currently we have around 7,000,000,000 ppl on planet earth. population growth is around 1.3-1.5% per year.
one could say : not much.
however, IF that 1.5% growth per year would exist for next centuries then after 750-800 years we would have :

All humans should be sterilized at birth in a reversible way. Then, when they're older (say 25) and mature enough to make a well educated and planned decision to have kids, then they can.
This would prevent teen pregnancy, accidental pregnancy, and most crack baby pregnancies.
It's annoying to no end to see those commercials on TV that solicit for donations for places like Ethiopia where kids and families are starving en mass. They're starving, cant feed themselves and yet they're still reproducing like rabbits. I'd rather pay for consensual sterilizations and then food to just those responsible families instead of just throwing more food at them.
The more food you give them the more they reproduce the more food they need....
We should think of the planet first and if families were limited to 2-3 children per couple it would help slow the grow of the population and help keep the planet livable.

ofc, i know. 800 years for our civilization, seeing how fast we decay is simply a exaggeration... nevertheless, the numbers here are mighty interesting :]
well, govs around the world are doing what they can to reduce the human population (read us, simple ppl. for example D. Rockefeller has SIX children... decent input i would say :] ) - poisons in air and water, also food. food itself isnt nutritious, wars, lab engineered diseases, monetary system (important! in controling human population). so dont blame your government for lack of actions :] govs are killing us as fast as they can without being too obvious to the public.
if we are looking for ppl to blame, all we have to do is to look into the mirror.
cheers

My 80 year old father in law will spend the weekend at our place. He never takes a bath, smells a lot and leaves brown spots on the toilet seat when he leaves the bathroom. So the world can end anytime now! It would probably make my day!

The truth is out there: The US government wants to buy all the isk in Eve and feed it to starving French men. The EurAsian government (who are secret) will then send all the overfed frenchmen to arabia to steal all the oil in the world and sell it to the Africans for extortionate amounts of money.
This is all true. All except teh bit above.

I remember reading a study that stated the entire earth's population (as of year 2000-ish, 6billion) could fit into the state of texas (1/4million square miles) and give the average family of 5 thousands of square feet to live on.
now of course that is silly, doesn't take into account land needed to grow food, land allotted for transportation, etc.... but it is something to think about.
if there isn't a huge die-off (which history tells us is likely) AND we are able to keep some semblance of civilization (allowing for further technological advancements, not backwards/dark ages) there is no reason to think we won't be able to survive.
square footage is only one part of the equation (you can do a lot with 100,000 sq feet of land if it's a 100 story simcity style arcology). add in oceanic algae farms and technology we haven't even thought of, and the picture becomes less bleak.
/tbh i think that's a fantasy and we are headed for a big fall in the next 10/100/1000 years. but anything is possible.

If you consider global averages, yeah, maybe about that number. But that's being blatantly dishonest, because the regional numbers tell a completely different story.
Quote: however, IF that 1.5% growth per year would exist for next centuries
Impossible. Highly developed regions are already experiencing a population LOSS, not a population growth, and the only way to keep total population roughly steady is through immigration. Less developed areas are reducing their growth rate too. Overall, it is not completely unlikely that the growth rate would reach zero or even start going negative on a global scale eventually. _

The UN has estimated that the world's population will peak in 2050 and begin a gradual decline from there. If you are worried about over population then you should encourage globalization as the richer the society, the less children that people have.
TL:DR
Don't worry about it.

True enough. However, there are simply not enough food for this kind of population, and so if the people will not regulate itself the lack of food will. Its sad. its tough. But thats reality.
The next wars will be over food.
And thats why I think its stupid for many western countries stopping producing food themselves; we simply gets too dependent on other making our foods. And when that source runs dry we are out of food ourselves, and its not done overnight starting up a farm...

you are assuming that that human growth is an exponential growth, when in reality it is more likely a logistic growth. In short, it should stop or even decline once it approaches the natural capacity. |

yeah, but it's only one side of the problem. current, monetary system, can work only if population growth will be +. you need more and more kids/ppl to cover for the elderly, to take credits, to inflate this fake economy. negative growth means serious troubles to current system, so i wouldnt be so sure if we will be ok in longer term.

a conspiracy tards? what are you? twelve?
i dont know if you have realised but what we are talking about here is ARITHMETICS. ever heard that word, kiddo?
it's not a conspiracy. this are true numbers. in last 100 years we got from 1B ppl to 7B. it's 7 times increase in earth population in only 100 years.
maybe you should at least google the words you are using to check their meaning before posting?

i was thinking about that myself (land if it's a 100 story simcity style arcology, etc). sure, but there is a few problems you have to solve : simple things like : fresh water, sewerage, i dont know... food?
those things are only possible in movies like 'the fifth element' etc.

Human natures penchant for war will take care of overpopulation when things get too tight resource wise just like it always has. The problem with the next round of world war is most everyone has nuclear tech of some sort or another so its going to be a bit more involved than shipping off your excess population to the killing grounds. We could very well glass the planet or at least portions of it this time around.

Nah.
Capitalism doesn't need growth to work. Entitelments need growth to work. Not the same thing. Capitalism only needs churn. Japan and Russia both have decreasing populations now and have had for a few years. They are doing ok relatively speaking.
