i figured this would be the best place to post this, as i dont see a place to properly petition this...
as we all know there are alot of names used in the eve universe, however the most sought after names like darth vader, honor harringston and the like are already taken and usually by some alt on a trail account that has been inactive for years.
i think there needs to be a policy that if the account is inactive for an certain amount of time (say 2 years) that it looses its name privilege, especially on trial accounts this should be shorter (6 months) as it deprives paying players from using names.
what say you? |

The point is that there are names unavailable due to the fact that someone locked em down in an active, NON-paying account, and i want those name sto be set free, i actually have other names i want to use and they are also taken up (still seeing darth vader in a pvp fight would be sweet)

Guess what? CCP wants those people to come back and pay money. The best way to do that is NOT to delete their characters and all their stuff, but instead, to keep them in the database and send them e-mails occasionally offering them a deal if they re-subscribe. CCP has never deleted idle characters, and they probably never will.
Somehow games like WOW have millions of customers, and they allow multiple characters per subscription, and all those people still come up with character names. EVE has, what, 300,000 characters? There are some good names out there, I assure you.

well guess what, those names are as good as dead as they will not be activated, most of them were created on accounts that will never see the light of day and it's true
your argument holds value to trained accounts, but inactive tral accounts that wilnever ba activated again then, taht's another story
i know a person that claims to creates accounts with names then never uses them or ever trains on that account
that's just crap

So ... let me get this straight ... you want to erase thousands of accounts ... just to free up a few names you happen to think are cool? Is that what you're saying?
First off ... let me point out to you - that if you name your character Darth Vader - no one else is going to think you are cool because of that. Mostly - they are going to think you're an immature idiot - and - will grief you constantly because of it ... if they don't just laugh at you and go away. You will NEVER be taken seriously.
It's like some big fat kid at a convention - wearing a really cool t-shirt. He doesn't get to borrow coolness from his t-shirt. He's just a big fat kid - in a cool shirt.
People like the idea that they can always come back - and you see threads in this forum ALL the time about people who are returning veterans and want to know what's changed - or - how something works that they know has changed.
And you want to tell all these people - that you are canceling their accounts - just so you can name your character Darth Vader?
...
Or are you just a troll?

May I introduce the imagination-challenged people of the world to the Fantasy Name Generator. This tool has been helping unimaginative people like yourself come up with original (and more importantly cool sounding) names for years.
As for names like "Darth Vader", "Honor Harrington" or "Bellatrix Lestrange", I'd expect that someone at CCP has the job of reserving those names in order to avoid copyright lawsuits from the owners of those names. I'll take this moment to point out that the estate of J.R.R. Tolkien and the corporate lawyers of Lucasarts are extremely aggressive when it comes to protecting names that they "own".

They haven't contacted me yet (been using this name for 10 years now). Never was unable to choose this name either (except when another player took it before I did).

what say you?
I say nay.
For all of the above mentioned reasons and that a name in EVE has meaning. Who are you to say people should not be allowed to take a long break then come back and suddenly find out that their 'awesome' name like for example: 'Backdoor Bandit' has been given away to someone else, just because they took a break for a while. I mean, I would cry real hard if that would happen since rearportal bandit doesn't has the same 'ring' to it as backdoor has.

My guess is that most of those names are already blocked, as various trademark owners like to whine to great lengths about such things. Any name that CAN be created is likely at constant risk of being forcibly renamed by CCP, as trademark owners contact them regarding blocking the names in the future. For these reasons alone, it's in your best interest to avoid using names of existing characters from movies, games, books, etc.
If any "Darth Vader" that is actually allowed on eve, and taken by a placeholder char, I'm sure CCP would like to keep it that way rather than release it to the general populace. As long as it's stolen by a placeholder and not really in use - it's not much a legal problem for them, and should it become a legal problem there will be far less whining about the forced renaming that this will result in.
Finally I'd like to join just about everybody else in saying "Don't try to rip off an existing char." It's horribly poor imagination, it's 100% un-original, and there's no player in the world that could even remotely do justice the the original character in the first place. It will just make you look silly. Besides... Harrison Ford, Darth Vader or Frodo Baggins - they all have one thing in common: wrong universe.

Maybe only get rid of characters like that, while keeping ones with some actual history to them?

I have a few character in initial corp with neutral standing to everyone and 0.0 security status that I use frequently. Im pretty sure there is several other characters in the same situation. But that is beyond the point, the important part its that I give then nice names and dont want to lose it if I need to have a long break, like a year or so, again.

And no agent standing other than the initial tutorial agent? No recent market transactions? No skill training?
Then what exactly do you use that character for? But even then, you could keep that character on an active acount and not have to worry about it. Or even if you insisted on keeping them on inactive accounts you could go shoot at rats for a half hour and get 0.01, or something. Several things you could do to flag them in such a way that they would be ignored by the auto filter picker thing.
The slight inconvenience this would cause you is less than the inconvenience of having all those inactive and never were active characters sitting around, not only taking up names, but also cluttering up the database.
People against this sort of thing are just against change for the sake of it. There is no negative and nothing but positives for clearing up a bunch of ancient trial accounts that have been sitting around for years.

Just use a little creativity doesn't take much this name dates back to my old AD&D days came from the rather imaginative method a friend suggested of picking a name from a TV guide and spelling it backwards. Skex Relbore was originally roller sex which I guess would have actually been Skes Rellor but a couple typos due to my chicken scratch handwriting and a minor tweak and there you go.
I've got an alt named Hance Loner, I wasn't feeling particularly creative that night but I haven't had anyone actually figure out (or at least articulate) the rather blatant rip off there.
The English language is rather amazing in it's abundance of synnonyms antonyms homonyms homophones and various word play to work with. Many if not most sounds can be crafted using different letter combinations. Add in the fact that you aren't limited to English and all the horizon opens up even further.
So yeah you can't have Luke Skywalker but you could have Lucas Skystrider or if you were well versed in Star Wars history you could probably get away with Luke Starkiller (did you know that Han Solo was originally supposed to be a green lizard alien?).
You can also always go a bit further afield and find some names less commonly known I've seen plenty of Joshua Calvert's (various variations) running about. Of course if you want the slightest amount of respect from people you should probably look outside of the mainstream for idea's to rip off. A variation on a Star Wars or Star Trek character in a sci-fi MMO is just as lame as all the various Arthegorn's and legolas's running around in Fantasy MMOs (yeah I know my alts name is lame). Hell it wouldn't surprise me if many of the characters with those names you covet weren't retired to avoid the ridicule.

Horse Manure.
You don't know what other people are doing with these old accounts - or if they'll ever come back.
You also don't know under which circumstances one account will be deleted and another preserved.
You are also NOT the person who will be making those decisions.
You also do not know to what extent these accounts are having an effect on the efficiency of the data CCP uses.
So ... since you don't work for CCP ... you have no idea what you're talking about - now do you?
If it does become a problem - CCP will do something about it but until then - the opinions of ignorant users don't really matter.
And ... ummm ... speaking of CCP ... why the hell hasn't this thread been moved to one of the whiner forums anyway?

WoW has got millions of customers spread over millions of servers. There can be a Legolas on every server in the entire game. In Eve Online there is only one server so there is also only one character per name.
EDIT: And about removing names from old characters... I reactivated this one after three years or so inactive. I could care less if my name was taken when I got back. Really, if I haven't been bothered logging in for three years I obviously didn't care very much about this character. The problem is when you take someone elses name and that name has got friends etc. Could cause some confusion.

The wow / eve analogy doesn't really stand on it's own two feet though. In a game like WoW, you can't have two names. Well, eve fully supports having both a first and a last name, which means that yes, we can actually have millions of Legolases on this one server, simply by picking a unique surname. Not exactly brain surgery.
It's a rare few cases when you actually can't get a name you are happy with, simply by picking a first or last name to make it unique. The problem with names being "all taken" only really appears when you a) try to use a famous name like "Uma Thurman" which probably isn't a good idea in the first place or b) insist on not having a last name and become frustrated because someone else already named himself "Robert" or "MasterBlaster".
