Unless you plan to research a carrier BPO to perfect, then M.E. 2 is fine. There is no improvement from 3 to less than perfect.
The difference between M.E. 2 and perfect is about 4m ISK.
Perfect for all carriers other than Chimera is 8. Chimera is 7.

If you have to ask such a question you should not try your luck with carriers

Unless you plan to research a carrier BPO to perfect (no waste), then M.E. 2 is fine. There is no improvement at M.E. 3 to less than perfect.
The difference between M.E. 2 and perfect is about 4m ISK.
Chimera is perfect at M.E. 7 (fewer capital drone bays). Perfect for all other carriers is M.E. 8. It takes nearly a year of research to reach perfect. Not worth it.
It takes roughly 660m ISK worth of minerals to build a carrier.
What about the components such as armor plates?

Well, GL with that :) me and one friend started this bussiness, it costed us 24B just to begin so it is profitable.
You cant make from copies, cus you will pay everything you earn to buy them. Oh, and we were lucky and some friends borrowed us ME2 BPO while we research our own :)

I'd recommend at least M.E. 20. I'd personally aim for 100 or 200. They don't take as long to research as the carrier BPO.
This may help: BPO Calc

Thanks for that link, very handy! Is there a way to modify the mineral prices it uses?

Ude Dedaf's Industrial Tool excel sheet to figure out the rough estimate. (search a few pages back, I cba to link sorry) It'll take some figuring out to use it, but it's a good tool for manufacturers once you got over the quirks. |

You should totally mine in 0.0, preferably in a pipe system, even better if you then need to haul the ore a few systems to a station to refine before hauling the materials back to a pos to build the things.
Under no circumstances should you consider buying various mods off the mission runners for less than their material worth, then reprocess them at a low sec station where you then build the ships.
That'd be madness.

Confirming that efficiency is madness.
