Yes, I realize that xbox and PS3 both have an achievement system in place and that the idea is completely stolen however, I think it would enhance eve online because it would reward and give goals to players to achieve.
The most obvious rewards should be based on tenure, 1 year, 5 year and 10 year rewards. Something as simple as an item like a watch or trophy , which can be displayed like certificates.
The item would have no value, could not be traded and would simply be a visual display for bragging rights, maybe next to your mug shot. In the army generals have ranks and insignias and I think this is missing from eve and should be added.
Again corp medals are nice but not unique because anyone can make one, it's not something that needs to be earned and can be made easily, but a system which gives achievemnts to those that truly earned them would be much more appealing.
The only achievement right now that we have in game is the WANTED sign, which looks bad ass but again is only a small fraction of what the achievement system would provide.

Eve is a player driven game, not a dev driven game like CoD or one of the other XBox games. You decide what our goals are, and therefore you decide what you achieve. All an achievement system would do is make the game feel like it has a definitive end. Why play once you have all the achievements?
That's the last thing Eve needs. --Vel

+1
What's wrong with Corp Medals? What gives the Devs the right to decide what we should aim for, when we're paying them to maintain a *SandBox*?
If you want 1,5,10 year medals, Make them yourself. They display next to your bio, on the Awards page.

If they're only aesthetic, sure, why not? People that don't like them can ignore them; people that do will have another reason to play. And to some extent we already have them in the form of certificates.
Could be interesting to have achievements for getting high standing with different factions, and unlock different skins for various hulls, or perhaps different ship models entirely. (e.g., player with 2 yrs of tenure and x number of appearances on killmails in a scorpion = can use the old scorpion model)
BTW, with tenure rewards, they should be reset on character transfer.

In this way I would like more certificates. E.g. certs that fit a mothership, certs that tell you which skills are useful for a jump freighter. Not that anyone flying them shouldn't know that by themselves, but it could separate the mundane pilot from the elite. ---

No!
Why? Because we already have killboards as an e-peen meter, and even they stink. But at least killboards are sort of manly..
That aside, achievements are pretty much meant for content-driven games, which Eve is not. All they would do is reveal Eve's lack of content, and look ridiculous, and attract the braindead achievement-hunter crowd from other games *shudders*.

We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in Metropolis, we shall fight in nullsec and lowsec, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the wormholes, we shall defend our Eve, whatever the cost may be, we shall gank them in Motsu, we shall gank them in Amarr, we shall gank them in Hek and in Rens, we shall gank them in Jita; we shall never surrender!

Considering it's still a few years before anyone has every cert in game I don't think we will need any new achievements anytime soon. Sure capital certificates would be fun but only from an e-peen point of view.

NO.
Also you say an obvious reward would be 1,5,10 years but where are the 1 year 31 day medals? A number you find easy to say/count to/whatever should not be more of an achievement than any random number.
