For a long time now POS structures continue to be overlooked by CCP to make them function to the advantage of the corporations that deploy them. This suggestion isn't new as much as it's come to CCP needing to take the initiative to address the issue properly for the sake of everyone in game.
POS labs as they are currently setup do not work properly. Say a corporation wants to setup POS labs and make them available to members in the corporation. The corp has no choice but to give hanger access and wallet access so that a BPO can be installed. This is wrong. A person that invests in BPOs should not have to put trust in the corporation and rely upon the fact that their BPOs won't be stolen just to be able to use a POS lab and a corp shouldn't have to give access to hangers for everyone to use them just to access those labs.
Research labs should be able to be made publicly available as well as work properly for all members in an alliance. When I say publicly available I mean to people that aren't in their corp or alliance. This allows corps to compete with NCP stations and expand the number of publicly available research slots in given areas.
Everything is there to make this work. Having all boxes unchecked should actually be restricted access so that a lab is only available to members with roles to access them. Opening labs for alliance and corp members when checked should work properly if a BPO is put in for research directly from someones personal hanger. This includes the items needed for the research and invention.
Labs should be treated much like the customs offices for PI. You put the items into a delivery type hanger where people can input and output items that are launched to the POS and once the job is complete and they deliver the job it is transported back to the station from the POS. If we can do this with PI, then doing the same thing for research labs on a POS should be viable.
This brings me to the fact that a check box needs to be added to make a lab publicly available which then activates the standings and rate increase or decrease according to those standings.
By doing this it also encourages players to work with corps or to compete with one another and a number of various end results can happen as a result of this taking place.
This system has been broken for a long time now. There are positive changes that have been made but the effort to go all the way to fixing the issues that people have with POS labs are far from addressed by CCP.
Obviously if you have a POS in a system with no station in it, then you have to give people access to that lab. That should be able to be done with a access mechanism such as the one used for channels and mailing lists. This also would negate the need for hanger tabs on the POS labs. The lab can have an input and output that specifically hands out bpos or takes in items needed for research in order to install the job. Of course you can have a max materials capacity on the lab but considering the the number of slots available and time limitations on research it wouldn't be a massive volume of materials in a POS lab and you could ignore the volume capacity and just allow for the materials needed to be installed with the job.
Either way, CCP needs to take action to fix issues with the POS labs sooner than later. This has gone on long enough where these issues have been ignored. Other suggestions or ideas are most welcome.

bump for a good idea. CCP needs to take a look at fixing POS structures to work properly. They're a costly structure to put up and they need to be fixed after all this time.
There is no reason that the same snap code used in stations should be used for labs. There is no reason that members of a corp that have the remote lab skills should not be able to use their own hangers to research their own bpos. There is no reason that a corp should have to give permissions to a wallet and hangers for people to drop their bpos into just to be researched and have to trust a corp.
This issue is long overdue to be fixed and needs real attention. |

You would think that empire pvp would be reason enough to resolve this issue since they seem to want more of it to begin with.
There is enough in this post to take a serious look at how labs and other structures on a POS work and to give them a proper overhaul so that they work to the advantage of the corps deploying them and so that they can be used to open the markets up to more player based marketing to compete with NPC installations.
They've already taken a number of things and turned it over to player based markets such as the building of POS structures with the advent of PI. Why not finish the job and allow those POS structures do their job.
The other thing that bothers me is why does CCP have minerals on moons in high sec if they can't be harvested? Shouldn't that be changed as well to permit those that have standings to deploy a high sec POS to harvest as well? This only continues to force people to have to consider the value of their POS structure and the moons they deploy it on as being targets for another empire corp that wants to harvest and produce materials. It would definitely be cause for more people to have to fight to hold on to what they have or be relegated to use moons that have less value.
It would balance the price of T2 components since CCP decided to gouge everyone on materials needed to build T2 ships and make invention a more viable aspect of the game. There are just so many broken things right now that need to be addressed with POS structures that one is left to wonder why they continue to overlook the obvious problems in favor of more frills and thrills with big stuff. I think they'd make a major part of the community much happier by fixing things that are already in game so that everyone can benefit in the long term.
