Pardon if this is a simplistic question. I'm a solo mission runner with a busy RL and I am just discovering the wealth of information on the boards.
I've been running LVL 4's for quite some time and I am somewhat lazy about cleaning up the plethora of items that are steadily accumulating at my mission stations. Now that we have the Noctis I am hauling so much crap cargo back to the station that I am getting overwhelmed by junk modules. When I open my cargo hold it takes like 5 minutes to load (exaggeration but you get the idea) and I am up to my ears in stacks of 10MN afterburners and generic shield boosters.
So I need to melt all of this stuff. My question to my fellow mission runners is how do I get the best return for melting them? Do most people just melt at whatever station they happen to be in or is it worthwhile to find the best station in the area and haul all of these crap modules over to it for reprocessing?
I know that corp standing and the facilities at a particular station all play a part in refining efficiency but Im not sure if the difference is worth fretting over.
Am I correct in assuming that anything meta 1-3 is junk?
Thank you in advance

Edited by: Tarasina on 22/12/2010 18:34:07 Meta 3s are sometimes worth cash, especially if it is cruisersized (thanks to PVP). Even meta 1 or 2s sometimes, Malkuth heavy missile lanchers for example.
Reprocess at a station where you have high standings. If you have a crapload of modules, that 5% or whatever it is could be worth it. The percentage mentioned is probably way off, too lazy to check or care.

The magic number for perfect refining, in terms of standing, is 6.67. Thus, if you have 6.67 standing or better at the station you've got your stuff dumped in, there is no reason to seek a better station.
For skills, you need a combination of refining, refining efficiency, and scrapmetal processing to get a perfect refine on modules. I *think* that for NPC stations, you need 5/5/1, but I am not positive. You need 5/5 as a prereq to scrapmetal anyhow (and metallurgy 5 as well). I believe 5/5/3 is overboard for NPC stations, so it's somewhere in that range.

IIRC the reprocessing screen will show you the % cuts the different things are taking, and therefore where you'd benefit from skills. You could view it for a small stack of items where your stash is atm, and a better standing station that you're considering hauling to. |

tip: I've actually created courier contracts for my loot to be hauled elsewhere and made the collateral 2x and couriers still fail to deliver thus giving me a nice boatload of cash. It's less work than trying to sort out which items needed reprocessing, which to sell, and which to keep. -----------------

Thanks for the info!
I'm kind of relieved that I was on the right track. It sounds like I can melt everything at my mission stations since I have a high rep with them.
Man...it's going to take awhile to sort through all of this junk.

Set your hangar to list view (in the toolbar, third icon from the left).
Right-click the column names, select "show meta lvl"
Sort by meta lvl, ascending. Now just pay attention, you don't want to go refining all your ammo and T1 drones :)

Indeed!
Thank god for the long awaited sort by meta lvl. No more "scrap it all" or sorting that took for hours to sort them all by hand picking every item into containers for melting & resale.
As for the skills Scrap metal processing & high standing with the corp in question isn't mandatory but its nice to have 0.0 on every wastage bracket. And by the way T1 drones aren't worth saving, it only takes a week or two at most to get T2 med & light drones.

IF you dont count too heavily into time==money,
Most of the time reprocessing isn't worth it, thanks to the tank in mineral prices. I use eve-refinery to give me the refine value of all my stuff, then just run through it seeing if its Repro/sell/sellorder. Usually takes about an hour to get through 9000m^3 of stuff. Everyone else had a sig and i felt lonly :( |

Edited by: Mibad on 23/12/2010 08:40:49 Reprocess everything meta 0,1,2 excluding things like 800-1600mm plates and large turrets/launchers. There is a few gems meta 0-3 like these, but it really depends on your refining skills. Check out EVE Refinery or other similar market apps, they will show you what meta 0-3 items you want to keep and what you want to salvage.
If you have perfect refining you can reprocess everything meta 0-3 pretty much.
Thats the best method to make the most money with least amount of time invested. If you want to be a money *****, then just sell order everything and wait 10 years for people to buy it all :P

Put everything in a hauler (T1 is fine) and move it to Jita, then sell it stack by stack.
The neat thing is, the time it takes to sell the stuff doesn't increase with the amount of stuff, because there's only so many different modules and ammo types. Do it while watching some TV or listening to music, or something. Every now and then you'll sell something that goes for 100k ISK, or even more, a piece.

Edited by: Dodgy Past on 23/12/2010 15:44:36 The problem with refining it at your missions station is that you'll end up with a much larger volume to transport. I used to refine and sell the bulky stuff in Amarr as I have high standings with Theology Council, which then just needed to move it in system to sell. Then moved the rest to Jita.
These days I refine in my mission station then move in a freighter on ap to Jita once the collection is worth around 300m, then dump everything into the market. I know by sight what's worth selling whole and what might as well be refined so it takes around 15 minutes to sell it all.
I could micromanage a lot more by shipping to a character who has better refine skills in a station with a better base refine, but the reward wouldn't worth the time it takes to micromanage unless I did it with much larger quantities which would then expose my freighter to a much greater chance of being suicided.
I also probably save significant amounts of time since quite a few meta4 items end up on my own personal stockpiles to be used for PvP.

I was stock piling the loot on my main for months and found the easiest way to organize it was to micro manage it. Its a bit more work, but I ended up with about 2 billion in loot. all I did was throw everything I looted into a station container (1 million m3) twice a week in dodixie, but because of the limited number of item stacks (can never go over 1000 items) I pulled ammo, tags, implants and misc. stuff (krull DNA and elite drone AI) into other containers. Then I went through it over a peroid of a week, pulling out anything that high value like arbalest heavy launchers or the meta 4 target painters and throwing it up for sell. Still have about 150km3 (out of 750km3 which ended up mostly being scrap metal and 400/800 cap boosters ) left which isn't really valueable and haven't reprocessed it yet as I don't have any character with great refining skills. I would estimate from pre-tyranis if they hadn't done the loot nerf I would of had at least 2 million m3 or more of loot when I sold off the loot a month a go and relize I really miss those meta 0 BS AB/MWD/Gun or 1600mm plat loot pinatas , remember selling off 100+ of those and their individual stacks were HUGE! in the general freight containers.

Get the Scrapmetal Reprocessing skill (AFAIK you only need it to 1 to get 0 wastage in High Sec NPC stations); melt down everything Meta 0,1,2 (except stuff that can be converted to Faction Gear via LP's, like ammo), keep the Meta 3 and 4 stuff. Haul the minerals and Meta 3,4 stuff to your nearest market hub, sell all using sell orders. The loot you convert to Faction stuff via LP's (ammo) sell in busy Lvl3/Lvl4 mission hubs.
Now I've got an alt (CS Lvl5 and nearly perfect Boosting skills) that also has perfect refining/manufacturing skills so they look after the refiing and building of Meta 0 items that my main uses to convert via LP's to Faction items (alt has necessary BPO's), another alt sits in the local trade hub and looks after all the sell orders.

Not to derail the thread, but I love to see other people do similar things that I do. I just dumped all the free SP my alt got back from learning skills into leadership skills, it's pretty nice. He also doubles as my recycler in stations. Solomunio is correct in that if you have the skills up to get scrapmetal reprocessing to at least 1, you will have 0 wastage in normal stations, regardless of standing (standing mainly helps reduce the amount of minerals that they take AFAIK).
Good luck!
