To reduce load on the Eve Clients and TQ, we have moved the rendering of character portraits to be performed server side, and then served to all the clients from the ImageServer that we built for EveGate.
This means that we are persisting the state of your character when you create them on SiSi and then recreating them on the server that renders the character portrait at our end. What we would like all of you to do is to pay close attention to all the details when you create your character, and notice if anything changed when you get the server rendered version of your portrait when you next log into the game.
This is easy to do, after you create your character initially in the character creator we store a temporary portrait to use in the client until the server rendered version is ready. You can find these temporary images in: %UserProfile%\AppData\Local\CCP\EVE\ ôYour singularity cache Pathö \cache\Pictures\Characters
Each time you create a new character, a new character portrait will show up there.
When you log in after the server rendered portrait is ready, this picture will be replaced by the one from our image server, so please make a backup copy if you plan to show us the original as a reference if something changes when it is replaced with the ImageServe one.

Okay, just to be clear on things I'd like to ask a few questions...
Q.1) Is the new render server the one which is creating the aliased portrait images just now, and if so, will it be anti-aliasing them at a later date?
Q.2) (I only have one slot free, so I'm using it to practise with...) - If I create a new style avatar for one of my existing characters - how much time do I have available to copy the image from my cache, before your server replaces it..? Do I need to be really fast for example, or do I have until my next log-in..?
Q.3) Is there any chance of accelerating the recycle-speed on Sisi for a while, so that we don't have to wait 10 hours between creations..?

Another question - once this comes into deployment, there's gonna be a *lot* of people using this, so...
Q.4) Any chance of a stress test, nearer to the date; for us to jump on, create and delete/recycle/create again, as much as possible within an hour, say...?

All the portraits that are rendered server side should be anti-aliased already.

I updated the post to explain this better - the client portrait is cached for 24hours, so it won't be replaced until after that time.
I'll look into Q3 and Q4!

This. Any Information about the quality on JAN/2011 of this renderer? Cause up until now it sucks, tbfh.
Will we be able to see our avatar in 3D, like we can do previews for ships on TQ now? Any plans into this direction at all?
Another one. Any plans on making the Char in the big selection screen a 3D one like we see now in the creator? With movements and all?

This char was made 24+ hours ago and I miss my bigger EYES! Anyway, the prog on the right is gimp with zoomed view (dunno how it does it for aliasing on Win7 64Bit.. original from server is extra).
The picture found at the destination you gave didn't contained hair and seemed a bit better antialiased as the picture shown in the client. Though, quality is still not impressive.. http://img694.imageshack.us/i/166228091512.jpg

It appears the image server isn't correctly reading the color values for the hair.
Whilst recreating my character last night, I noticed that whenever the char refreshed, the hair (and particularly beard) colors did not update until I adjusted the slider.
This same bug appears to be present on the image server - as a result the char has a bright yellow beard and black hair.

I can't wrap my head around the OP. What is she saying? It's probably because I haven't eaten, but something about our local portrait folder vs the server or summat.

Essentially, what it's saying is that from now on, when you create a character on your computer you'll create all your in-game portraits (with whatever your machine's capable of creating), but 24hrs later CCP's server will replace them with cooler ones, which should be lovely and smooth.... (but) ....they'd like us to grab the 'before' shots, so that when the 'after' shots arrive we'll be able to see if they're server is doing it properly...
I hope that made sense...
Also, I think the instructions were worded for PC users - I dunno how it works on a Mac.

This is the kind of thing I'd like to see, personally.. Though with a bit more life - like in the Modelling screen.. :)))
On another note - having just created that portrait for 'Dawn', I'll let you know in 24hrs how it's looking.
I did 'Kerli's' more than 24hr ago, and it looks great in-game, and better than I remember it (smoother) - but I don't have the originals for her, so it may be 'all in my mind....'

Well, apart from that disturbing note, I'd just note that the lighting isn't right any more. Her skin appears glossier than before, and I guess, not what you'd chosen from the renderer.

Edited by: Hiram Alexander on 20/12/2010 20:50:56 I just went back to my folder, and I see that there are snapshot images from the 'extra' images I took when I was in portrait mode....
1. Does this mean, there's a chance that we're going to be able to switch between them, or..
2. They're generated 'there and then' instead of waiting 'til I've made my final choice...?
Edit 1: scratch that :((( They were in the portraits folder, not the Characters folder... I'm still puzzled about why they're there though (ie. not deleted once 'rejected')

I'm also seeing an odd change in light/shadows. However, it may have made things better-looking in my case.
Link to side-by-side comparison. Both were captured by screenshot of the login page.
I'm a bit torn by that change. I liked the ruddy look of the original (looking like he's got a cold or somethin'), but the new render gave him a bit more 'realistic' age (and 'fixed' the outer tunic).

Okay, forget waiting 24hrs it seems that your render server is up and running at full speed...
I checked the results for my character, and it was slightly surprising.
The small 256-pixel images are identical in every way, but the 512-pixel images aren't.
The strange thing (for me) is that your Server Version is identical to both of my 256-pixel images - it's the 512-pixel image from my own computer that's different from all the rest - the jaw position is slightly lower, and the eyes are more open, also, there seems to be a different tone of hair colour on my main - but only by a fraction.
Looking at both of my 512-pixel shots side-by-side, it's hard to tell the difference, but overlaying them and flicking back and forth makes it obvious.

My character looked fine (Save for some lighting) when I was on the character selection screen. When I selected my character and logged in with her, the server shaved her long hair into well... shaved hair.
Seems my characters are suffering from server-induced hair loss - they lose their hair when I log in with a character and its permanent.

3 toons for you, quite a difference. They look amazing rendered on server, although not much like I created, which I can see being a problem for some folks. I am running all settings on low on my computer.

Originally by: CCP Lopi To reduce the (bandwidth?) load on both the Eve Clients & TQ, we have moved the rendering of character portraits to be performed server side. Any new character potraits that you have created on SISI (using the new character creator) will be ported over to the new ImageServer and re-rendered to maximum quality (maxed anti alias, etc.)
The new rendering will be completed within 24hrs and your old character potrait will be replaced automatically by the image from the ImageServer.
What Do You Need To Do :
Check for differences between your local rendered version and the server rendered version. You may post a before and after link.
How To Force An Image Update :
After you create your character initially in the character creator we store a temporary portrait to use in the client until the server rendered version is ready. You can find these temporary images in:
Windows 7/XP:
%UserProfile%\AppData\Local\CCP\EVE\ôYour Singularity cache Pathö\cache\Pictures\Characters
or
%UserProfile%\Local Settings\Application Data\"CCP\EVE\Your Singularity cache Path"\cache\Pictures\Characters
Mac:
<insert a Mac path>
Fixed for clarity (easy for the average layman to understand)
As for my feedback, there's a massive difference as local rendering is done (on at 7300GT) with character settings low quality and high texture. Grapgics setting are all low/none except medium setting for lod and texture.

I checked this out with two characters and everything looked pretty much identical, but I am able to run the client on max settings. It looks like the character creator works pretty well for those with high-end machines, but doesn't degrade gracefully for those who can't run the client maxed out.

Yes, due to my low-performing computer, i use low shaders. When i create my character, i don't see the lights and shadows. Colors are apparently affected too.

So quick question.... what will make the Character Generator (the new one) smoothly? as in what type of computer will make it NOT choppy with graphics. Not looking for anything specific just looking for a ball park so I know what I should look forward to upgrading and or what not. You can create with low shader and settings (good fps on old computer/graphicCard):
For The third image, the shader and textures are on high (crappy fps but just the time to save a portrait). Now, i'm waiting for the server rendered version.

Apart from the color changes (clothes, eyebrows, makeup), the shape of the eyes appear to have changed. This might have something to do with the makeup color change in the eyes-area tho (not sure).
