Probably getting a slap on the wrist by the OP, but what the hell.. As you did go for the hood, not much about most of the face can be said. Imho: - background doesn't really match the lighting (think of reflections onto the wall behind and you will miss them) - thumbnail is recognisable for forum/chat purposes, so ok from my pov - nothing else out of the ordinary visible

This doesn't surprise me; as I completely missed the colour for the lighting doing this avatar. My only other gripe is that my smirk disappeared. Think I got done by the "Portrait you save last, not selected, will be chosen" _____________________________________ Haruhiist since December 2008

im used to looking like a demented asian man with a tatoo, i got shocked when i saw that my char wasnt asian anymore as i thought id have to be asian since ive generally seen achuras as being of asian lineage of sorts.
id like to know how u think my char looks now, i liked when we were more diverse, not everyone in one faction looking like the other or vice versa, but well, here i am

Please do not derail this thread into another "rate me plox" thread. It has nice content, let it remain so.

I really like this thread.
I would very much like the chance to do my portraits over again. Does anyone have any feedback that I could put to use? You can see where I'm going with it but it could be done a lot better I feel. I did spend a bit of time picking the background and I think this one was the best overall. Any suggestions?

In my experience:
Light perpendicular to the surface hides skin flaws (most notably the crease from nose to lip), while angular to the skin flaws amplifies them. so if you want to look younger, put the light source in front of the face, if you want to look older, make the light come somewhat from the side.
Average features are more feminine (reduce the jaw!), pronounced features (jaw, nose, eyebrows) are more masculine.
Older people have a taller face, so moving the eyes down makes the character looks younger.
Makeup: for the larger thumbnails subtlety is the key word, however mostly everyone will be looking at tiny portraits for which more makeup isn't so bad.
It wasnt really obvious to me but the direction of the eyes can be altered in portrait view.

I read you can spread the rouge across your face? How?
If I remember crrectly, there is a slider in the rouge section, where you can change the intensity. If pulled complete up, you'Re looking like fallen into the powder keg ;)

If you accent the eyes with makeup, go neutral on the lips, and vice versa...well unless you're going for a clown or stripper look.
I wish I would have read this thread before I made mine, I know nothing about photography, I had hella trouble with posing(too far away) lighting and fake looking hair...oh well, at least as a chick with 20 years experience putting on makeup, I got one thing right.

1) if you want to pull the camera out and down lower to see more of the body and less of the face, one trick is to first grab the avatars head and bend it forward/down as low as it can go. then click one of the pose buttons which puts your character into some pre-planned position. this seems to re-adjust the bounding box on the camera limits to account for the temporarily lowered head. now when you tilt your avatars head back up, the camera should be moving in a lower area and will show off the midriff more. click any pose button again to reset the camera back to its original range.
2) to make a chick with a low slung belt lower the hips all the way to make the belt go straight across, see below.
3) ...then to increase or lessen how much 'hip' or curviness there is above the beltline, grab the belly control and move it up or down, it has a great influence on how much hip is shown to the sides.
4) some womens shirts allow them to be tucked in various ways to show off a belly button or not if so desired. look for the little triangle that appears for certain clothing types to try different arrangements [same for hoods]. see below.
5) if the little triangle/option for certain cloting disappears and you know it is supposed to be there, this is a bug where it sometimes disappears i have found. one workaround is to temporarily click the randomize button ONLY for that type of clothing, not the randomize for the whole character or you lose all your careful settings. randomize on the clothing makes all the options appear again, then you can turn off whatever you didn't want and get access to the options again.
6) after several tries i decided one good way to start a new character, is to hit random-ALL over and over until something similar to what you want or like appears, then use that as a basis to start sculpting rather than starting from the vanilla pose each time. i figure that helps keep me from making the same face each time etc.
7) in the final posing area, took me a while to realize the mouth can be opened or closed. grab the chin and open or chew it around to make facial poses if desired. (seperate from the smile/sad mouth edges you can grab).
8) when snapping pictures, be like a photographer and watch your subject. he/she is breathing and blinking their eyes, and eye scanning subtley; try to catch them at their best moment, or worst if so desired, for effect.
9) irl everyones face is a little asymetrical no matter what you do about it. for more realism at least add a little bit of change to brows, corner of the mouth, angle of chin, etc and don't design perfectly symmetrical faces except to be intentionally artificial.
10) for the final photo imo off center subjects are more interesting and create greater life-energy/tension in an image, but i know some art die hards who prefer balanced centered neutral posing. while i completely disagree with it i can understand either way. go for balanced poses with your subject OR balanced poses with the negative space and shadowing to satisfy your own inner artist.

Keep in mind im not an expert but i feel like im getting the hang of it (my main has to be redone,i wish i had practised a bit first ). So far this is the best one i have made, and honestly i am very pleased about it and im going to use it to point out the things (especially point one) people can do to create the character they prefer.
First advice is to look at the eyes. The eyeballs CAN be moved around (as i was pleased to discover), In my case i wanted to make the char really "look" at you.To ensure this i tried to make sure that no matter what angle you looked at the char at,his eyes would still follow me.You might want to ask someone else to test this for you as well (in my case it was my beloved husband that put up with my nagging) since your eyes and abilety to pick up details gets lower after sitting there for an hour.
Second advice. I have seen that a lot of people avoid scarring and aging completely. Ofc on the char i linked it was purposly overdone, but just one tick of scarring and aging will make your character look more realistic and in my case, made it more comfterbale to look at.
Third. Be careful with the nose! Since there are currently no "undo" option try to sculpt your nose and ears right away so you can just exit the char creation if you feel it got completely wrong. That will save you a lot of time later on trying to fix it.
Background. In my case this is what i did...After my char was half way done i had a general idea on what he would look like, and ofc by then (again with the help of my husband :) ) made up,almost a story to go with said character. In this case? Well a complete maniac that has kept in a dark cell for a few years and is looking for revenge. Because of this i wanted a background that could "reflect" the story, what the character would feel. Thus i picked a very dark background which with the help of the light, makes him look like he is coming "out" of the shadows.
Last and final advice. I have given up on making a character smile. I tried on my main, and i tried on another alt (the other alt honestly looked like he had seen something scary). What DOES work is a...hmm what do you call...snear? half smile. In this case it looks like an evil grin, but that is because of the way the char is made..The character makes the smile i guess you can say. If you make a cute little blonde, she can have the same smile and it looks like a flirting smile as an example.So..play with the facial exspression, but like with makeup on the female avatars, don't overdo it.
Ps. Whitehound i LOVE the char! Very good job and thanks for making this thread :)

My tips:
If you are on a slower machine and your frame rate is measured in seconds per frame, turn "physically simulated hair and clothes" off, then turn shaders off. Pick a bald head while you work on the face.
I'll upload a photo later, but the rough proportions you want are:
- Eyes in the middle of the face
- Top of ears somewhere around the eyebrows/top of eye socket
- Bottom of ears level with tip of nose, about half way between middle of eyes bottom of chin
- Bottom lip about half way between tip of nose and bottom of chin
Use the Internet, search for images of people you want your character to look like. Look for full profile (side of face), 3/4 profile, frontal profile, looking from the top, looking from the bottom - the more different angles you can use the better.
As has already been said, pay attention to lighting in the photobooth. You can compensate for all manner of problems using proper lighting, light colour, and a background that matches. Most of the backgrounds suck - especially the computer-grid style ones.
Allow yourself four hours to prepare a portrait. You cannot save the portrait to come back to it later, and you cannot keep sculpting and fiddling over downtime.
I'll post with my alt shortly to show what I consider to be an adequate job. My current portrait makes me look barely competent.

Also, learn to make expressions. This is easier with a face with more lines on it, as per age, weight, scarring, etc.

I am pretty happy with mine personally. I tried to make an older version of me. I took a pic of me on one monitor and then tried to model it the same on my avatar. after all, we need to look at ourselves every day and know all our own features. Why not portray that in our avatar?
