Makes sense to me. Because as we all know, the only thing that will calm down geeks, net pirates, **** enthusiasts and other internet addicts and keep them from raging on the streets, is to forcibly take away their internet access.

I remember the days when it was Radio Stations that were crucial in social uprisings, and if you think this is only about Egypt, believe me, we are going to see a lot more interest from all governments in asserting state control over Internet communications.

And she just got cut off around 23:00 yesterday. I knew this would happen, and i told her so. and she said if it does happen, no one will have a reason to stay home anymore. Since they can't actually read this thread, I guess saying good bye isn't the right thing to do at this point.
I welcome back our egyptian collegues to the sweet, sweet internet. I hope you and your loved ones are in good health and the society didn't suffer a total collapse while you were away. I also hope things are starting to look a bit brighter, since they are allowing you back in here to mingle with the rest of humanity and play internet spaceships again. Good luck picking up the pieces and trying to build something better out of this mess.

Egypt is an import country to the west because of the suez canal. Would be nice if they could get a real 'democracy' rather than what they have now but I dont have my hopes up.

Well, I'm not surprised that the Egyptian Government would shut it down since it was being used to organize the protests. That would be a logical thing for them to do. They shut down cell service as well.
But at this point ... if they're all out in the streets ... they don't much need the internet to organize.
It's one of those things where ... most of the Arab nations were run by dictators or kings and ... their populations are becoming fairly well educated.
With Iraq and Afghanistan (not Arab but Muslim) having fledgling democracies and the rioting in Iran (also not Arab but Muslim) you've got examples that Muslim peoples running their own nations is something that can happen. They don't just have to sit back and take it.
There's no telling how all this is going to play out. If you look at what happened in Iraq, the price of their freedom has been fairly bloody and they aren't out of the woods yet and of course neither is Afghanistan.
You've got all kinds of players involved here (not all of whom are voices of reason and light) and there's no telling how all this is going to work out. Even in Tunisia ... the old prime minister is still there. Iran got rid of the Shah but ... to my mind ... the mullahs are worse. The very thing that got the Shah in trouble was trying to drag Iran's peasants out of the middle ages - which is just where their mullahs wanted them.
Of course in China, you had the Tienanmen movement that was bloodily repressed so people in the street doesn't automatically equal anything.
The people of the Philippines threw Marcos out though and - European communism collapsed in fairly short order once it didn't have Soviet tanks to keep it alive.
This could all be over in a couple of weeks ... or it could be very long and bloody. Every nation is different and what will come out of this - if anything - could vary from nation to nation.
If you look at the path to democracy taken by the industrialized nations of the planet ... there were a lot of very long bloody paths - often with horrible missteps (like WWII) along the way. So there's just no telling what is going to happen.
I wish the people of all these nations well.

Well looks like it's running out of control now.
Sadly, I expect nothing much will change for the people even if they overthrow Mubarak. There will still be 80+ million people (and growing), most of them poor, trying to live in a country that is 94% desert. Democracy won't make sand edible. Still, I hope they succeed.

I've always been on the side of the government in crazy uprisings like this, when protests turn violent it must be met with an exponential amount of violence in order to prevent it from happening again. At this point they don't really have a choice as the sh*t just got real

You know, in some countries broadband internet access is considered human right. Egypt ofc is not one of them. Finland for example is a place where internet access is a human right.

Seems like internet access is being finally restored to some extent.
I'd like to say things are starting to look better, but the man isn't willing to give up power early and it seems like battle lines are being drawn between the regeme supporters and the protestors, with the supporters putting pressure on the protestors to go home. Interesting to see whether the protestors push back or fold without a fight.

Now that Obama has told Mubarak to bugger off, it's game over. What replaces him is another matter. It looks like democracy, and I doubt they will go to war with Israel unless they all want to die horribly. This could be the start of a slightly less dark world.

The problem with regime change in despotic regimes is that the old guard who have control of the levers of power slowly but surely re-assert control. But I think the old guard know some sort of progressive change must ensue.
