When people tanking armor i understand it mean all armour repairers, plates etc... but with regard skills training... would i completely ignore shield skills and concentrate on armor? or learn shields as well on the way?
I'm a little confused.
Thanks in advance

Concentrate on armor first and just ignore shields. * Repair Systems (5% reduction in repair systems duration per skill level) Also vital skills : * Electronics Skill (5% extra CPU/level) * Engineering (5% extra powergrid/level) * Energy Management (increases cap capacity by 5% per level) * Energy Systems Operation (decreases cap recharge time by 5% per level) * Mechanic (5% bonus to structure hit points per skill level) * Hull Upgrades (5% bonus to armor hit points per skill level) * Afterburner (10% bonus to Afterburner duration per skill level) * Navigation (5% bonus to sub-warp ship velocity per skill level) * Acceleration Control (5% Bonus to Afterburner and MicroWarpdrive speed boost per skill level) * Evasive Maneuvering (5% improved ship agility for all ships per skill level) * Fuel Conservation (10% reduction in afterburner capacitor needs per skill level) * Spaceship Command (2% improved ship agility for all ships per skill level) Then train the shield skills anyway * Shield Management (5% bonus to shield capacity per skill level) * Shield Operation (5% reduction in shield recharge time per skill level) up to L3 or L4 as it will take little time and help a lot even if you don't have any shield stuff fitted.
Eventually you'll want to be able to do both (but not at the same time)
For shield tankers other way round :)

Don't mix tanks. By that I mean don't use both armor and shield modules. Both would take from a pool of limited resources and neither will be effective enough to deal with incoming damage. Skills are different though. Training shield skills won't hurt your armor tank, but they won't really help it out much either.

There are 2 kinds of armor tanking, buffer and active. Buffer tanking is increasing your EHP to as high as it will go in order to delay a possible death. Active tanking is repairing as much EHP as possible (regardless of what the total available is) to prevent death entirely.
There aren't actually a lot of skills that affect the ability to armor tank more those required by the modules. Take a look at your character sheet -> certificates -> certificate planner and find the defense\armor tanking cert. Also look at the core capacitor cert to be able to keep your tank running.
It's also worthwhile to be aware of the recommended certs of the particular ship you're flying. Training those are a good starting place.

Having extra shield and shield regen is always handy to have, so I wouldn't train it right away but once you have some "free skill time" for non-vital stuff you could devote some time to it.
Having said that, and you being correct on Gallente being armor tankers, some of their ships shield tank quite well. Mostly in pvp situations but also for PVE, still it's a bit of non-standard way of doing things so just stick to armor tanking for now. There's more than enough important skills to train before you should "waste" time on shields :P

Getting your basic shield skills to 3 or so takes maybe a day or two total. I'd do that fairly early just so that you _can_ shield tank if absolutely necessary (and so that you can test it out-- if you prefer it to armor tanking, it might shift your preferred ships or even races).
Beyond that? No, ignore it. Stick with one method of tanking until you've got most of it at level 5 and the rest at level 4. And remember that capacitor skills are a vital part of active tanking (which is how gallente armor tanking always works in PvE and usually works in general). ---

You don't need any shield skills except maybe Shield Management to 3 or so for a bit of a buffer.

My Gallente ships work fine with shields. My armor skills are ok but I've never used it. I fill the lows with Weapons Upgrades and Power Diagnostics. Works especially well for Celestises and Myrmidons.

Originally gallente is meant to be active armour tanking but game has driven past slow and fat armour buffer so shields are now favoured in PvP. Some gallente ships can still boast a fearsome active armour tank but active tanking in general fares poorly against opponents with neuts or superior numbers. In PvE armor tank is a viable option even if shield tanks are faster to train and in general have higher resist rates, armour tank wins in cap stability though since capless shield tank often requires you to lose most if not all of your damage modules from low slots. In the beginning however you should focus on tanking aspect of your preferred race as training both tanks at same time rarely gives you benefits until you have cross trained or have high enough fitting skills & in game experience to move away from a more conservative fittings (ie. to shield tanked, AC using myrms or domis with a pure shield tank).

Thanks, Baneken. You've got a better grasp on it than I do.
I should have mentioned that another factor in my choice of shields is that most of my characters start off flying Caldari no matter what race they are.
