Way back in like 2007 or somewhere around there when I first started playing eve I went out to mine in my little frigate and I saw these little spider like creatures hopping around on the asteroids. Occasionally they would even hop on my ship before moving on. They were very small, much smaller than a frigate. Now at the time, I remember asking people what they were in my NPC corp, and they said I was crazy. I had totally forgotten about them until today and I mentioned it to my corpmates in TS, and they said I was crazy too.
Am I crazy? I certainly haven't seen them since I returned to the game.

You're not crazy, they just werent aliens. I suspect they were mining drones, as in the old days they would actually latch onto the asteroid while mining, as opposed to orbit it like they do today. They would also occasionally get stuck on my ship, if I got between them and their target.

Old style mining drones, as the poster above has explained.

Anyone have a screenshots of these mining drones in action? Google fails me. I clearly remember what they looked like, and I'm getting a lot of crap on ts right now :P

Sounds like an awesome way of doing mining drones...
Why were they changed?

No you're not crazy, old style mining drones were a little different than what we have today. They were animated as well; a travel to roid state and a latched onto roid mining state. Before the drone overhaul, you were able to control up to 15 drones and when you entered a really busy belt with a ton of mining drones, a lot of the time you would see that glitch; mining drones attached to one's ship.
SO, tell your corpmates on TS that they are stupid newbies that don't know any better!

Why were they changed?
Well they got stuck to a lot of stuff as the OP mentioned.
I would venture that is the reason they changed the grapplers to beams.

I think CCP will eventually introduce aliens; they've got to, if their aim is as stated, to make the world's first true all-in s-f simulator.
But if and when they do, it will be the biggest surprise, the biggest and scariest shock ever. (And of course the aliens will have to be really good - they can't just be the zillionth Giger ripoff or plastic forehead job, they will have to be absolutely classic s-f alien aliens, really weird, really uncanny.)
I think that's the whole point of the way they've been building up to have a "human only" universe in EVE. It means that the in-game psychology for years and years has built up solidly around a "human-only" feeling, so the shock, when it comes, will have tremendous psychological impact to those who are thoroughly immersed in that "human only" feeling.
It will be absolutely fantastic. *****

It will be a long way off when they introduce new space.
I think that is why the introduced the Sleepers, to make thing more newish. I wish they did more with that story line. I assume the original premise was to have them invade K Space instead of the Sansha. I don't know why they would have changed it, I would assume because of the lack of storyline options though.
Like how they changed the bad guys in Deep Space 9 to the Dominion instead of the Borg because they thought the Borg would be to plain without much story or character interaction. Cold Killing Machines do not always make the most interesting villains because you can only go so far with there motives and your interaction with them.
Sansha meets that profile but they still are more human then Machine. Makes them the perfect bad guy, you can understand but it is hard to sympathize.

Mined 1 CU of Tritium from asteroid 2.
What is Tritium? Some predecessor to Veldspar? -------- Enemy corps raided into disbandment: Three.

No but we should get some critters living in them... If only to add space hippies which violently protest the destruction of their natural habitat.
In which case we then get to blast or mine over the hippies that tie themselves to the roids.

Er the weird alien/drone things that used to live in rocks were not mining drones, nor had anything to do with them. They were just weird alien/drone (i assume rogue drone) things that had burrowed through barren asteroids in missions etc. They were not in belts. I don't remember them ever hopping on ships and they didn't look anything like the drones in the pics.
