Edited by: DrysonBennington on 01/03/2011 21:39:01 The new form of harrasment is called IP Harvesting. Basically what happens is a person provides you with a link to an IP Harvesting site. Once the harvesting site has found your IP address in their server or on their home server log's they use IP tracking programs that can pinpoint your exact location without you knowing it. The harvester's then employ people within your community to harass you until you give up what you do on your off time to follow some corporate mandate or political agenda.
Last night this happened while playing EvE Online. A character named Solar X linked me a George Carlin video relating to saying "Screw the environment." He said that it would only take five minutes of my time. During those five minutes while I watched the George Carlin Tube a female came over the the t.v. (Sci-FI) and mentioned my EvE Online screen name.
I am quite certain that people like Solar X are involved with groups that are not concerned about the environment and are the trash type who collect information about theirself so that they can harass and stalk people until they change their political viewpoint. Why else would Solar X point me to a non-environmentally conscious video unless he had actively been engaged in gathering information about what I post online? He is also most likely part of the Koch Knight conspiracy to break up unions so that lower standards of safety are present.

Its when you point a link, and the web page has command lines within it to scan your IP and send it to companies in your area that the may regard the web page. (Religion/politics) and those companies that buy your IP address info will know where you live and will have someone come to your door asking if you would like to hear about bla bla bla, and wont stop until you get the police involved. And 90% of the time they will always send a new person anys so you cant just get a restringing order against just one person and have it stopped.

I want the same drugs you are using.
Of course a web page knows your IP address, it's the only way to connect and send the web page data to your computer. And if you have cookies enabled, the web server will "know" that you've been here before. This is normal internet service behaviour. Did you know that also eve account management collects your IP address and uses it to see if you've been hacked? OMG I KNOW it's so weird that you ahve to provide a method to identify yourself besides your account info.
If you get marketing people behind your door it'll be from past promotions or that stupid neighbour signing up your name to some promo-flyer or you entering a competition for a company X who sells the info to company Y. Rarely your position can be even determined from your IP address, even less if you have a normal ISP which swaps your IP address on every connect. I live within network where my address is publicly visible and during these 4 years no one has knocked on my door and sold anything.
I know, I stepped on a troll, but still, paranoia is bad, mmm'kay? |

There is some truth to what this person is saying. A few years ago I used a program called Neotrace. With that program I was able to trace not only the persons IP address but also the exact location of that computer and the physical address of that building.Once I had that information I am then able to obtain a satellite image of that location. Do the research. that technology does exist. I used used it. Just because you think something sounds that far fetch doesn't mean its a case of paranoia. I don't think he would have wasted his time if he didn't experience what he stated. I do however have a question. Did the O/P file a petition with CCP to make them aware of the possibility of IP Harvesting. Like I said, do the research. Don't blow it off because your mind says its hogwash. You don't think that can happen then you are fools. Like I said. I used to track IP's. Be the kind of man that when your feet hit the floor each morning, the devil says "Oh crap, he's up!"

Edited by: Romeo Johnson on 03/03/2011 18:26:42 This thread, right here, is why the internet needs some kind of drivers license.
When you trace back an IP address. You are getting some geo-location information based on best know position of the BGP hosts between you and the IP address you are looking for. In addition, ARIN, etc. databases on IP block assignments are used to infer physical location on end point IP addresses, but thats all it is, inference.

That's called abuse / harassement coupled with infringement on one's private sphere which is an official delict and also breaks basic human rights (rough translation from the term in my country). Such an action would, after being reported by the abused one, ensue an investigation by the state you live in. This in itself - or merely the threat of it - would make those people stop.
And that's again IF anything like that even happens. In any more or less civilized country this is unthinkable or would only happen to deadly naive people.

http://dev.w3.org/geo/api/spec-source.html
Practical example: http://html5demos.com/geo
The accuracy of geolocation varies wildly depending upon the device that is utilizing it. For example, a desktop computer with only a wired network connection only gives out the IP address. IP addresses are only bound to a general geographic location by convention: NOT by any sort of standard which ISPs are bound to.
Generally, your geolocation is determined by doing a tracert on your IP address, and parsing the name of the router to extract clues on your geographic location.
For example, the second to last router on a tracert to my IP address yields: "dtr01mnplmi-gbe-1-46.bycy.mi.charter.com" There are 3 clues that I see in my example: mi = Michigan bycy = bay city mnplmi = Mount Pleasant, MI
Now, even IF these router names can be trusted, they only hint at the location of my ISP's router. They still don't know where exactly I live. They only know that my ISP is in Mount Pleasant, MI. So when I use a geolocation service they can only pin me down to a city. And even then, they only know that my ISP is in that city. I could be ANYWHERE in my ISP's service area. And if my ISP doesn't label the geographic location in the router's name, then the accuracy is even LESS accurate, as the service must use a router closer to the backbone (and thus theoretically further from me).
The scary part comes when you connect to the Internet wirelessly. Using a properly configured smartphone, these geolocation services can access your GPS and find your location within a couple meters. Even without GPS, an internet connection via a cell phone can let the geolocation service find out which cell phone towers are close to you. With some more advanced techniques, it could try to figure out your location through trilateration - so long as you are within range of 3 cell phone towers. Even if you are only in range of 1 cell phone tower, it can pin it down to within a couple of miles.
So all of you people with those fancy smartphones who pay 30 USD a month for a measly 3-6 GiB of bandwidth should be stocking up on tinfoil hats. Those of us who stick with landlines are still relatively safe from "Big Brother".
EDIT: I would also like to mention that the ONLY way to connect your IP address with an exact address is if someone is able to subpoena your ISP. And ISPs REALLY don't like handing this information out. Even if you can subpoena the ISP, they may simply respond that the IP address is dynamically assigned so they don't know. It is up to the issuer of the subpoena to be intelligent enough to ask the ISP who was assigned that dynamic IP address on X particular date. ----------
