Hello, I started playing a little over a year ago, took a break, and came back. Still fairly fresh to this. I am having fun reading load outs, building ships, and learning the ins and outs of different ships, modules, rigs, etc for different situations. My questions are these:
How many ships is "average" to have on hand at any one time?
I know ships serve different purposes, but do you need to keep around those frigates from your starter days once you have destroyers or cruisers? (Not rookie ships)
Is it common place to have 20, 30, or 40 fitted and ready to go ships at a time, or just pick a few favorites and stick with them?
As far as racial specialization, keep it to one, or is two+ a waste of time?
I guess this could just boil down to personal preference and station space, but I was looking for insight from people who have been around longer as to the practicality of having few or many ships. Thanks for any and all input on this.

Disclaimer: I'm an Industrialist, and don't mission very much.
I have... 1 Cruiser ready for mission running (when I do run missions) or a quick swap to do astrometric scanning/hacking/salvaging. 1 Frigate ready for scanning. 1 Noctis ready for salvaging. 1 Retriever ready for mining. 1 Hauler ready for hauling. 1 Battleship ready for whatever silly stuff I do in a battleship. 1 Logistics ship ready to collect dust.
If I don't have at least one of each of the above ships ready at all times, I feel incomplete.
What do I NEED? Probably just the hauler and the battleship. I use the hauler to haul bulky items, and the battleship for hauling expensive items. (My Typhoon serves as a psuedo hauler for me when I equip 7x Expanded Cargohold's in it. It has over 3k storage space and over 40k EHP.) Logically I know I only need the hauler and BS, but that doesn't make me feel any less empty when I am missing even one of the above.

Keep as many as you want. There is no limit on hangar space - it just gets cluttered.
There are any number of reasons for keeping ships ... mostly it's convenience.
I have some characters that have specialty ships associated with their jobs others that use general ships.
Some corporations have corporate hangars but the use of these and the sharing of ships is somewhat problematic. Mostly it depends on the people in your corporation.
Where it really starts to matter if you've got a lot of ships all set and ready to go - is for PVP. There - you stand a really good chance of getting any ship you're in blown up - so you want to have a number of them all set and ready to go - so that when you get back to your station from the battle - you can jump in one of them and go right back out again. Exactly how many you're going to need depends on what you're doing and your experience at doing it. It also depends on how much money you've got.
One of the reasons for keeping old ships around is for up and coming characters. Some corporations furnish ships to their members and if those ships don't get blown up by the time the member has out grown them - they turn them back in for the use of other up and coming characters entering the corporation.
As with all corporate sharing systems - you're going to have problems with people not giving the ships back when they cease to use them so a lot of this becomes more a case of the corporation furnishing new people with ships - which they may have to build or buy if they don't have any laying about. It all depends on the corporation and there are any number of ways of doing that - so there's no set rules (except BY corporation).
Another reason for keeping old ships around is in case you need to fall back on them because all your newer ships are gone. If you get rid of all your old ships and lose the ones you're using to make money with - you'll have to replace them and if you don't have enough money - you can end up back in a rookie ship. That shouldn't happen - but you see people begging in local because it has happened.
The number one saying in EVE is "Don't fly what you can't afford to lose." Having back up ships is a way of being able to afford losing what you're flying.
So you want to have some kind of a reserve - either in cash or ships - in case you do lose the ships you're using to support yourself.
There isn't any one way to do things though. Everyone has a different play style. You just need to gradually figure out what works best for you.

As many as you'll need for the time it takes you to replace ships. If you live in high sec getting ships is very easy so you don't need to have many ready in stock (apart from different uses ofcourse). If you live in 0.0 that's not that easily restocked or you're at war you probably want more to cover the "restock cycle time".
So it all depends on how good you are at not blowing up :P

I have more than 300 ships. I keep them in Station Warehouses by type and scattered around at various offices, especially near jump clones. About 25% are fitted. About 10% rigged.
It's a problem, but, aside from the fact that some ships give you the slight edge you need for something, there are times when I just feel like flying something I haven't flown for a while.
I fly Executioners a lot because I picked up 400 in Tash Murkon for 8600 ISK each. (40 left and not for sale.) Magnates are the best salvagers in the game, for the way I salvage. Etc., so don't get rid of all your frigates.
Ships are kind of like a savings account, too. They can be repackaged and sold if you need a few ISK. When you buy a ship you're pretty much guaranteed that it will be in perfect condition.

I've got over a hundred ships in various states scattered around. Most are still sitting in Halle in case I decide I want another round of RVB.
Now as a practical matter how many ships you need depends on what you do. If you are a station trader in Jita you don't really need any. if you are a hauler you might want a small selection of various types from basic industrials up to freighters.
My mission runner keeps an single frig for running those missions that don't allow assault ships an assault ship for L1 and L2 missions a BC for L3s and currently a single battleship for L4s, though honestly I should have a backup in case something goes wrong. I'd recommend one that you pimp out a bit to maximize your isk earning potential and another basic fit in case something goes wrong so you can fall back on it. Oh also have a noctis for salvaging after mission. Of course if you are a Marauder pilot you might skip the salvage boat and just cherry pick while blitzing.
For a PVPer it all depends on what you are doing and how you fly. If you tend to cautious and selective in your engagements to the point where you seldom lose ships you need far fewer than if you are the type who will engage any and all comers regardless of odds. As to ship selection it all depends on what role you prefer and if you are specialized. It'll also depend on how your corp runs if you are in a corp that does exclusively drake trains then you don't need as many as one that might do a shield run one night and a armor the next.
Ideally what ever you do you want to have a ship or two fit for that role ready to go at any time. Few things are as annoying as waiting for some dip**** to put together a ship at the last moment when you are about to start an op.

Thank you for all the input. Looks like having a selection available is accepted far and wide as a good idea. =)

This is what I have at anyone time in my hangar:
2 Alpha BS - Maelstroms (I usually have one when my alliance is deployed, and a reserve at our home system, especially if living out of a POS while deployed)
4-5 Fleet Battlecruisers - Hurricanes (1 Long Range shield, 2 short range shield, 1 short range armour. I often have some solo/small gang Cyclones fit & ready to go)
2 Fleet HACs - Muninns (1 armor, 1 shield)
1 Nano HAC - Vagabond (for small nano HAC gangs)
2 Bombers - Hound (1 set up for fleet bomber ops, the other set up for solo or small gang roams)
1 Cov Ops - Cheetah (handy for day to day running around in 0.0)
2-3 T1 Cruisers - Shield fit (I always keep a couple Ruptures fit for small roams and non-reimbursable ops [yes im a cheap bastard])
4-5 Frigates - Dramiel, Firetail, Stiletto, Claw (Basically I keep a nice bunch of frigates for multipurpose use. Some times I need to scout, sometimes I just need to reship fast, sometimes there are pure frig roams).
1 Hauler - Gotta have a rigged hauler on standby all the time
1 Ratting BS - Cap stable Typhoon for running anomalies in 0.0
1 Logi - Scimitar (I don't technically have one of these in my hangar right now, as I'm just training to fly it. In a weeks time one of these will be a permanent addition to my pvp collection though.
So, all in all, I guess I have about 20 odd ships in my hangar rigged and fit.
I also keep several packaged hurricane hulls in my hangar because I tend to lose them more than other ships (I stock up when prices dip). Sarcasm - Because i'm too far away to strangle you. |

1) I have a typhoon (for everything but hauling) and a 2) bestower for hauling.
I've found that it's easier to keep a bunch of parts handy to re-fit the typhoon to do whatever job is needed rather than a hanger full of semi-random single purpose ships.

Edited by: Cyprus Black on 19/02/2011 02:33:44 I typically have 4 or 5 rifter frigates fully fitted for pvp and ready to fly. I dabble in piracy and lose them on an average of 2 per week. I'm certainly not the best at piracy but also not the worst either. Probably near the bottom but not the worst

do keep in mid however that most ships tend to do exceedingly well at one or two particular roles which is why many people make several single purpose ships.
also when it comes to rigs you cant exactly swap them out without trowing isk down the drain when you decide to refit so its better to have multiple ships if you have more then one rig configuration needed.

It's a style and safety issue. If you only fly one or a few types of ships, you're liable to have only those types around. If you fly a variety of ships, you are liable to have some of each.
Where you have jump clones, many will often keep ships near by to use. If you live in nullsec, you are liable to keep some ships at a distance so as to avoid "all eggs in 1 basket" where you may lose access to those assets.
Myself - I have perhaps 20 different ships and I'm planning on a few more options. I fly covert ops ships so I tend to keep 1 at each jump clone location - they get around easier. Haulers at other locations, etc... I recently got rid of some 15 or so "old ships" - vexors, dominix, catalysts, etc... that I hadn't flown in a very long time and that I don't plan on really using again.
each to their own on how they play and what they feel they need for both convenience and safety.

Edited by: Idicious Lightbane on 21/02/2011 03:07:25 In our home system in low-sec I usually keep and replace as soon as I loose:
1/2 Sniper Apoc 1 Full neut Apoc 2 RR Geddon's 1/2 Abaddon 2 Zealots (1 armor, 1 nano shield) 4-5 Harbingers, usually 2-3 fit up, atleast one shortrange armor and long range shield Couple of ceptors 1 Cov-ops for scanning 1 Ishtar for ratting/missioning
Can jump instantly into any type of gang really and reship back into a new one if the one I'm in pops, if you're just missioning in high-sec all you really need is your mission ship with enough ISK in reserve to replace it for the tiny chance it gets destroyed.

I generally keep 2-3 of every ship type i am regularly flying (not nessercerily the same ship; for example my shield lr-zealot and cerberus are fit for sniper-hac gangs, so I dont need a spare of both) meaning I have about 15 rigged and fitted at the moment. This is so I have a spare good to go the second my current one turns into parts, and since im living in 0.0, I can have a spare located somewhere else to my primary (since theres nothing worse than all your ships getting locked into a captured station).

For PvE, just a Mael and Noctis for salvage. Usually have a buffer Pest on hand for anything interesting that comes up. Also a covops for scanning around, and an AF for running interesting sites. Hauler for making ammo runs. Fair few shuttles.
In a seperate system where we launch PvP roams from...couple Pests and Canes (armor/shield) Inty, Covops, SB, a few "disposable" Ruptures, and shuttles.
Everything is usually ready to fly, though I often swap out midslot stuff depending on the need for tackle, etc.
