I played the rift beta for this most recent event.
Long story short, this game is a WoW, except with more classes, and a lot shinier. The UI and combat are the same. The back stories and art-style are very similar. I felt like I was playing WoW again.
The only thing entertaining about the game was the rift system, where creatures would randomly come out and go on a murderous rampage, raping every little noob player they come across. But don't get your hopes up, as it isn't as fun as it seems.
I got to level 11 playing as a guardian warrior, before I stopped playing earlier today.
TL;DR: Rift is WoW 2. A bit better, but still the same ****. __________________________

I disagree. There are lots of similarities, but also many differences. The class customization is very cool. At the lower levels, the combat is much faster paced. It's very well polished, for a game still technically in 'beta'. I'll almost definitely pick it up. I played WoW for 4 years, and RIFT seems like it's going to do very well.
Still, to each their own. -------------------

It is WoW clone. Sure, better looking, with some things done in somewhat different way (plus few rip-offs from the games like LOTRO and Warhammer online) but it's still just a copycat.
I think life span of that game will be very short. Just wait for the summer WoW expansion and november launch of GW2 and SWTOR and see what happens with Rift subscriptions.

looks kind of like some hybrid of WAR and Aion, which might not be a bad thing but I won't be going anywhere near it

typical fantasy MMO player who tries to justify every terrible WoW clone by saying it has all these differences, which in reality are so minor and unnoticeable that, to the normal person, they're not worth mentioning.
<---- Waiting for GW2, blade and soul, and TERA. Waiting, but not sitting at the edge of my seat expecting them to be awesome.

Me, a typical fantasy MMO player? hardly. I've played EVE non-stop for 2 years. Fantasy MMO comes out, and I'm the first to criticize it. Rift has features that no other fantasy MMO does. However, I'll concede that it does also copy quite a few. Rift is not a game that I would call a WoW clone. WoW imitator? yes. And it is far from terrible. I'm enjoying the low levels of Rift far more than I ever have in any other MMO.
On a side note, I too am waiting for GW2. -------------------

@ "It isn't a clone it's an imitator". That sounds like you are just trying to say it is a WoW clone, but want to avoid the derogatory connotation of the saying. A few unique features isn't enough to alter the fact it is a pure bred WoW clone. Every WoW clone has done something differently from WoW, but they are always features that aren't enough to make a meaningful difference when comparing the games.
A new MMO which you can easily categorize as a WoW clone isn't a bad thing per se and it doesn't make it a bad game. It's just disappointing, uninspiring and uninteresting.

bleh. that's what I get for posting on 3 hours of sleep
Anyway, like I said earlier, to each, their own. I'm enjoying RIFT more than any other fantasy MMO I've played (except maybe AoC), despite it's similarities to others. -------------------

I think ill throw in my two cents, my friend gave me a beta key last week and i was finally invited to the beta. Yes it does feel alot like WoW, however while everyone is quick to say "lolz WoW clone" I for one dont mind that. Its not like developers can reinvent the wheel everytime they come out with a new game, to me Rift feels like an amalgamation of the best features from a bunch of MMOs. My feeling is they took everything that made WoW good and improved the stuff that sucked. Anyways those are my thoughts.

Yeah.
It's WoW2. They asked me if I was a God, and I said no, because God doesn't have an annoying sig. |

Sigh, I guess I didn't get my point across. What I meant to say was, Rift is merely combining the best mechanics from other MMOs into something better, much like WoW did back in the day. Thats not a bad thing, that is how it works, games are influenced by the predecessors. Innovation doesnt just take quantum leaps every time a game comes out, when developers try that, it crashes and burns. So what im trying to say is stop calling it a WoW clone like its a bad thing, and try to analyze the game as a whole.

well considering my first hour with rift was full of frowns and swearing, and my first hour of wow was full of smiles and kind words, i would like to say that wow was better. Rift feels like tabula rasa, but with less fun. also every quest in that game is either kill x, or use x on mob to kill. i know a lot of games are like that but they could at least try to mix it up. and defending against rift incursions (ololol) is actually pretty boring.

after over a ****ing decade of the same god damn thing, someone needs to reinvent the wheel already.
So yes, it is a bad thing. We already have 500 different versions of the same game, and 99% of them fail miserably.

A thousand times this. If i wanted to play WoW i'd play WoW, not yet another clone. Tera and Secret World are the only mmo's worth looking forward to atm after Earthrise seems to have failed already >_>

That's why most people are "looking forward to it" because it claims new game mechanics for MMO's, and not jumping up for joy just at the mention of it. It's sad, really, to be that used to disappointment.
By the way, Aion is terrible.
