Just want to put it out there people - PLEX for Queensland. We are taking massive hits here and Brisbane (state capital) is facing some of the worst flooding it has ever seen - the next 48 hours will potentially see hundres displaced and many houses under.
The area that is under water in the state is equivilant to France AND Germany combined. For those in the US, Queensland in over twice the size of Texas.
So how about it CCP - Plex for Queensland???

I would like to state to everyone, the current situation is not a pretty sight.
Towoomba was where it started. A massive inland Tsunami had decimated the town. The water has since subsided from Towoomba but has since moved onwards. Now where Towoomba is located, it is on the Great Dividing range meaning it is on the top of a set of mountains. For the water to escape Towoomba, it needed to go down the mountain. Well, it did. It has gone so far that it has hit Brisbane itself. The distance between Towoomba and Brisbane is roughly 200km and considering it made it that far in just a day, the water is moving in at great speed.
It is estimated that at midnight tonight (14:00 eve time), the suburb of Ipswich, located on Brisbanes south-west edges, will be at 19 metres below the water. That is 62 feet underwater. That water is currently heading through brisbane suburbs and it is known that it will submerge thousands of homes.
What us Australians are asking for is to show the compasion towards us that we have all shown towards Haiti, the Tsunami victims in Indonesia and so forth. So what do you say? PLEX for Queensland Australia?

You live in a rich country that can afford to look after you. Haiti was a disater before the earhquake even happened. The two cannot ever be compared. Its people like you who are going to stop CCP from running these great drives for aid.

We're not as rich as people think. We are in a deficit due to the current economy crisis world-wide. We have been trying to get out of the situation and then this happens. I take it your American? Why is it when New Orleans flooded, the US called for support both in manpower and financial? Thought the US was rich too? Does this mean that because we're not a "3rd world country" that we cannot ask for assistance from our fellow man to help feed our families? I noticed Xander Baligo is hosting a PLES aid for Queensland petition. Maybe show some compasion like we do and actually help instead of claiming we're rich.

Britsh. My country is also in heavy debt with cuts having to be made everywhere. Compared to Haiti you are a very rich country. Most people will have insurance and your government more than likely already has a plan in action to provide aid and compensation. Like for the victims of the firestorms.
What is happening is **** and you do hve my simpathy but you are far far better off than many other people.

I am not sure about New Orleans, but i believe there they also werent that keen on outside help. For sure during the oil spill in the gulf of mexico they rather played with fishing ships than accepting outside help in the form of dedicated ships and equipment for oil removal (where the offers of equipment were free of charge, still they refused for a long time). Read and cry: Linkage
Plex for queensland is not needed imo, obviously governments should offer help to the australians, every country will have people trained for these situations, might as well send some to help each other out.

This is exactly right. These kind of donation drives should be limited to those countries/regions that don't have the economic means to deal with it themselves.
Australia/North America/Japan/Europe don't belong to that category. They may be in need of technical assistance, but not simple financial aid.
On the other hand, Pakistan/Haiti and other (financially) poorer countries are not capable of supporting the victims themselves, and thus should get international financial aid.
I never understand why people have such a problem with this. It is not about politics, but simply helping those who need it the most (which, by definition, can't be everyone). Surely any Christian/Muslim/Atheist/other would support such a simple aim?

Edited by: Captain Eflame on 11/01/2011 11:13:52 Edited by: Captain Eflame on 11/01/2011 11:12:19 I'm in Brisbane, a majority of roads and areas around my suburb are flooded, I am cut off from friends, shops are empty of food and I (along with thousands of others) will probably have a rest-less night thinking about people I know as well as the thousands I don't. However, I would have to agree that we really don't need cash in the form of PLEX. To have such a cause for a comparitively well off country like Australia would be an insult to the millions around the world who, despite our situation, still have it alot worse than us. Spare us a Thought, Prayer, Ritualistic Sacrific, etc. but that is all.
If you feel the need to donate money to someone think of the people who are still recovering from the Tsunami, those in Haiti as well as others who have been affected by natural disasters in the last 5 years. Recovery doesn't happen over night and money is still needed in those locations long after the camera's have gone.

Edited by: Professor Tarantula on 11/01/2011 11:35:41 Governments aren't prepared for this kind of destruction, and people who don't have shorefront property rarely get flood insurance. That is, if the insurance companies even decide to honor flood insurance when thousands of claims roll in at the same time. They've gotten away with denying claims like that before.
Many countries were trying to help New Orleans when it was hit, but all of it was refused, and the US government insisted on doing a half assed job themselves.
All that aside, like i've said before, these disasters are only becoming more and more common, and we might want to instead start using any extra cash to prepare for our turn.
Liveleak has some clips of what's going on, for those interested.
My Warmest Regards. Prof. Tarantula, Esq. |

Unfortunately you have too many White people in Australia and not enough Blacks. So you will not be eligible for much financial aid or other assistance.

Will be in Perth soon and touring around, do you think I need to get some wellingtons?
Lots of countries are struggling financially and there certainly seems to be an increase in natural disasters of late. The outcome for the time being looks bleak.

Perth is one of the few areas of Australia that WANTS water - they currently have some bush fires going that are deliberately lit.
To all the people saying Queensland doesn't need assistance - you are wrong. The damage bill will be in the billions. Many of the crops and minerals (e.g. coking coal (used in steal manufacturing)) will not be available as they have been ruined/are under water/have no way to transport them. 75% of the state has been declared disaster areas. The size of the area as I previously stated is greater that France and Germany and you can chuck in any number of the small countries around there.
Supermarket shelves are empty. Many people who do have flood cover may not find it covers this kind of flooding (many are only covered for flash flooding, not overland).

I have some sympathy about this request, sure Australia may be a far richer country than Haiti and Pakistan but there will many people affected by these floods that live in poverty that have lost everything they own and will receive little government help and could be homeless for years the way many from New Orleans still are.
A modest donation from CCP via PLEX could help those people out, maybe get them some clothes and other things a little compassion goes a long way.

Is it an act of god or global warming cause by the human race?
Can't answer that question myself, but it does not necessarily have to be an act of god.

Sadly the problem in Perth is bushfires. You'll need to pack that asbestos suit that you normally reserve for forum trolling :)
For those interested in the details of the flooding in Queensland, it's worth noting that the Wivenhoe Dam was finished in 1985, and was designed to provide drinking water and double as a flood mitigation dam. Thus it's "100% capacity" level is less than half the total holding capacity. The flood mitigation "compartment" of the dam is the several metres of dam wall above the maximum drinking water storage level.
In the meantime, those of us with relatives in Brisbane will be sleeping soundly knowing that our loved ones are relatively safe, since they'll be staying with friends in the higher suburbs, away from the maximum predicted flood levels.
