Hi,
We're reshuffling the image dump a bit and I wanted to give you guys a heads up / get your feedback on the changes.
The biggest change is that we will now be publishing a distinct icon for every type in the game. You no longer have to do any rejigging to show an icon for a particular type, you can just link directly to [typeID]_[sz].png.
The icons will be supplied in 32x32 and 64x64 in the Types subtree and will contain metainformation in the form of an icon in the corner, so it should look the same as icons in the game. Note that we cannot supply higher-resolution icons because the drawn icons only exist in 64x64.
Rendered images will now be delivered in 512x512 instead of 32x32, 64x64, 128x128, 256x256 before and will exist in the Renders subtree. The reason for increasing the resolution on these images and only supplying one size is that you have access to the proper icons though the Types subtree and the renders will more function as a high res overview of the model, rather than the type. Still, you can of course always use this render for your type browser if you want to show higher-resolution images for the rendered types.
This will probably be rolled out in the next couple of weeks through the image dump. Furthermore, in the next few months we are planning to have these type icons available through the image server as well so your website can just use image.eveonline.com/Type/638_64.png to show off that shiny new Raven.

Great news there!
Although I just finished coding in EVEMon the addition of the overlaying icon in Types icons (have to revert all changes now), EVEMon will benefit greatly from the image server service.
Well done there CCP (was about time, if you ask me).

Does this mean that the 16x16 icons are going away? Those are actually useful for listview controls (think Windows Explorer in small icons, list, or details view) and treeview controls (think the left pane of Windows Explorer, where folders and drives and such appear), which expect small icons (example).
Simpler typeID to icon file name mapping is good, and higher resolutions are good, but I'd like to request that you keep the 16x16 icons.

Yes, they will still be a part of the image dump as iconxx_yy.png

While it would certainly make things easier, have you thought about the implications of 2 icons sizes for each and every module?
For just modules (invTypes in category 7), regardless of published status, my count using the latest data dump:
120 distinct base icon files for modules, in 16px, 32px and 64px sizes, for
120 files * 3 sizes = 360 files
Now, compare that to if each module has it's own icon file in 16px, 32x and 64px sizes:
4036 files * 3 sizes = 12,108 files
Quite a bit of difference, considering the amount of redundancy (multiple typeIDs pointing to what is essentially the same icon).
And I won't even start on the disk space ramifications of the image dump of adding that many files (yet).
If there is a render of each module icon with the existing tabs (base, T2, T3, stortyline, faction, deadspace, officer) there's substantially less files to deal with:
120 base icons * 7 variants * 3 sizes = 2520 files
Not quite as bad.

This new imagedump format is both a potentially good thing and a potentially bad thing, depending on how you look at it and depending on how it's implemented.
On the one hand, making it simpler for people to get their images is a good thing. Also making it simpler for people to get combined images including the small corner overlays is a good thing. Currently having to combine them ourselves is a bit of work. And of course the bigger "rendered" image types is a good thing.
On the other hand... making a full image database take 3 to 5 times as much space as it needs to (with all the various duplicate identical images under different type ids) is kind of annoying and wasteful. You are already being wasteful in this respect with ships and blueprints and stuff, and doing it to every icon would make it worse, if that's your plan. And also by forcing every image to be pre-combined with the corner icons, you might make it more difficult for those of us who are resizing images into our own custom sizes... potentially even impossible, depending on exactly how you do it.
When resizing icons to sizes other than 64 and 32, we must do the corner combinations ourselves, for optimal quality. So please at a minimum make sure there is an easy way to get at the un-combined versions at least... And if possible consider reducing space by doing an indirect relationship to a non-duplicate list of icons for every table and row type (kind of like how you do currently with the graphics and icons tables, only better and easier to do and more complete)...
An example of a pretty good fan site that could severely suffer from this image change if it's not done just right is my site http://www.eveiverse.com/ because I'm using 64x64, 32x32, and even 16x16 icons for everything (including the small corner triangles)...

Not to worry, the new type icons will be completely optional. You will still have the ability to use the renders, base icons and the base overlay icons and roll your own.

What I'm hearing is that we're unclear on exactly what the new image export will contain and how it will be laid out.
Is it possible for us to get a beta export side-by-side with the current format of the export? That is, please make the Incursion 1.1.0 images available in the new format, or, if there is going to be an Incursion 1.1.2 release, release it in both the old and new formats.
This way, we can give proper feedback on what you're working on rather than on our potentially flawed understanding of what you're working on.
Thanks.

Here are the new archives.
http://content.eveonline.com/data/Incursion_1.1.0_imgs_Types.7z [49 MB] http://content.eveonline.com/data/Incursion_1.1.0_imgs_Renders.7z [109 MB] http://content.eveonline.com/data/Incursion_1.1.0_imgs_Icons.7z [15 MB]
We've split it up into three downloads so that people don't have to waste their bandwidth for something that they don't want. The Types is the new stuff where each type is mapped to an icon. Renders contains 512x512 rendered images of all models (same as before, only in higher resolution) and Icons has the icon sheets cut up same as in the old archive.
Let me know if this helps.

This does help. Here's my first take on this. To give some background, I have figured out the iconXX_YY scheme and used previous image exports without any problem, so having the direct typeID -> filename mapping isn't as big a bonus for me as it might be for some others.
Incursion_1.1.0_imgs_Types.7z contains stuff that was previously in the types directory of the old export. It has icons in 32x32 and 64x64, all in the same directory. I would suggest that you split these into two directories based on resolution, simply because having 18,974 files in a directory is less insane than having 37,948 files in a directory. For consistency, I would name the directories 32_32 and 64_64, and I would name the icons typeID.png instead of typeID_resolution.png (that is, I'd prefer types/64_64/582.png to types/582_64.png). Splitting them based on resolution also makes it easier to use images without checking their resolution (/me opens a bug report on my image import tool).
Incursion_1.1.0_imgs_Icons.7z contains corporation logos in 16x16, 32x32, 64x64, and 128x128, as well as iconXX_YY images in 16x16, 32x32, 64x64, 128x128, and 256x256. The corporation icons are still in iconXX_YY format, and they are actually the ones I'd be most interested in seeing in a more direct naming scheme, as right now I've hardcoded the NPC entityID->iconXX_YY mapping. If it were up to me, I'd name them entityID.png (ie, 1000120.png for the Federation Navy or 500004.png for the Gallente Federation), and still make them available in the same resolutions, in 256x256, and perhaps in 512x512.
For posterity's sake, I'd like to point out that alliance logos aren't in either version of the image export for Incursion 1.1.0. There is an image server that is more up-to-date. The server does have the NPC logos, too, but I would still like to have them in the export as they're static data.
Incursion_1.1.0_imgs_Renders.7z contains 512x512 renders of ships and structures and the like... mostly. There seem to be some 64x64 icons mixed in, such as the Tengu: "29984.png: PNG image data, 64 x 64, 8-bit/color RGBA, non-interlaced". I don't anticipate using the renders, and so far I haven't used anything other than the 64x64 renders in the old types directory, so take this with a grain of salt, but it seems a shame to lose the 256x256 type renders.
Ruziel pointed out the size implications. The icons set is the same size uncompressed as the 7zip file containing it (which is not surprising). The types are 159 MB uncompressed. The renders are 151 MB uncompressed. On platforms supporting it, hardlinks could address the on-disk size issue, but I don't really think it's that big a deal. Those who are concerned can do duplication detection and make their own typeID -> filename map to cut back on storage space.
Overall, this actually saves me some space, as the renders are the part that I'm not using, and now they are separate. It means a little bit of extra work to adapt my tools, but I'd call this a win.

Well I'm happy with the new format, and while I haven't entirely understood the reason for all the duplication, the new structure is basically how I always handled the old image packs, anyway (put everything in one folder). I would like to echo however that rather than add the image size in the file name these should be put into separate folders again.
The 512 px sized renders are much appreciated, however I would like to request unpublished types to be added, too (notable examples include noob ships and the capsule, but adding all of them again as in previous image exports would be appreciated). Also strategic cruisers, while added, are only 64px sized (typeIDs 29984 to 29990). --

Edited by: Soban Vuex on 14/03/2011 02:05:49 It has come to my attention that the latest Image dump for Types - Incursion_1.1.2_imgs_Type.7z is missing a decent amount of icons. As when using an automated fetcher to update your applications lack of such icons is annoying as it makes you "go after the fetcher and manualy fix things".
