Hi all, I've been lurking on the MD threads for a while now, but earlier on tonight a question occurred to me: when you talk of billions, do you mean the American or British billions? (ie one thousand million, or a million million). Like it says in the title, I can't think of a more basic foundation than this, and I haven't seen the answer anywhere. Thanks in advance for your replies. (honest question, no troll here)

I didn't even know there was such a thing as "british billions".
We mean a thousand millions. "British billions" (a billion in the long scale) are hardly ever used anymore in English-speaking countries per Wikipedia but thanks for the interesting note.

Not in English perhaps, but there are quite a few languages out there where Billion still means mostly a million millions. This can be confusing to non-english native speakers so the question is quite a good one.

QFT Take the Dutch language for example 1 billion = 1 000 000 000 000 not 1000 000 000.

If Bully Billy banked a British billion bullion, would he have banked a million million bullion or a billion bullion from Britain?

In French too. (10^6)^n = one n-illion, 1000 n-illion = 1 n-illiard 10^6 = 1 million 10^9 = 1 milliard 10^12 = (10^6)^2 = 1 billion = 1000 american billions 10^15 = 1000 billions = 1 billiard 10^18 = (10^6)^3 = one million of billions = 1 trillion 1O^21 = one trilliard ... -------------------------------- Fulbert. In German, too:
One Million DE = one million US One Milliarde DE = one billion US One Billion DE = one thousand billions US

EVE uses the "short scale".
And then there's the whole debacle about the thousand separator/decimal mark ("," or ".") as well http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decimal_mark
EVE uses "," for thousand separator and "." for decimal mark.

Too bad they didn't go the whole hog and just use Miles & Feet instead of Kilometers & Meters.
