It always bothered me and after new character creator it bothers me even more, why everyone looks so human. No synthetic body modifications, no genetic engineering (apart from Jove), almost no external body modifications (visors with HUD and so on). Actually implants to connect with a pod is the only metal on capsuleers bodies. I personally can't believe that with current advancements in technology, humans will be anything like us in another 200 hundred years, let alone 20000.
Wouldn't it be way more awesome if I had borg-like implants?

I think CCP are planning on implants and such, the old character creator had some pretty crazy stuff after all. If they're serious on this 'immersive sci fi simulator' they've always wanted EVE to be then they'll definitely need to mirror the fiction with these kinds of ingame assets.
If you check out the Incursion trailer, you can see Kuvakei has a cybernetic eye, which I hope is a hint of things to come. Also the Amarr in the creator have metallic head plates right now... so I can see this being expanded on when they finish the tattoos.
I'm all for borg like implants.

This is relevant to my interests.
Please give us awesome looking implants and other jazz to slap on.
And another recustomization.

Tattoos didn't make it to this version but they are in the making. I hope other modifications will be available as well. The old creator did have them, after all.

Well the old creator had more modifications, but not enough. We need something more extreme, to make us look less human.

Ooh, can I chop my head off and replace it with a tea kettle? (Actually only partially joking... that would be freakin' awesome!)

I agree on the fact that technological gadget is missing. But the new creator makes something that old one does not:
Remembers us that, although we would want, we're still human in figure.
I'm waiting for scars, so I can add on my char, but i like my serious combat-driven looking character, not some bozo that came out of 70's sci-fi movie, totally unrelated to humanity, but claimed as being human. |

Being human sucks. They age, they die. Even this clone technology is too unreliable. We need cybernetic brains. |

It was already said, but I'll just say it again. :p
They will probably add all that stuff in later piecemeal. But they needed to have a basis first, which is the relatively mundane looking humans. The next addition will give us tattoos. The one after that, who knows?

I would say the short answer is because we want to. Appear human.
Ofcource it is highly personal how anyone relates to his/her character(s). Some devise interesting and quite plausible stories around their characters, alts. I myself look at my character(s) as sort of an organic merger. If you have read the bridgeburnerns novels, there is this mage Quick Ben who when running from the Malahazan army through some desert added souls of his coven mates into his own body as their bodies failed them, ending up in one body with about 12 souls in it.
So at first there was one podpilot, Carniflex. Do some testing, there is bound to be these that do not quite make it to the academy but they could, perhaps having higher risk of failure or such. Sponsor them, even if millions end up vegetables someone will make it. Merge his/her mind into yours and you end up something similar, just multiple bodies sharing a single merged mind. So if I have say 5 accounts I take it that thats the amount of bodies this 'merged mind' can handle at once at max. The more bodies you add the less effective you will be. It's hard work to fly 3 or more accounts in a fleet battle. That explanation kinda works for me although I'm not a lot into role-playing. Sort of like technological schizophrenia, with few higher SP characters as dominant personalities. It's still important to suspend a disbelief somewhat so that what you see makes sense. Thats how I explain myself how I know without any communication when hostile enters local few jumps out or distribute fire between targets in optimal way without any direct communication between my pilots.
Our flesh looking human now. I am immortal. On a good day I kill roughly about million humans. If I see a body I would like to wear I can afford it. It's only meat. So why I look as I do - because I want to. With the resources at our disposal we can look like anything we like, as long as it's big enough to hold our brain and some hardware to keep it ticking. Current 'rules' on our outside appearance ... I guess CONCORD is worried about possible riots and cults emerging if mortals down there can see all our tentacles so that why they have such ... rigorous rules ... about how we can appear to the general public. Shirts and boots and all that. Now how many tentacles we really have ... that only ourself can know. I myself prefer human bodies ... with modest cybernetic enchantments. Makes it ... easier ... for mortals.

You have to remember: If you want a body full of cybernetic enhancements and implant accessories, you're gonna have to re-purchase and re-install everything when you pass to a fresh clone. -----

If technology was available today, I would change my body so much that probably I wouldn't even be considered to be humanoid. So no, I don't want to appear human.

I think if you want to think about human evolution in the context of eve read Peter F Hamiltons void trilogy books. humans there are imortal and split into factions vying for power.
human adaption is the norm in these books from 8ft semi alien lookin women (accelerators) with silver metalic skin colour and implanted weaponry to semi normal (conservatives) with multiple bodies and a single mind.
if eve online could embrace some of this type of input the results would be amazing.

Few hundred years ahead of us is enough to get a cyborg body.

The Amarr built their first stargate in ad 21290, so even then they were unimaginably more technologically advanced than human society is now.
More than 2000 years have passed since then.
Think about what human beings were doing in the year 11, compared to today. Now consider that the rate of technological advancement tends to increase the more advanced technology becomes.
However, I don't really think that big clunky cybernetics would really be plausible in such an advanced civilization. Why have a huge visor when HUD displaying contact lenses or biomechanical implants are available?

Err...because they Can? Because people will look at them? Because they will stand out? Because they are so cool that even last centuries technology looks the biz on them? I mean, some people still wear flares in RL, you know.

If you have the technology to create such complex and intricate equipment such as implants and body augmentations, then why make them so physically obvious, other than those who body mod for decorative purposes?
There's no real need when things can be hidden. I mean, sure... a Marine wearing a ballistic helmet with a holo-impregnated visor that displays his ammunition count, weapon status, geographical location and a map of surrounding terrain, sure... but an egger, who's body is effectively grown to order, custom made to suit its intended user?
What is the point in having a huge mess of metal stuck in your face, when it can all be hidden beneath the surface without an issue?
Never has made sense to me.

Perhaps it can't. I imagine it'd be some sort of technical or medical standpoints. For example if an implant deals with the front parts of the brain or the optic nerves it'd be easier to have it plugged from the front (face). And because of it needs to be wired when in use it has to be exposed somehow. And because of its so many connections with the brain it needs to be volumed to accomodate the wires and cpus and stuff.

This is silly.
All it comes down to is the fact that the character creator isn't yet feature-complete. That's it. All there is to it.
...Fiction-wise, the idea that people in the future are going to generally want to not look human is pretty silly. How many people actually have the wherewithal to not only go through extensive body modification, but also make the conscious decision to make it as blindingly obvious as possible despite the fact that technology is more than capable of making it completely seamless while conferring all its benefits with no apparent side-effects? Not very many... and the general trend on avatars as seen on the forum alone is proof enough.
I'm probably the only capsuleer who looks like a child.

I wonder, once they improve the character creator with many new options, will the players that have finished their portraits be at least somehow be able to add those implants to existing chars, or modify them in any way. It would be cool. I won't be too sad if it's not an option, though.

Technically, fiction wise, all of the other races are still eons behind the Jove. So it kind of makes sense that no other race has come up with any of those things in the fiction.
