I've had several frustrating experiences when I couldn't find a pile of ammo, blueprint, etc. because I'd left it in a ship's cargo on accident.
Is there a way to make the assets tab also search my ship's cargo? Is there some easy way to search the contents of a ship remotely? I know I can view the contents, but this shows me the ship's full fitting as well as any cargo it holds and doesn't appear to be search-able.

Short answer - No
Long answer:
Unfortunately the Jovian bloke who invented pods was on holiday when concord invented the Inter Planatery Inventory Search System (IP1SS). They tried to find the Amarrian lass who invented eve wide instant communication but she apparently had a busy schedule castrating choir boys, or whatever it is Amarrian women get up to in their spare time.
For this reason IP1SS was invented by a Brutor called Bob, he made such a mess of it that we have only just been able to remotly view the contents of our ships, being able to use the search function too is still but a distant dream.

So, the only solution is to be very careful to empty the cargo hold of every ship, every time I use it? Drat.
I guess I am doomed to lose BPOs in nondescript shuttle cargo holds for months, then.

There is no in-game way to search, but you can use applications like EveHQ or jEveAssets which use the Eve API to retrieve a list of your assets from the API.

Ahah! That makes sense. Thanks! I knew there had to be a way.

Coming to the conversation too late, I know, but expanding on Chribba's comment I've been using iClone on my iOS device quite happily to search for assets. Sadly I can't see the difference between blueprint originals and copies, but that's just the way the cookie crumbles isn't it :)
