A day that will always stick in my mind was the day I was leaving WH space with the last load of station parts in a badger. The exit into KS was lowsec only 2 jumps from high and I had scouted it with alts finding only 1 toon in only one of the systems so I chanced it. The guy was cloaked next to a gate and managed to scramble and web me. In seconds the badger was gone and the pod was down to the last 10% hull when he asked for 50 mills ransome in PC. I am not real quick at typing and so by the time I looked back at the screen I realised that the lock was gone and another ship was there engaging him. I warped to the next gate jumped into highsec and docked at the nearest station. I admit I was shaking like a leaf and had to check that the +5's, the michi and the rest of the implants were still in tact. It would have been a 1.5 bill pod kill and the guy would never have known. There must be a God in Eve I'm sure.

I've had a few very near -and potentially costly, misses in my Eve career.
It has made a bit more cautious...I daresay paranoid
But unlike other games, we have to contend with more than just a bruised ego.

This'll sound stupid and carebearish but...
Bought a Navy apoc with all my money, started doing L4s. Second one I'm in, I start taking armor damage disturbingly fast, and oops, one of my sets of hardeners is wrong.
Tried to warp out and OH LAWD I'M SCRAMBLED. OH SHEIT LOCK THE FRIG. 15 SECOND FRIG LOCK **** YEAH! OVERLOAD THE LOWER RACK! GO HOBGOBLINS GO!
In the end I managed to kill the frig and escape, but six out of eight of my lower slots burned out just as I warped, and the other two were at 98% damage. I was halfway into hull damage when I finally warped, so I can confidently say if it wearn't for overloading my 900mil investment [which was my entire wallet] would be space dust.

Today I docked out my Taranis in Chamemi heading out on a 27 jump long journey. When I sat there in space, moving away from the station i noticed that my Taranis was fitted with a sensor booster, NO propulsion modules at all and two armor reps. "This is strange" I though to myself, "how drunk was I when I fitted this piece of crap."
Wait a minute...
This is no Taranis, this is a Thanatos! Only a few seconds away from warping to the gate to high sec, I forced my carrier to a stop and had to wait a few nervously seconds for Scotty to drink his coffee and let me dock up again.

Our corp had just joined a new alliance and we were in the process of moving the corp gear from our old base of ops to our new one.
The alliance had a few staging POS so that alliance members could get around fairly safely. Two of us are in fully travel fitted Archons and were making a few trips - we only had a couple to go so all was good.
I forget the system in question that had the mid-point POS but noted that it had been quiet for the majority of our jumps and things were nearly done. My mate lit the cyno and we jumped - he made it to the shields of the POS, he was lucky and 'landed' within a couple of km and I jumped in probably no more than 13km from the shields.
At that moment, a member of a reputable pvp corp entered the system and it was noted that he was in a Stilleto - no worries as one of us was in the shields, I was close and the guns would shoot him when/if he came.
I don't know what made me think of it BUT I then realised that the cyno alt was a neut and hadn't been shot... quick cloak and all is good - speed is recovering and I am slowly making it to the POS.
Next, the stilleto is at the pos - eek! it takes him all of 20 seconds to realise that it hasn't locked him and 100+ of his chums enter local...
I am now thinking okay - all is good as long as I can make it to the POS - not long to go. I then note that the inty is getting damed close... he is orbiting the pos and will be on an intercept course if he and I both continue on the same headings - he must have scanned and seen two Archons and must have sussed out that one of them (ie me!) was cloaked.
My cap is regenned enough that I can jump out - I start screaming at my other corp mate at the end destination to get ready to light the cyno.
The fleet get to the pos and the inty is about 20km away from me and spookily heading right at me. Quick last check, cap is good to go, cyno is lit, uncloak and gtfo - I swear to god that he was under 10km away from me when I jumped.
I made it to the destination all okay but had to go sit down for 10 mins as I was shaking that much lol :) I swear, the feeling of dread and helplessness that came over me when that all kicked off is something that I will always remember

I remember taking my carebear hauler from Jita to Torrinos, and I wasn't really paying attention to the jumps I was taking...I ended up overshooting Torrinos and jumping into EC-....
There were a couple of NC bears camping the gate ofc, but for some reason they didn't shoot...I just found the quickest align point, warped out and warped back to the Torrinos gate safely (no bubble, thank god).

Warping out at 8% hull left in my Myrmidon after killing a Dominix and Deimos and evading a Raven, Typhoon and Nidhoggur that warped in to save their mates :P
Also I had no module in my ship that had less than 50% damage, overheating allowed me to burn out of point range and escape :)

Tama:
Engaged a Flashy Red in my HM Drake. He engages and away we go............
I'm pointed but that's ok, i'm pointing him as well. I'm massively confident he's going to die.
Mistake: Didn't bother to look for a spike in Local because Tama spikes so regularly from FW that it's almost commonplace.
7 more flashy reds engage me and i'm going down fast. I align to a Safe thinking that it's all over. I split and retarget my little Hornet EC-300s to the frigates pointing me and spam the Warp to 0 button. Shields gone..........Armor gone............i'm into structure........ OMFG.......I'M WARPING!!!!!!
I end up with 7% Structure by the time i bother to look when i'm at my Safe.
Hands are shaking so much that i have trouble getting my arrow settled on the Align button for the Nourv gate.
I send a msg in Local saying "That was close!" Pirates respond the same way saying they almost had me. We all have a laugh.
I love that rush. Never played a game that gives that kind of excitement.

Sitting on a gate while a corpie pushed an Astarte through, waiting to put a point on it with my huginn. Astarte jumps in, buddy jumps in, but I miss the point and the astarte warps off and my corpie follows him. As I was aligning to warp I see a BS land on the gate, a nice fat war target, and just as it jumps I see: Apoc Navy Issue (back when they were brand new and not terribly common). So I give a yell on voice, and jump through after it.
Get a lock and tackle then hang on for dear life for the next two minutes while the corp comes running from the other system, forgetting the fleeing astarte.
Just as gang mates start jumping in the Apoc, still strong under my Huginn's meager DPS, calls in his own reinforcements. I turn and burn away, trying to get out of incoming support tackle range, watching shields and armor melt. Just as I see the nice blue flash of the Apoc go boom I hit warp, burning brightly.
Land at a planet beside a corpmate's burning Dominix... with a whopping 7 hull left. Not 7 percent, but 7 whole points. Considering they were doggone expensive at the time, and I was flying with two overpriced Domi webs, I escaped an expensive loss by seven whopping points. While sitting there getting repped an enemy HAC lands on us, likewise badly pummeled by the fight, and I throw on the tackle, end up in low hull again, but added the HAC to the killboard. :)

Although I've lived a long time in null, my closest near miss is from hisec. On a much more frequently occurring basis. Getting into a Gurista scout outpost, and finding out that someone else is already there. Then things become a race to the cheese at the end, and sometimes, stealing the can is just worth it :) Really gets the adrenaline going.

I'm a carebear so this stuff will go carebearly, but the point is: once upon a time, doing a Lvl4 (Damsel in distress), I warped out from a nasty tactical position with as many as 28 hitpoints left from my Apocalypse's hull. It felt like leaving my grave after the first shovelfulls of dirt hit my coffin...
Then I went into a station, repaired my modules, rebuilt my armor using the reps and blew the s*** out of those guys.
OTOH, my nearly misses that went wrong have costed me so far 3 Apocalypses, 1 Armageddon, 1 Legion and 2 Apocalypse Navy Issue (one of which was ninja looted by some helpful soul, lol ). Being a carebear is so cheap and easy-going, yeah!

Now that's just plain old crazy talk right there. Everyone knows you have to interface the bread with the marmite using nanite repair paste.
(Oh, and by the way, it is entirely possible to eat only marmite for a whole year. Hell, you can already buy marmite cheese and last Christmas they even introduced marmite flavoured chocolate.) -----

We had. just liberated a pile of T2 ship bpcs from a blue LFA wreck.Since LFA were legendary scumbags our CEO said we could keep em. On my way back to Misaba we get into a skirmish with Flying Dangerously. So in my Drake filled with ill gotten gains we engaged. Thankfully I was not popped.
LFA had already claimed we had stolen from the wreck, so missing a CTA would have looked guilty, but if I'd been popped it would've been there in black and white.
In the end none of it mattered, two days later LFA transferred SOV to UK and CVA's fate was sealed. Mine would be have to be back in the day during the great war between bob and goons. The bunch I was with rolled out to assault a station. We did pertty good up until they onlined the bubble and dropped a carrier on us. Everyone else got out of the bubble cept me I had another 5kms to go and they started to pound my ship into scrap. Got out with 200 hull on my dominix, which earned my nickname with that corp for a long while, "ship on fira" and it would probabl be the first of four close calls in my short pvp carreer. Biggest near miss for me was when my first carrier (Thanatos) escaped a battle with only about half structure left. It was a fight in Catch vs AAA, I was in IAC (Interstellar Alcohol Conglomerate) at the time, a cap fight of carriers/dreads (from back in the day when these still happened). Our CVA "allies" quit the field (which is one reason why to this day I hate those guys), leaving the IAC caps in a bubble.
Carriers don't move very fast but somehow I managed to make it outside the bubble enough to jump to a cyno beacon just before dying.
Adrenaline rush doesn't BEGIN to describe that feeling!
That carrier AGAIN escaped in deep armor during the MAX campaign (I was in KIA). I still own it, it's "retired" in a hangar in lowsec, I don't really intend to ever use that carrier again where it would go into harm's way, it's the only ship I own in EVE that if it got destroyed I'd actually weep over it.

I haven't lost a pod in...eight-ish months now. Closest in between then and now was when I had to slowboat for 3 minutes out of a bunch of bubbles in the middle of a four-hundred person fleet fight.
I guess they had bigger things to worry about. -- Need a break from EVE? |
