Originally by: Corozan Aspinall Happy Holidays may be more accurate but it just smells of political correctness.
It also touches a raw nerve with some people to push stuff like that which basically says 'don't be offended by our culture - we'll change it to something valueless to appease you!' etc.
So a lot of utterly atheist people who loathe Christianity will cling to 'Christmas' Holidays like a super model to a pork chop regardless.
Personally, I loathe most everything about the current state of the Christmas holiday, except that it gives my family another reason to get together, sometimes in totality. I say Happy Holidays because I loathe saying Merry Christmas because I hate the fact that it is a Holiday that currently revolves around consumerism, when it is supposed to revolve around the celebration of someone's life of minimalism, which I try to distance myself from.
In many situations æholiday greetingsÆ, in any form, are rather meaningless greetings or farewells that unfamiliar people pass anyway, so I hold as much weight to said grouping of holiday salutations as I do "have a nice day" etc.
Point being if one feels inclined to say, insert specific religious saying, then say it. If not then say what one pleases; if someone greets one with an opposing greeting to what one would normally say, then one should greet said person with their preferred greeting. Just be happy that they are greeting instead of clubbing you across the head.
I agree with the HTFU mentality when it comes to words and saying and taking offense, but I do not go crying about stuff being politically correct and then just start mouthing off in opposition just to be edgy like some do, no saying you are one of those either. People crying about politically correct **** annoy me as much as people crying about insensitive use of words to be honest.
You feeling like this is a politically correct movement makes me think that you would rather not hear anything other the Merry Christmas and would rather offend someone by saying Merry Christmas, if someone would be offended by that, then to saying Happy Holidays and cover all your bases? Even if it is a politically correct movement one needs to just deal with it. That is what populations do; they evolve their norms and values over time. It is not 'politically correct' if many within a population realize that there are different views on how things are done and Happy Holidays represents the season in totality. As someone above said, it is an all encompassing saying and a lazy way to great people at this time of a year.
In my opinion, the æpolitically correctÆ phrase is a new phrase made popular by the old establishment that currently is taking offense to the fact their once previously dominating æcultureÆ is being diluted. But that is how progress is made in my opinion.
