Nice.
I'm still bummed out that my best work is my cyno alt.
Oh well, I'll have another go when we can redo our portraits.

Zoom hint: I noticed that when you zoom out one step and then back in, the zoom result varies a bit from the original state. With multiple zooms and back I was able to have my face exactly the size I wanted to have it.

Don't rush! If there's anything that looks wrong it probably is, so keep looking until you know what the cause is.
Before actually creating, it's a good idea to walk away make a drink and then see what you think when you get back. Especially if you've been working on it for awhile.

I personally find It very hard to work with bald characters (They always turn out as some badass Army type) so I apply some generic not too obstructive hairstyle and work on the face till I'm satisfied.
Have 2 Chars so far, but I will make minor adjustments once we are allowed to. Alt Pic

Sophia Amelia Stone One of the best pics I seen so far, the way you rotated to make that background actually look like less "back" and more "ground" is genius.

The only thing that bothers me with these kind of portraits is the intention (at least that's what it 'says to me') to get the boobs into the portrait and have them 'show off'.

Women do have boobs you know. You are right to a point, the intention is to show off the female form and create a pleasing image. Which is why a light background was used (only 1 to choose from limits this somewhat). Boob size can make or break an image, too big tends to ruin it (ruins the line, a bit like sports cars) as with this image the idea is to show the lines of the body not to make the boobs the sole focal point. You don't need to show flesh to make a sexy image. Head looking forward and not looking at the camera and correct posture gives her a look that she is in control.

It's possible to do a smooth zoom not constrained by the notches on your mouse wheel by holding down both the right and the left mouse button and dragging up and down, just like the in-game camera. Unfortunately you move the camera left-right at the same time, so it's easy to screw up a finely placed camera position this way.
Edit: apparantly I failed at quoting properly

[WTB] vertical extended avatar portraits then.. maybe half the width for twice the height? Would give options for some nice shots.
As for your intentions *hehe* - seems I hit a nerve there somewhat. I didn't meant it that personal though. The picture just looks a bit like 'boobs in favour of head' and personally I try to weight the character of a woman higher than her physical qualities.
All this meta-aspect aside the portrait is technically sound and I think one of, if not the best of all the ones I've seen sporting boobs as point of interest.
PS: I'm with ya on the bright background thing, CCP completely missed that one. So sad.

That is because you do not have boobs. Get used to it. Women have boobs. You are just being stupid. And stop arguing, this is a tips & tricks thread. --

Thanks so much for the tips! I've tried cycling through the various lighting effects and the colours, but there doesn't seem to be any difference to the light colour - are they all meant to be spotlight? I thought there'll be greenish, reddish etc lights as well. If the lights could affect the background it would be even nicer, but it seems that the backgrounds aren't affected by lighting anymore.
I find the eye's range of movement is nowhere near what we used to have in the old days, and sometimes you may be looking straight at the camera in the creator, but when you click save it's not quite there.. thankfully that is compensated by kind of better head movement.
I wish I read this thread before I did my portrait. Thankfully we should have another go soon enough!

Boobs had nothing to do with it, the rotation on the body was for the purpose to pick up on the boob line. Whereas the missing top of her head (which actually works quite well as hairstyles have a long way to go until they look real)was so that I could get more of the body lines in, otherwise it would just look like a waist up portrait. It's the limitations of the cameras angles as well as the zoom function. It's kind of like we are creating a character within a sphere.

Iff been trying some stuff, jus cant seem to get it done for some reason on my alt :( The cape thingie is there, the hood however is down on his back, and if seen 1 or 2 chars with the hood over there head.
there is a little option when you select the robes wich is at 1/3. Same box as where you selected the robe from, you can set it to 1,2 or 3 depending on wether you want the hood covering most of your face, just your head or not at all.
Ohnoes! Why why why? I was enjoying the fact that Incarna seemed to have removed all those faceless hoodies.
Do not fret, there is a bug that removes the hoods at random it seems. My amarr alt lost his hood when I logged in yesterday...

I found that going back to the facial editor after a photo shoot or two helped.
The lighting and background can make your face look very different from what it looked like in the editor.
A little age helps erase the "china doll" look and brings realism.
Gingers need freckles.
Realise that no matter what you do, your small avatar pic in chats will never look like the large one info.
Trying for vague expressions like "bemused" seems to generate finished products that look like "I've had a few too many and may fall down now." See my avatar for proof.

Also remember that you can change the lighting colour and move the direction the avatar is looking in by clicking the pupils. 2 Facts i didn't realize when i made this one, i'm debating whether to re-do him as i like the style but the snapshot could be better.

Allow yourself plenty of time before you start, I ended up not playing that game called Eve, but spent an evening creating avatars.
CCP will also now give us the option to change our picture once, so you can create your avatar, and if after a few days you don't like it, or have got ideas off other people, you can change them.
But creating the avatar is half of the process, the other half is getting the position in frame and light.

If you have glasses on and are adjusting the lighting, pay attention to the white bloomy reflections. For epic style, don't let the bloom obscure your pupils.

Lighting seems to be very important, but there doesn't appear to be any logic to the lighting settings. What do those lighting effects represent? They don't seem to move the light source in any logical direction around the model. Also what are those other 7(?) settings you can adjust each selection? Again--like so much of this creator--it was all very logical in the mind of the dev.

I've got my doubt's on the marked part. Plying around and trying EVERY setting there is is the only way to go. After a time you can guess from the pictures in the light choices what kind of shadow to expect, but for the lights themselves, try, try, try..

Whitehound, your portrait is one of the few I've seen that genuinely look good. It really does seem that lighting is the key here, and that eyebrow thing is very evident once you point it out. Makes the picture look very natural.

The 7 other settings change the light filter, seperate to the light direction. Some make it darker, or tint it with a colour. I do agree that unlike the old creator, it's less clear about where the lighting is coming from. |

Originally by: Krevnos Don't forget that some items of clothing have additional options for how they are to be worn and the option is not massively obvious (a little symbol near the clothing item's icon). Amarr cloaks are a good example where characters may be hooded.
I couldn't figure out how to use this option. Even when I went to the portrait screen I had the hood down (I wanted it down). But once I got in game I was hooded. Need to figure this out for my re-do...

they could certainly have made the lighting system more intuitive and flexible. maybe by giving us a light source to drag around the portrait area and just a few sliders for color and intensity?

Originally by: Whitehound And can I get some make-up tips from the girls, please?
* DON'T use too dark lipstick!! It makes you look like an old crow (unless that's your intention), especially if you have a pale skin! It spoils like 3 out of 10 characters I've seen thus far, if not more. * Both lighter eyebrows and darker hair or very dark eyebrows and very light hair looks very unnatural (unless that's your intention).
