Hey
I'm caldari and in my research I've seen that caldari intys are supposed to be really bad in comparison to all the other intys, though I wouldn't know personally since I've never flown one. So question is should I go for the caldari(which I'm really close to getting since I've already trained for the AFs) or crosstrain for maybe a taranis?
Thanks in advance.

One of the Quarterly Economic Newsletters had some market data on T2 ships a year or so ago. It showed the Taranis as the most popular T2 frigate in the game. And I've heard it again from many other pilots. The Crow is also seen quite a bit -- maybe because of the lack of ranging and falloff issues with missiles, or just because a lot of players start out learning Caldari ships.
I always loved flying the Taranis, but I'm a died-in-the-wool Gallente fan.
I'm not a big PvP pilot, though, so I'm sure there are some more qualified opinions out there.

Whereas folks can argue which races is better or what not, they all can get the job done depending on the skill and the comfort of the pilot flying the ship.
It's not a joke to say the pilot is usually more the issue with a ship than the ship itself. How comfortable one is with flying a ship - their style and their knowledge of its limits versus some theoretical base statistical capabilities.
So if you're close to getting the Caldari interceptor - get it. Try it out and see for yourself. If it's not quite what you are looking for, you can cross train to the Gallente ones in around a week. They are more highly thought of by many but there really isn't anything wrong with any of the interceptors.

Be aware of the two interceptor types. There are what I like to call "fleet" and "solo". I personally much prefer the fleet ceptors with their bonus to point range. You can sustain an orbit outside neut range to hold just about any target indefinitely, plus they tend to end up being faster than the solo ceptors. When you look at it from that point of view, race doesn't matter a whole lot, since all the fleet ceptors have the same bonus to point range, but should otherwise not usually take any incoming damage or need to deal any. People don't tend to like flying the fleet ceptors because they don't get the killmail, and that trophy is more important to most people than actual effectiveness.

This.
I must say I like the crow alot. Every ship has weakness & advantage. I personly like the range of the missiles. Just pick your fight carfully & you should be good.

Crow is a really good interceptor. Fit a tank on it (Damage Control, Small Shield Extender), warp disrupt, light missiles and nano.
Makes you very hard to take out once you get used to thinking fast enough for its brutal speed (over 5000m/s, only dramiels and some crusaders will be able to go faster than you consistently).
Its dps is rather pathetic, so think whether you like that style.
Raptor is the laughing stock of ceptors, all other fleet interceptors can outperform it in the fleet role. Still, your main purpose it to hold something in place, not to damage it, so just fit a tank, mwd and a point. Rest is really optional. The "outperform" part is only noticeable in 1vs1. _______________________ Drink Eau du Nichup«, the taste of heaven. Now available as Nichup Citrus« as well! |

It depends on what you want to do with it.
My trader has to make a lot of bookmarks to do a Quick Warp to out of stations so I was just looking for the fastest and got a Claw.
Put some Over Drive Injectors on it and a good MWD - and it gets out there a good bit faster than the Slasher I was using.
I really can't speak to it's other uses. I don't think I even put any weapons on it. I know that some modules (like armor) add weight which will slow you down though I'm not sure if the weight of the weapons would be a factor. I guess I could try it out and see ...
*shrug*
In any case - what you want to do - is to look at the different ships and what they can do and evaluate them based you your criteria. You may need more general requirements - but you may also have very specific ones. All depends on just what you want to do with it.

I own a Crow.
It is a good tackler, as are all the interceptors, but if your goal is to one-on-one dogfight with another frigate, the Crow's performance is lackluster.

I looked at that and I got:
Vigil w/ Minmatar Frigate V trained = 441.25 m/s
Claw = 475 m/s

Vigil Mass = 1,080,000 kg Claw Mass = 1,126,000 kg
Well I tried it out but couldn't quite duplicate the rigs:
Claw:
ODI II x4
Catalyzed Cold Gas 1 Arc Jet Thrusters
Speed: 821 m/s MWD: 5367
Rigs: Small Engine Thermal Shielding I x2
Vigil:
ODI II x3
Catalyzed Cold Gas 1 Arc Jet Thrusters
Speed: 736 m/s MWD: 4934
Rigs: none
Obviously the Vigil is vastly cheaper. I got this one for 120,000 ISK.

MWD All lowslots are overdrives. All rigs are auxilary thrusters.
Pretty straightforward. _______________________ Drink Eau du Nichup«, the taste of heaven. Now available as Nichup Citrus« as well! |

That's interesting. I'd stayed away from the thruster rigs as I figured with 4 ODI's in the lows the stacking penalty would pretty much negate anything more. Obviously not.
Is this in game - or EFT?
Mine is in game.

Agility is also important and the Vigil's tiny mass means more gains from agility effecting mods and rigs.
The take home for new pilots is that the Vigil is a very cost effective ship to learn how to pilot the more expensive intys.
imo the Vigil is the most underrated T1 frig.
