Edited by: Pinifarina on 17/02/2011 03:55:36 **********MARGIN TRADING RELATED, if you already know about it don't read.**************
Well before i tell you the exploit I will tell you how i came across it. I was like usually selling my loot in Jita market, and one of my items had a buy order for more than half a million than normal price.. but with a minimal order a little high. So, because I was needing something to do, and REALLY needing the ISKies, i went to several market hubs to buy, best market prices available, of the item. After around 2-3 hours around gathering the huge amount of items necessary, i finally went back to Jita to sell them and after "parking" my ship and verifying that the order was still there, i tryed to execute the sale. Surprisingly the order disappear when i click on the yes button. After a few hours i checked the market sales, i verified that no order was made at the high price of the buy order, so noone had made the sale before me, so the only solution was that the player buying remove the order in the exact moment i place the items for sale. Strange, but could happen, so i petition it to see what it was. Some days after i saw again one item with a high price, high volume buy order, but this time the price was so high that it was screaming scam!! So i did petition it again, but this time as a bug report and exploit. The answer to the petition was that there was no way to check the buy order, and then there was no way to check it's veracity. Amazingly i got another buy order scam in market, and so this time I screen shot it and attach it to the petition. Now they have the prove they wanted. And after thinking a little bit i figure that one way of doing it was using the attribute of the margin trade skill. I explain to the GM my theory, and after he confirm it he said it is a game feature!!!???
So here is the big juice, I monitored prices for the item and the price raise in all major hubs and it raised more than 2M from normal price, and also buy orders place by normal players raise more than 1M. Now price is under normal market price (because people like me that were try to gather the items necessary for the buy order just want to get rid of them), so here's the trick, you get an alt and train margin trade, then you check some items you got and want to sell for a better price, you place a buy order for minimal quantity high (remember that you still have to have the necessary money for the order in the moment of the order placing) and for a price a little bit higher (1 or 2M). After you place the order, you still have some money (due to margin trade skill) and immediately transfer it to another char. now you have a buy order that needs more money than you got :) so when someone trys to sell the order simply disappear (the downside is that because you didn't had the money at the time of the sale you get a 10% fine). Now you just place another buy order higher than the last and place your items at sale in the same station (verify that the profit can pay both fines of 10% and still give you some profit). After some days you can check that prices in the items drop a LOT, so now it's the time to buy, buy a big lot. Wait some more days to the prices get to normal again and do it over again.
good luck and good profits

Edited by: mkmin on 17/02/2011 03:44:57 Hey. OP. Your news is 4 months old. Wall of text adds nothing new to the pile of tears of those scammed.
Yes, it's a scam. Yes it sucks. Yes, it's more sophisticated than saying "duhr, buy my 1 trit for 3 billion isk." But yes, it's really freakin' easy to avoid. Maybe start reading the news when you log in and you won't be surprised when you get screwed.

it is called margin trading and you got played like a fool. You see a good deal that is way out of line with normal market history and went for it you should have suspected something was up. It reminds me of noobs taking courier contracts to lowsec/0.0

This isn't an exploit, it's a scam, one of hundreds.
It's creative use of the margin trading skill, nothing more.

at first the order seamed true because was not far from normal price, i realized it was a scam when i notice the order for a value a lot higher than normal (initial order was 5% higher than normal buy orders

Fail because it actually does make sense; just because it's CCP approved doesn't mean people aren't exploiting it; it's an exploit.

The margin skill allows you to buy without having the full amount required, so that that isk can be spread out and you can successfully buy more then a handful of items at a time. The down side is if a buy order is filled you wallet can be low (isk going out of the wallet) and you cannot process other buy orders until your sell orders shrink (isk comes into the wallet). Thats how the skill works, someone could of had 90% of their buy orders filled removing most of their isk and none of their sell orders moved (legit reason, their are days you can sell less then what you buy but your wallet cannot cover it and you are not around to manage your orders effectively). Its easy to exploit and set up the wallet so it fails on purpose between 2 alts, just because it looked to be true is no reason for you to angry that you got scamed and it seems you knew it was the margin trade skill. Think before you act, never buy to immediately fill 5 jumps over (especially in jita, FFS its worse then Tattooine) when there is an "OMG! I CAN MAKE 50% PROFIT!" which should of set bells off just as much as local spam contracts and moving to nullsec T1 hull trades. On the upside scams are a great learning tool, you can do it too (or learn the triggers to avoid it) and Margin trade is like 13 days for rank 5. The possibilities...
