looks like some kind of Orion drive. hand-interface thingie is cheesy. i wouldn't trust human to manually handle a nuke. ________________________________ : Forum Bore 'Em : Foamy The Squirrel - [jedi handwave] "There is no spoon." |

An old Sci-fi standard. Been around since the late 40's, early 50's.

My thoughts too. Seems there's only one place to insert it, so it would make sense to have that automated for precision, but it wouldn't be quite so radical.

Yes, it was called an Orion drive. Killed by Kennedy just before the limited test ban treaty.
One thing most do not know is the bomb yield is quite small, 0.01 kiloton. A drive bomb has both the exploding part and "propellant" that is heated by the bomb, and its that heated propellant that pushes the ship. So you got a 100 kg device that has the energy output of 10,000 kg of normal fuel.
The manual loading is junk. you need 1 to 4 pulses per second, and several thousand of them for your mission. General Atomics, which started Orion, actually talked to Coke about their dispensing machines to get ideas.
There is a book "Project Orion" by George Dyson if you want to learn more. It includes pictures of an actual flying model (using normal explosives).

The slingshot or whatever their other engine was? The nuke engine has been around for a while, but banned by that space anti-nuke treaty.
Slingshot? Yes. That is how you currently get something to go very fast.

never seen NPP in action in sci fi before. i had the idea for a anti-matter pulse propulsion using anti-matter created on site using the energy from a fusion reactor. but i never knew what that would look like, now i know.

exploding a nuke behind a ship however... though nukes in actual space didn't work that well because of lack of a dense enough medium to create shockwaves? ---

Only as a weapon, and only if you really want to physically crush spaceships with the bomb. There's still the heat and radiation to deal with and they become rather nasty when there's no atmosphere to absorb themà
Instead of a shockwave and heated air, you'll get ~90% of the energy in the form of x-rays, and that'll ruin your day just fine. Granted, it will fall off quite rapidly since you're dealing with spherical dispersion, and don't get the (limited) shaped-charge effect of having a planet underneath to direct that explosion. So its range will be somewhat lacking unless you make it a shaped charge.
The Orion drive is basically a shaped-charge with the ship sitting at the not-pointy-end of the weaponà
In fact, just go knock yourself out here. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

I agree it was the best part but on the whole I think it was very very good. Good acting, a great plot and simply awesome music. The music really put the cherry on the top

One sec, I'll link you something about it.
EDIT: Stupid Facebook. I had this linked from along time ago, and I had to first find where they kept the things I linked, and sort through the links to get to the point where you don't care how the hell I found it, just that I offer NASA's Nuclear Pulse Vehicle Study.
