All over the forums I always see people saying drones are a very bad idea against sleepers as they will quickly kill off your drones. After testing it I found it is very easy to use drones against sleepers without them taking any damage, so easy infact that they require even less work then on normal AI rats.
The simple solution is just add 1 ECM to your mids. My testing in a C1 WH with a solo Myrmidon over aprox. 20 sites of rats, is that the sleepers will not damage your drones at all.
There was only once my drones took any damage from sleepers and that was becuase a new wave spawned, and i was outside the sleepers target range and my drones happened to be closer then i was. When new waves spawn and you are in target range, sleepers lock you and stay on you without needing to manage your drones as you would have to with normal rats.
Again I would like to state all my testing was done in a C1(no effects) with only Hob II's and Hammer II's. I should also note that it seems you do dont even need to activate your ECM module(could use a little more testing on that), there were many times i was to lazy to activate the ECM and drones were still fine. I have not yet tested with heavies or sentry drones, the extra damage may draw agro.
So all you drone lovers out there, take to the WH's and enjoy some revenge. If you do try out your drone boats in this way, post your results here.

In C3's they do go after my drones, all the time.

Did you do what the OP suggested?

In sleeper aggro mechanics, ECM > Drones.
Ergo the OP's post is exactly right - try to ECM the sleepers and they'll aggro you, leaving the drones alone.
I've had this work in C3/C4's so I doubt it's class dependent.

I have, in the somewhat distant past, used ecm in c3's and still had the sleepers target my drones. I did have good drone skills and bad ecm skills though.
As webbing becomes ubiquitous it becomes very difficult to save your drones once they become targeted. Especially noticeable in some of the radar sites...

It's simply a matter of who appears higher in their threat table that determines who gets aggro. ECM, remote energy/shield/armour transfer, and raw DPS will all bump you up the table. New arrivals to the site (i.e. someone warping in after you've started) also seem to get their fair share of aggro regardless of ship type.
It's an interesting theory the OP posits; I will have to try it sometime (anything to get out of running C2's in a Drake...)

from what i understand, sleepers ignor certain sizes of drones.
for instance, frigate are supposed to shoot any drones, cruisers ignore light drones, and battleships ignore meds and lights.
personal story, my basi's light shield bots were untouched in a site that didnt spawn any frigs, but my rattlesnake buddy's ogres and heavy shield bots took a beating.

Not mine and I do C3s. I have no ewar mods on either. I use Hobs and Hammerheads. So I too, get confused when I read on the forums that sleepers target drones. They'll target my drones once in a blue moon. ----------------- My own Facebook page Cuz I'm Kool.

I think that drones build up their own aggro, so if you're flying a ship with a drone damage bonus like I used to (e.g. vexor, myrmidon, dominix) then your drones are more likely to draw aggro than if you're flying a primarily gun based ship with some added drones for flavor.
I've definitely had sleeper cruisers shoot my hobgoblin IIs before, pretty sure that I've had sleeper battleships alpha hobgoblins IIs as well but it was a long time ago so my memory could be faulty.

I was using a webber and they never targeted my drones out of 20 sites. I'd like to see more empirical testing from someone trusted such as Tau, but it's not likely to get past the heresay stage and if it did, CCP would change it like they did with moving WH's.

Why oh why did you have to let the cat out of the bag? Well, not that it matters so much.
Confirming - sleepers really don't like ECM. They will leave your drones alone so long as you are using it (and are careful with spawn management as always, new sleepers which arrive on the field have their own ideas)

I do am finding that sleepers in a c3 dont really target my drones very often. I figured that using a dominix would be a bad idea in a c3, but during my process of trying to determine the best ship for me. I have come to find that my heavily tanked dominix is the best choice. Out of 3 sites my drones have only been targeted once, and when they were I brought them in, and released them again. So I think im going to stick with my dominix. I have no ewar.
