Unfortunately this is true for most movies based on games. Haven't seen them all (thankfully according to reviews).
However, one should be the first to suceed? It couldn't get any worse than some of those series not based on games, Babylon 5 comes to mind ... Not to mention the horrible, horrible "Independence Day" or "War of the Worlds" remake (donning flame secured suit).
Thinking flame secure - what was it with the mini flame fest? Wtf ...

Indeed. One should be the first to succeed.
I really can't see how a science fiction-game based on the lore of EVE would fail with a GOOD script and a GOOD director. ___ 'I'll rather die than yet again become a slave forgotten by history and forsaken by destiny.' |

Yeah. I liked Resident Evil somewhat.
It's true that making films out of games has a bad history and therefore a bad sting to it, but we can't generalize like this. It is possible that it would work with a good script and a good director. Equally would I think so if EVE had never existed and all I read was a script that sounded like the lore of EVE. ___ 'I'll rather die than yet again become a slave forgotten by history and forsaken by destiny.' |

Personally i think a movie would be awesome too. Have ya read the novel? It is very well written, would be great if they based the movie on that

I have only seen a few chronicles. Is there an 'official' novel that includes the total history of New Eden or what is it about? ___ 'I'll rather die than yet again become a slave forgotten by history and forsaken by destiny.' |

There's just too much backstory to properly establish much of anything even in a book (if you are to believe the reviews for "The Burning Life"), let alone a motion picture, so a single movie no matter how "epic" will not do EVE justice. A TV series might do it, but then again, those are a bit trickier... and it would heavily depend on what TV channel picks it up.
A machinima series however, possibly only internet-broadcasted at first (basically a glorified CCP PR campaign, and we highly suspect CCP already spends quite a bit of moolah on promotions), then MAYBE after a few seasons moved over to the TV screen (either "as is" or translated into live-action with heavy-duty special effects)... now that would be a nice start.
Originally by: Mijano Is there an 'official' novel that includes the total history of New Eden or what is it about?
There's two, actually. One is basically a guided tour of the EVE world, the second deals with the story surrounding the emergence of factional warfare. From what I hear, at least. Haven't had the occasion to read either.

I'd rather have 10 more clear skies movies than 1 movie made by Hollywood... since Ian Chisholm at least knows how to make decent eve movies unlike Hollywood who couldn't keep an apocalypse from an Armageddon.
But if you want an EVE movie by Hollywood may I point you to the recently abused IP: AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER...

Hollywood would screw it up big time. They have ruined almost every movie based off of a game. If there was to be an actual EvE based movie I would rather see it done in full CGI instead of actual actors.

Mmmm possibly, alhtough - considering that the content of null sec is actually player based - you might get around that problem to a fairly large degree. Anyway, come think of it, a series might be much better as there is no linear story in EVE. At all. So nothing to base stuff off. Then again there is no linear story to abuse either

For the scale of EVE, it should be a trilogy like The Matrix or The Lord of The Rings.

Not sure about a movie, so much lore and things going on in empire and null. (A trilogy maybe? Quadralogy?) How about a TV-series from the makers of new Galactica / Stargate Universe? At least EvE would not loose anything on it. Maybe gain some new players.
But is such thing would happen, producers, writers and directors should forget that eve is a computer game. They should focus on the lore and pay the respects on it and make the movie/tv-series form it. Movie or tv-series would NOT have to revolve around podpilots, sure they would be there but not in the leading aspect. Maybe the story would involve a carrier with it's brave fighterpilots and it's small support fleet etc. EvE is so frigging big that putting it all to one movie is a failure. Sometimes one must think small to get big! Roses are #FF0000, Violets are ##0000FF, all my base are belong to you... |

Yeah, sadly true, I could count on my fingers the number of game-based movies that are halfway decent, let alone good.
As cheesy as it was, possibly "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" was the best game-based movie so far, and that's not really saying much. The second best would be the "Resident Evil" set, but that wasn't all that great either, more of an excuse to show off eyecandy Mila Jovovich than showcase the stuff from the games. Third best would be the first "Mortal Kombat" more or less tied with "DOA: Dead or Alive" (hooray, more eyecandy). And I use the term "best" (even when I also say "third") only reluctantly.
Almost everything else ? Disastruous.
P.S. Ok, ok... granted, "Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within" was better than any of the above mentioned ones (although not by that much), still, you can't exactly call it a "video game movie"... well, ok, you sort of could, but, meh, it's more than just a bit of a stretch.

Game movies that sucked:
Super Mario Brothers Wing Commander Mortal Combat Street Fighter Far Cry Alone in the dark 1 AND 2 Double Dragon Tomb raiders Bloodraynes Doom and the list goes on...
The only "good" movies based on videogames would be, Silent hill, Final Fantasy spirits within and Final fantasy advent children. (Last one only good to FF7 fans, rest might have "the what?" feeling) Also Max payne was almost good movie. The plot was somewhat brainfart.

If anything, it doesnt need a 'grand scale' movie about empires against empires, films about the little people are much better.
Get Duncan Jones to do a moon 'clone', (if you pardon the pun), and that will be ace.
Plz can it have Sam Rockwell though...
Would having Vin Diesel as a Minmatar be too close to riddick?

Surprisingly I actually liked Spirits Within. Granted I was warned not to try and compare to the games. Also Silent Hill wasn't horrible but it wasn't great either.
Saw that Netflixs has FarCry on streaming. Might have to watch it for lols since heard it was just horrible.

How exactly would a movie work when eve is all pod pilots? Would 'insert favorite actor' look cool or tough or mean in a pod? I know its a different story but what would of happen if EJO gave orders from a goo pod? Then if it were made witout pods and lead actors could stand on the bridge of a ship it would probably tick off most of eve players cause there not following the eve story with pods.

Admittedly, I am no expert in such things but why is it not possible to do a good movie based on Eve? I mean, it seems like there are tons of movies out there based on comic books that seem to be much better done and much more successful than game based movies.
Someone thought that basing the movie off of an Eve novel would be a better idea and there are many movies based on books that are even better than the comic book movie. So why not?
Perhaps someone should do a graphic novel and base the movie on that?
A final thought, why would a movie have to delve into the entire history of New Eden anyway? Take one period of time or one major event, start the movie with some variation of a basic history flash-back or narrative, and focus on what story or event was chosen.

For now, we might need to wait for a solid story writer to come up and take the torch to success. I love the two books but they were lacking in their interpretation of the world of EVE.
It aint bad but it's still lacking and the stories a still weak. Empyrean Age could have become a movie but in the end, it fell a bit short and was quickly forgotten. Now I am not saying it's not a good idea, I'm just saying that right now. We don't have a storyline that could really fit well on a screen.
Take DUNE for example. An amazing sci-fi epic but so far, Children of Dune was the only thing that came close at capturing the true essence behind DUNE. As for the first book, Lynch was off by a lot and the mini series of Dune had the essence but lacked the screenplay.
EVE deserves to be well written and translated into the silver screen. However, something like the crew of Firefly, trying to make a survival in the world of EVE could become a solid starting point.
It's hard writing a solid story based on 4 empires that are good in their own sense. Seeing the Amarr empire as the bad guys of EVE is a terrible mistake.
So yep, great idea but now... we need a great story. ________________________________________________ Lysianna Hazumason Celestial Janissaries Curatores Veritatis Alliance
