Im wondering how many people it take to make mining profitable. I just want to know how many characters it would take in hulks and orcas to make mining profitable in say null sec. If we threw in a rorqual aswell so all the orcas will be doing is hauling, and say also one character who was shooting down the rats. This would be refining and then processing the minerals into items to be sold off. So if anyone would be able to say how many characters it would take to actually make it profitable.

Mining is profitable when you have one or more pilots mining.
Add an Orca or Rorqual after your second miner, and the mining becomes more profitable. Of course, you will ensure the Orca or Rorqual is piloted by a mining director with the Mining Foreman Mindlink implant and the mining warfare links.
Mining income is based on two figures - one is "cubic metres of ore per hour", the other is "ISK per cubic metre of ore being mined". Multiply the two together and that gives you the ISK/hr of the mining operation. Profitability is determined by comparing that ISK/hr to what you could have been earning if all those miners had been doing some other activity instead.

Well, in null sec the max amount of iskies/h you can hope to make is approx 30mil/h mining ark and 100% refinning (which is not that common in 0.0). Thats the absolute max though, so 10-20 mil/h is a bit more reasonable.
Mining with one char is almost not worth it, since you make the same amount of cash doing lvl4's in empire, but once you get a second char things change for the better, after all its not practical to do 2 lvl4s simultaneously.
So to answer your question is: 2 or more.

Edited by: News Group on 21/12/2010 15:01:13 Edited by: News Group on 21/12/2010 14:56:33 I mine with an Orca (perfect buff) and two Hulks (T2 crystals, Exhumers V, etc.) and make slightly more than I make on lvl 4s. I have not factored in loot/salvage which I often do, I don't want to do the maths for the loot/salvage time. Also, mining is more AFK friendly which suits my play style. This is in high sec.

Your wrong me ol china, Its about 2-3 with good skills, plsu like the guy above said it can be done while going afk alot, unlike you in your raven in level fours ;p I personally went the way of the mission runner as i get LP and standing from that as well, the only thing i got extra from mining was a few can flippers km.

It's all about isk per hour. "I can make more on level 4's" doesn't mean a whole lot until you can give it an isk per hour for comparison. Mining in a bantam is profitable..the right comparison is can I make more doing something else in the same time period?
With orca boost at level 4 and warlink 4, with mining gang implant in a single hulk at exhumers 3 with t2 crystals and perfect refine, I can get 15 mil an hour in high sec. Now a further factor here is that I can largely afk or a lot less effort than soon missions.

Agreed, mining with no pilots mining is reasonably unprofitable.

I found a wormhole this morning, leading from my low sec home to some unknown class of W-space. It had Arkonor rocks in it.
I sent in a plain t1 Covetor, fitted with t1 strippers. Cargo expanded to hit about 9,800 m3. I filled up the cargo hold in about 3.6 cycles - 11 minutes. Say 15 minutes including the jumps to and from the holes and my station. Each Arkonor rock was good for about 50k-100k m3 worth of ore... That's a lot.
Estimated profit from such a humble operation... 10-15 mil / hour or so. All in all, could be far worse. Guess it's not up to L4 mission standard, at least not during "good missions". Still, pretty nice.
Nothing T2, no caps, nothing fancy, 1 man operation. Ship, rigs and all - paid for itself in less than 3 hours.
I guess with mining bonuses, on-site refining, t2 hulk, t2 modulated strippers, t2 mining crystals, higher skills, and team work... Hitting 20-30 million / hour and participant should be doable for sure.
Personally though, I consider my 1-man operation to be both profitable and worthwhile.
