What is the best ship (other than a Tengu, ie, below 250 million) for a 4/10 exploration complex like "Guristas Scout Output"? The online guide says a bunch of frigates aggro you right away, so would it be better to get a drone ship? Some of the options I guess:
Ishtar Navy Vexor Brutix
Thanks for any advice.

I use a navy vexor with the standard, armor tank/rails/drones pve setup. has no problems in all 4/10s. I actually do all my high sec exploring in it.

I did them easily in my Drake.

The same ship you would use for most Level 4's I don't believe in signatures, not even really cool ones like "This signature intentionaly left blank" |

An AML Cerberus or a Navy Caracal even better since it can field 3 light drones.

I'm not sure 4/10s allow battleships in, but even so they are just cruisers and frigates so the optimal ship is one that can tank well and hit those classes of ships easily.

4/10s don't allow battleships, the max is battlecruisers.

It should be noted that the max is Battlecruiser *hulls*. So you can take the T2 variants in there too.

Until those frigates warp and web you, and those cruises start hurting...bye bye Hurricane...! I don't believe in signatures, not even really cool ones like "This signature intentionaly left blank" |

The web and scram Frigates pop easily enough.

I found my Drake to be riciculously overpowered for 4/10 complexes.
(Some of you probably think I should have ended that sentence at "overpowered".)

There's no such thing as 'overpowered' for exploration; if you're doing it for isk rather than the novelty value (which expires pdq), you want to be in and out in 5 minutes. Forget all the regular frigs and cruisers, you want the faction/overseer dead, looted, and hopefully leave with an escalation. That means tanking all the incoming dps, killing only what you have to.
So use a ship with good natural resists for the region's rats, tank it to kingdom come and have about 250-300dps.
Blitzing plexes is the only way to be isk-effective. If you want to kill all & sundry, go back to missions; you'll make better money there.
EDIT: Command/Fleet ships are excellent for 4/10's. Drake can also do them well. Most explorers use Tengu/Legion because of their base resist spread which means they can be used in any region without faffing about too much with tank mods, and ofc have a scanning buff subsystem.

Mostly good info but all the sites I've been in require you to kill all NPC ships in the room of a plex before allowing gate access to next room.
Also the OP asked for something other than a T3 Cruiser.
I use a T2 Force Recon Cruiser for High Security Exploration and have no problems with it at all. I believe the T3 Cruisers are excellent for low/0.0 exploration.

As far as I understand we are talking about GSO (Guristas Sout Outpost here) and probably hi sec for a moment.
If we exclude Tengu, for the price tag reason, I will bet my money on Drake. I have tried almost everything in 1000+ GSO I have found and run in hi sec, including: Drake, Night Hawk, Pilgrim, Arbitrator, Caracal (Navy Issue as well), Vexor, Ishtar, Legion, Proteus, Gila, Cerberus... And I still beleive Drake is unbeatable choice with right fit (if u can't afford T3).
Drake has right mixture of tank, dps and speed (and price) to be very effective to scan and complete GSO. Ofc, it can't compete with Tengu, but sooner or later you get enough ISK to get the one.
And all your skill points investments in drake will pay off with Tengu in long run, especially if you are goint to go to low sec to complete excalations of Watch and Vigil.
The first pocket in GSO has bunch of frigs. So focus your fit not so much on dps, but on effectiveness of you missiles, like target navigation prediction and explosion velocity. You must to run GSO as fast as possible, and jumming frigs is number one priority in the first pocket.
The second pocket requires only destruction of "Telescope" to get the loot and you need just "enough" tank to handle incoming DPS.
On the final note, I have got so much ISKs from GSO, that Tengu paid for itself in 3 days of exploration in hi sec. But it was about yer ago. Lot of thing have happened since. So many people scanning with T3, it isn't even funny any more.
For low sec I use dual boxing dramiel/manticore for a long time. And nothing can beat it on ISK/risk ratio. But it is another story.

personally i would always stick to cruiser hull as max size. simply because about 60% of the time someone else will jump in and try to take the loot. if you are in a bc youre too slow

Do you really think you can outperform my Tengu fitted with MWD and overloaded? good luck
If you have experienced plexer on grid, you have slim chances no matter which ship you fly anyway.
So, you prime objective is to complete plex as fast as possible.

Definitely this. I can't remember how many drakes/harbingers I've snagged loot out from under. Even cruisers as well; make sure to fit a mwd or ab.

HAC or T3, in any site you want speed in case the competition shows up. ------------------------ Low-sec is like sailing along the coast of Somalia...

- Ishtar with T2 heavies/sentries, if you got the skills. My personal choice.
- Sacrilege, tanks like crazy.
- Drake, quite affordable and you get an extra high slot for the probe launcher.
- Faction cruiser of your choice. I've personally used the omen navy issue, very nice ship, not sure about the others.
- Some highsec plexes only allow frigates. I personally just ignore those, but if you're going to run them, an assault frigate. I like a lot the Ishkur for that role, sometimes the Vengeance
My 2 cents

Omen Navy Issue???? I always was under the impression its a crap ship? Did you use it for high sec or low sec? What were the fittings?
