Indeed it does.
On that note, regardless of a sentry's optimal/falloff, it can only be instructed to shoot things that are within your drone control range. |

I would like to add a question related to this.
Example Distance to target
From drone to target 85 KM From my ship to target 45 KM
By which distance the system goes ?

I am not sure if it got fixed but once your Drones engaged the target they were able to follow your target well beyond drone control range.
Drone control is related to distance between target and your ship. You cannot execute a command to Engage beyond drone control range.

Drones will now de-agress when the target moves beyond drone control range.
I know this because I was exploiting the old mechanic to kill large rats (burn in, release the hounds, burn out, laugh) while killing smaller ones with guns, but it stopped working at some point. ---

Two things need to happen.
1) Your drones need to be inside your control range. 2) Your target needs to be inside your control range.
With sentry drones, if both of the above is true - your drones will dutifully try to shoot at the target.
For other drones - they will try to fly to the target and engage if the target is within your control range, I don't think the location of the drones matters there (but having your drones significantly outside your control range will not happen often).

Not quite. Non-sentry drones will indeed dutifully ignore you if either your range to them or your range to target exceeds your drone control range. It doesn't come up often but it is annoying when it does.
