sec.
I hope the art department didn't waste months on this ship when they could have tweaked an existing model. For instance the response to the Naglfar complaints was that it would take way to long for the art department to put another turret on.
A free holiday ship it is. So it can't be much anything useful or it would eventually create a market like the unique ships that CCP doesn't seem to want to approach again as would eventually be thinned out to the point their value would make them something real collectors would want.
But it seems its more likely part of the Sansha invasion storyline to be used with that. All the people involved in the RP and the actual interaction of that should be happy. If that's the case then the art department basically spent the time to make a 'prop.' I'm not sure how I feel about that. I guess it depends on how much time and compare it to releasing a new ship or editing an old one like a Naglfar(granted it is seems balanced now except skillwise) or the Scorpion.
Is this the cloaked ship on the login screen? It is a stretch since the ship itself can't cloak.

Getting this ship negates any good CCP did with removing the learning skills. I just want a ship that's not totally useless for Christmas, is that too much to ask? OK, the Zephyr was kinda useful, but give us a combat ship FFS, not a one-slot-wonder --------------------------------- Pillage, then burn. Everything is air-droppable at least once. There is no 'overkill.' There is only 'open fire' and 'time to reload.

I'd speculate (based on prior CCP actions) that the account must be active on the 14th. Essentially at downtime on the 14th, CCP runs a special job that places a redeemable token on each active account. That token can be redeemed (by any character on the account) for the ship. At downtime on January 3rd CCP will run another job to delete any remaining tokens.
We add a time-limited token on 14 Dec but you can activate your account at any time before or during the window and redeem the ship.

I like the look of this ship but, um, what is it going to be used for?
Nothing, as far as I can see. You can't scan down and run hacking sites with only one module, and if you're going to be using 2 ships anyway, there are much better options.
I hope eventually a 'real' ship will use the model, because it's a very nice one.

There's a possibility CCP will introduce new uses for hacking for helping deal with sansha incursions, but either you can hack those sites with existing ships, in which case everyone will use those so they don't lose an irreplaceable ship if npc's blow up it's paper thin hull, or only the echolon can complete them, which seems like a recipe for disaster and endless griping from people with inactive accounts during this period :p

Its a nice ship and once again the Art team have done a super job however...
Its yet another free ship that will get very limited use but yet has taken as much time to design as if you were to add in a full combat, market bound ship. We have had a lot of free ships in the last few years but few new additions to the line up and none to the standard T1 listings that have some glaring holes.
What about Tier 2&3&4 Destroyers, a ship class thats almost completely useless now we have a dedicated salvage ship. What about Tier 3&4 Battlecruisers, probably the most popular class in eve and yet we have are sorely lacking in choice. What about Tier 4 BS, think how much salivating and joy a new BS for each race would bring. What about all the faction ships we are missing such as faction BC and Destroyers, that would add much more depth to the game instead of just the ones that have not been added to in many years.
While i love the gesture of all these free ships i would much rather the time was put into developing and expanding the regular ships we use every day. We have had so little changes/additions in recent years that things are getting quite stagnant and the addition of meaning full combat ships (particularity accessible T1 ones) would be so warmly received that i am surprised we have been left waiting so long tbh.
Thanks though tis a nice ship.

Lame, just like all the free ships CCP has passed out in the past. Another usless honk-o-junk to clog up my hanger. I'll park it right next to the useless PI ship and the useless scanning solar powered ship.
It's not like they would lose money giving us a real ship that could realy be used and not a butch of junk.

I'm calling it right now...
2011's Christmas ship will be a plucky little frigate that can fit the finest <insert race>'s analyzing skill modules, and a freebie little data analyzer.
2012's Freebie will be a svelte little mining cruiser straight from ORE industries, equipped with a top-o-the-line gas harvester that even a newbie can operate... and 200 m3 cargo hold.
2013 anyone?
/me looks under the tree, looking for another present besides socks after all the buildup. ___________________________________
