Let's get a thread going here for everyone who still cannot access the Character Creation.
It appears as though CCP has put up a wall of silence on this issue since there has not been a single mention about it anywhere yet there are MANY posts scattered throughout all of the Character Creation threads from players who attempt to create their new portrait only to have the progress bar hang at 100%. This is not an isolated problem and when the grace period expires, there are going to be a lot of players who won't be able to play because of this bug. Hell, we can't even chose a random or default portrait because we can't get into the editor to do so.
If you are among those of us with this issue, please post here so that CCP can see that this is more than just a few random players with graphics issues. Also be sure to submit a petition under Other > Character Creation and Portraits or submit a Technical petition.
There have been a few players who have found work-arounds for their particular systems but most do not work on more than a few systems. If you have found some way that worked for you, please post it here so others can try it since CCP is giving us no help in this matter.
Here are a few solutions that others have posted elsewhere:
- Turn all graphics options in your Settings to low or none.
- Use the ESC key to exit the progress bar and open the Settings window. Then click on the tabs across the top until the Character Creation screen appears. (This one seems to be a bit strange and may just be a long load time.)
- Let the progress bar sit for longer than a few minutes. Your system may be taking longer to load than normal.
- On systems with Intel Pentium 4's, go into your bios and check to make sure you have multi-threading enabled. If not, enable it.
To CCP > C'Mon guys! How about a little help here. This silence is ridiculous. At least tell us that you are aware of the problem even if you have no idea what is causing it. Is ANYONE looking into it or are we on our own here?

Tell them to get in here and post in this thread. We need to show CCP that there are more than just a few people experiencing this problem.

Edited by: Hardreign on 22/01/2011 06:54:47 Would you believe me if I told you I was in a witness protection program? I just cannot afford new hardware to meet the specs for the character creator. Anyone have any suggestions for creative workarounds? I've tried 'em all! ________________________________________

What CCP should do is upon the portrait creation deadline provide a default portrait, something like this .
After that person recoils in horror at their new look they will then be given the default two opportunities at finalising a portrait as the rest have.
Then it will be locked until Walking In Stations/Incarna arrives in 2015. |

LMAO Hell, at this point, I'm so friggin frustrated with this and with CCP's incomprehensible silence that I'd gladly use that hilarious portrait!
Actually though, what they should do is figure out why we can't access the editor in the first place, then we could make our own default (that portrait is just too funny! LMFAO).

These shadowy portraits lend a bit of "veteran" and mystery to ones persona. I kind of like it.

I just went through a 20 min phone call with a nub friend who could not load the cc. I was looking forward to see what the problem is that many have been having. Soo... DRIVERS.
Make sure you are installing these updated video card drivers using the right click option >run as administrator.
If you don't do this the installer may run, and complete with reboot, but not give you the option to "clean remove" the old drivers. Which NEEDS to be done.
This poor fellow I helped, is making his toon as I type this.

It is not a drivers issue.
I got in once on my computer and, since then, have not been able to get in on any of my accounts.

Perhaps you can install EVE on another (person's) PC and remake your portrait there until you fixed your software problems?
Just being pragmatic here ...

Check this thread, it may apply to some of you. I'd suggest running the Logserver to find out whats causing the problem, it can be very obvious in a few cases.
Instructions to run the Logserver 1) Browse to your EVE folder 2) Double-click on the Logserver to run it. 3) Got File -> New Workspace 4) Run EVE and enter character creation. 5) When your EVE client hangs, scroll through the logs to see where it's stopping and the last error logged.
P.S It's important to do Steps 1-3 before you start Eve or the logserver won't hook up to it.

While I myself dont have these problems I do have alternate workaround suggestion. In the windows there is this thing called remote desktop .. umm something. It is intended basically for admins to remotely help noobish users. Pretty dangerous thing if you just leave it open for anyone to have acsess to, however, if you at the end of grace period still are unable to get your portrait generation working and game no longer allow you to log in perhaps you are able to convince some corpmate to let you use his gaming computer remotely for an hour to generate said portrait. Just get him to send you remote assistance request, accept it and you will gain full admin control of his gaming machine, including the display output of his desktop for a while.

All I see is a way to jack up the price on your character when you decide to sell it Until that time view it in an RP way. You have eluded the authorities your entire life and therefore have not been visually identified

Turn off shaders in settings. If the character creation thing takes longer than 20 seconds to load, I think it is your PC causing the problem.

Thanks Sturmwolke, I did not know that that was there. I ran it and found that I am getting a lot of errors, most notably:
- High level shader PointLight failed to bind, so low level binding will fail - (Dozens of times)
- Failed to get effect description. - (Again, dozens of times)
- pythunker returned with exception AND blue error. blue error: - (LONG LIST!)
- D3DERR_INVALIDCALL: (-2005530516, 'D3DERR_INVALIDCALL', 'Invalid call', 'Failed to CreateTexture') - (Eight times!)
From this, it looks as though the textures aren't being created due to missing libraries and I have an idea that this was a download error from the patch. During the download of the expansion, close to the end, I got an error message that a temporary error had occurred during the download. It hung there for approximately 10 to 15 minutes and then the download resumed and installed without any further issues. I'm wondering if the required libraries were skipped. Anyone from CCP want to comment on this?

Edited by: Rhok Relztem on 22/01/2011 20:28:26 Now I'm REALLY beginning to think CCP is not going to help us on this. Yesterday I filed a petition from here on the website (not from in-game) under Other Issues > Character Creation & Portraits about this issue. Now, more than 24 hours later, the petition is not listed in My Petitions. What in hell is going on here CCP?

What category did you file your petition under and is it listed under your My Petitions? My first petition (Other Issues > Character Creation & Portraits) mysteriously disappeared (but I do have the tracking ID #) so I just filed a second one under Technical Support > Graphic Problem (because I believe this is a graphic problem in some way). The second one IS listed in My Petitions. I expect that we won't hear anything until Monday at the earliest though, if we're lucky.

Got a quick response earlier today from my Technical Support petition but it was only to ask for a DxDiag.txt result for my system (which I forgot to attach to the initial submission ). Now we'll see how long it takes to find a solution or at least identify the problem. |

I hope they just run the randomizer for those that can't use the editor, would be a funnier option than the old exclamation mark. |

I got this one mostly from logserver.
High level shader SpotLight failed to bind, so low level binding will fail
Petitioned this on the 19/01/11 & got a response 2 days later about graphics setting, Directx & hardware updates etc. Tried that & nothing worked. They have my dxdiag file. Heard nothing in over 2 days now!
CCP don't know what's wrong & won't admit it that's my guess. They don't care that they're going to lose players in 2 to 3 weeks otherwise they'd send out a bulk email to let us all know that they're aware of the situation & are doing something about it. The silence from them is the most annoying thing.
When people want another go at creating their avatars they bend over backwards as it's something easy for them to do. When it's a major problem that's another matter!
How we about we organise a strike? We all cancel our subscritions for a month. Hit them in the pocket as monry is obviously the only thing that motivates them!

I have tried everything OP has posted, and then some. Tried 8 different graphics driver versions, including the latest WHQ certified ones released. My card supports shader model 2 and 3 and everything else runs fine, only char creator won't. The bar loads, and then it hangs, and after about 5 minutes I get the message that NV4_DISP has stopped responding and I have to reboot.
Setting all the settings to low, etc, also has no effect. I will run the logserver and see if I can get any hints, but so far, looks like I am stuck with a non character. |

Edited by: Voidghast on 23/01/2011 22:12:27 Hello my fellow non-portraiteers. I have successfully built a portrait despite previously having faced all of the symptoms you have illustrated. The character creator wouldn't launch for me ... at all, and I had planned on wheeling over to to a friends place to build my portrait there (and drink his whiskey).
What I did was I launched EvE in safe mode. Start>All Programs>EvE> Play EvE (Safe mode). And the character creator launched straight in ... without any delay. My jaw dropped. So I tinkered with the physiology, appearance, background, clothing etc and left all of the graphic settings at the defaulted 'safe mode'.
Once ready to build a portrait I hit 'ESC' and upped the graphic settings, first by turning Shadows on. Applying the settings and then adjusting the pose, then I went back into graphic settings and increased the Level of Detail, one step at a time.
Now don't get me wrong my machine had a freakin' heart attack every time I applied a new level of detail. But when it froze at a black screen I again hit 'ESC' changed to a different tab in the settings and then closed the settings window. Rendering everything took some time, and I wasn't able to manipulate the facing of the characters head, raise an eyebrow or apply a smirk. So do these physical changes before you increase your level of detail ... and do it slowly, one setting at a time.
I've included my archaic PC specifications for comparison.
