Just keeping this short and asking for opinions.
I'm a minnie pilot currently working on l3s in my cane, about to hop into a mael for l4s. I'd like the most op l4 ship possible so I can easily run them for funds to support pvp habit. I hear tengu is a monster and am willing to train up caldari cruisers for it. But if I'm pvping in minnie ships it makes most of the skills useless (missile skills for minnie pvp?)
So my question is how comparable is a Tengu to a Vargur? If i were to stick to minnie ships could my one day vargur compete with a tengu in l4 mission completion speed/ease or is it still not even close?
Thanks!

From what I gather you will have faster mission completion times in a Tengu, but you will have higher isk/h income on the vargur if you salvage/loot as you go. All in all about equal, cross-training ought to tip the scale twords vargur

The specialty of tengu is no-risk low sec mission running. Being unprobeable, and less then 3 sec allign makes it very difficult to catch in low sec, able to mish run in hostile space.
in order to use the tengu properly, you NEED to be able to reject missions with faction standings, if you can, it is the ABSULOTE BEST mission runner, having the fastest weighted-average-acceptable-mission-completion-time among all ships.
im an avid user of tengu, mach, golem, nightmare, and CNR, but tengu is the absulote best.

Tengu. Facerolling to fortune at it's finest.
No messing around with different hardeners, ammo types, any of that bull. Full DPS out to 100kms, what's not to love. (remember to pack a web, which are actually more effective VS frigates than a TP/Rigors) (The kinetic bonus from the subsystem is often VERY close to actually using the proper ammo for the mission)
There's no thinking involved, and if you're like me, that's exactly the way I like it.
Who will you be running for/against? If you're running against kinetic weak like Serp/Guristas it's even more OP.

Lol, please stop telling people to get a tengu.
Tell them to get the loki, or just train for a HAS.

Vargur, 800mm Autocannon II's.
It's arguable which will chew through missions faster, but the Marauder's additional ability to fit salvage tackle and tractor beams with a 100% range bonus, and a cargo hold over 1100 m3 make the Vargur the ultimate pawn and salvage as you go ship. Tengu is just *pop* and go.

Enlighten us all good sir, what is so great about a Loki as a mission running ship?
PS: Yes, Tengu is very good.

Imho you should do this:
Hurricane => Maelstrom => Gank fit Maelstrom aka Baby Vargur fitting => Vargur | Machariel.
Not only you'll not fall asleep, you'll make 40-50M per hour since the Maelstrom Gank fit AND unlike for a missile boat, you'll learn to play, the importance of knowing how to place vs the opponents and so on. This WILL help at PvP. - Auditing & consulting

Good point tbqh. If you are interested in PvP, fly a projectile boat. Helps a little to understand the concepts of "wtf why i am missing" and "lololo cant hit me if i'm moving"

I've been in the Mael for a while and I love it for missions. I want to hear more about this Baby Vargur if you've got the time...

Varg all the way, can change dmg types, tanks awesome, salvage on the way. Makes ya twice as much as a Tengu easily. Caldari are lame imo, so boring.

Tengu is the only ship for now that could earn me 240-330m isk/hour at the usual 2K isk/LP conversion, even in hostile space.
It is up to you really. You can go marauders, and catch that feel-good factor with the loots, or you go on hard with T3, which are much more advanced and sustainable in hostile space.
